A Panamanian-flagged car carrier is crewless and adrift in the North Atlantic Ocean after a fire broke out in a cargo hold on Wednesday.The Portuguese Navy said it coordinated the rescue of 22 crew members from the Felicity Ace about 90 nautical miles southwest of the island of Faial, in the Azores. The Portuguese Navy's ocean patrol vessel NRP Setúbal and four nearby merchant ships participated in the rescue.The mariners were transported by a Portuguese Air Force aircraft to Horta airport, and then to a nearby hotel.

An Indonesia-flagged car carrier operated by the NYK Group company PT. NYK-SPIL INDORORO, rescued eight fishermen in distress at the Strait of Malacca last week.The 100-meter roll-on, roll-off (RoRo) ship Kalimantan Leader was sailing from Belawan, Indonesia, to Jakarta, on September 23 when its crew spotted eight fishermen in the water after their vessel sank.The merchant vessel rescued the distressed fishermen immediately, and the eight men were transferred in to an Indonesian Coast Guard vessel on September 24 off Batam Island, Indonesia. A 27-year-old crew member reportedly suffering from concussion-like symptoms was medevaced from a commercial Ro/Ro vessel approximately 14 miles east of Lake Worth Inlet, Fla.   U.S. Coast Guard watchstanders in Miami received a call on VHF-FM marine-band radio channel 16 at 11:15 a.m. from a crewmember aboard the 656-foot Norwegian-flagged car carrier Hoegh Trotter stating a crewmember was in need of medical attention.   A 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Lake Worth Inlet arrived on scene and transported the man to the station where emergency medical services were waiting.   EMS personnel transported the ailing crew member to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Fla.

A car carrier vessel has suffered a fire on one of its decks, approximately 40 miles off Harwich, the U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) reported. The U.S. flagged ship, Courage, reported the fire to the U.K. Coastguard at Dover Maritime Rescue Coordination Center just before 10 p.m., June 2. Using an inbuilt CO2 system to, crew members flooded a large area to put the fire out and continued their journey. The situation is currently contained. A Dover Coastguard RAF Wattisham helicopter was on standby, but was not needed. The vessel is now coming to Southampton where it is being monitored by the National Maritime Operations Center, MCA said.

ASTORIA, Ore. — The Coast Guard is coordinating actions to protect the Oregon Coast from any threat posed by the 648-foot, Singapore-flagged car-carrier Morning Spruce that lost all power and was adrift in 12-foot seas, for approximately 4 ½ hours, southwest of the Columbia River entrance Sunday. At approximately 3:30 p.m., Sunday, the Morning Spruce’s engineer was able to restore the ship’s power. The Coast Guard has directed the Morning Spruce to remain offshore until repairs to the ship have been verified.

The Coast Guard is investigating a minor fuel oil spill that occurred Monday night at approximately 7:00 p.m. at Terminal 6 in Portland from the HYUNDAI NO. 106, a Liberian flagged car carrier. The leak was discovered by the ship's crew during mooring operations when they observed a slight seepage from the vessel's side. Their crew quickly determined that the oil leak was due to several small cracks and they immediately reomoved the fuel from the tank. Coast Guard Sector Portland personnel responded to the incident to ensure all repairs were properly conducted, that all spilled oil was contained and to determine the cause of the cracks. The amount of fuel oil released into the water is estimated to be less than 50 gallons.
