NES Selects Corvus Energy for Five New Fjord1 Ferries

Corvus Bags Five Battery Powered Ferries Contract

Fjord1's First Battery-powered Ferry Named at Havyard

Norwegian shipbuilder Havyard has christened the first battery-powered ferry ordered by transportation company Fjord1. The christening ceremony for MF Husavik was held at the yard in Leirvik in Sogn on May 14. Rolls-Royce's Autocrossing System for 13 New Ferries

Rolls-Royce Marine has signed a deal to supply its Autocrossing system to a total of 13 new environmentally friendly ferries for the Norwegian company Fjord1. The vessels are currently being built by three yards in Turkey and two yards in Norway. All contracts also include two azipull propellers for each vessel with accompanying propeller control system from Rolls-Royce. With this contract, Rolls-Royce has sold autocrossing to a  total of 18 new ferries to operate along the coast of Norway, of which 16 have been ordered by Fjord1 and two by another Norwegian ferry company, FosenNamsos Sjø.

Fjord1 Orders Seven Battery-Powered Ferries with Havyard

Havyard Group will be delivering the design for seven battery-powered ferries to Norwegian transportation company Fjord1, five of which will be built at the company’s own shipyard. Havyard and Fjord1 will thereby continue their partnership to achieve a green revolution on the Norwegian fjords. With this contract, Havyard Group has orders for 13 battery ferries at its own yard and has sold 12 battery ferry designs. Future of the Fjords: New Zero Emission Passenger Vessel

The Fjords DA has confirmed that is building a sister ship to the diesel-electric plug-in hybrid Vision of the Fjords, launched in 2016. However, unlike its predecessor, this 42m long carbon fibre vessel will be all electric and completely emission free. The Future of the Fjords is slated for launch in April 2018. Currently under construction at specialist shipbuilder Brødrene Aa, the new vessel retains Vision of the Fjords’ eye-catching ‘mountain path’ design and environmentally friendly build, with a hull that minimizes wake and reduces shoreline impact erosion.

Fjellstrand's Rolls Out Environmental Ferry

Norwegian ship yard Fjellstrand AS has signed a contract with Norwegian ferry operator Fjord1 for the building of a new ZeroCatTM 120 car ferry. Fjellstrand was also responsible for building the car ferry MF Ampere which wrote history in 2015 as the world’s first full electrical ferry. The yard had a central position in the introduction of new battery technology in the ferry market. The new ferry is a further development of the MF Ampere and will be equipped for higher speed and longer range.

Rolls-Royce Inks Landmark Automatic Ferry Crossing System Deal

The vessels are due for delivery in 2017 and will begin operation of 1st January 2018.

Rolls-Royce has signed a deal to supply its first automatic crossing system to Norwegian ferry company Fjord1. The system, the first of its kind, will control two new double-ended battery ferries as they cross between Anda and Lote on the 1330 km long E39 which connects communities along the west coast of Norway. Battery powered ferries have strict yearly limits on energy consumption as part of the commercial agreement between the ferry operator and the government. Automatic systems ensure consistent behaviour during the journey and hence predictable energy consumption.

Siemens Bags Electric Ferry Propulsion Contract

Siemens said it has secured a contract to supply propulsion systems for two new The all-electric battery ferries to be operated by Fjord1 on the E39 Anda-Lote route on the west coast of Norway. Both vessels will have a cargo capacity of 120 cars, 12 trailers and 349 passengers. Operation on the 2.4 kilometer-long route will start in January 2018. With this contract, the first four battery-driven ferries in the world will run on technology developed and manufactured by Siemens, the company noted.

To be christened Vision of The Fjords, the 40m long hybrid craft is designed to push the possibilities of green technology and passenger experience. Energy Storage System Ordered for LNG Battery Hybrid Ferry

Corvus Energy, Siemens AS and Fjord1 have announced the award of the contract for the Fannefjord LNG hybrid ferry. The refit Fannefjord will use a 1,050V, 410kWh Energy Storage System (ESS) consisting of 63 Corvus Energy AT6500 advanced lithium polymer batteries. The ESS will be integrated with the existing Siemens drive systems and be powered by two LNG generators. The 123m Fannefjord, sister ship to the vessel Moldefjord (who won the 2010 Green Ship of the Year), has a capacity of 390 passengers and 125 cars or 12 road trailers and 55 cars.

Northrop Grumman Supplies IBS for Norway Ferries

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has supplied the integrated bridge systems (IBS) for two new high-speed passenger ferries for the Norwegian ferry operator Fjord1 Fylkesbaatane. Each of the vessels has been fitted with a complete suite of Northrop Grumman’s Sperry Marine VisionMaster FT navigation electronics including radars, electronic chart display and information system, autopilot, gyrocompass, DGPS, gyrocompass, speed log and other sensors. The system components are connected via an Ethernet network to provide a fully integrated picture for the bridge watchstanders on multi-function workstations. The suites were installed by the company Sigurd Solberg AS Florø, Norway.

Gas Fueled Engines for Coastal Ferries

The first ship sets of Bergen gas engine powered generator sets have now been delivered for ferries fuelled by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The KVGS-12G4 gensets form part of the order for power plant for a series of five double ended ferries which will provide vital links in the main road system on the west coast of Norway. The choice of LNG as fuel for these ferries was driven by two main considerations: reducing exhaust emissions of CO2 and NOx and creating a base load demand for LNG around which a broader local land gas distribution network can be built up. Five vessels are under construction. Three of them will operate on the Halhjem/Sandvikvåg route connection south of Bergen and these will be powered for a 21 knot service speed.
