Fincantieri Marine Group, a U.S. subsidiary of Italian shipbuilding giant Fincantieri, announced Thursday that Marco Galbiati has been named as its new CEO effective July 6, while former CEO Dario Deste remains the company’s president. Galbiati was previously FMG’s general manager, a role that he held since 2018. In this capacity he has been heavily involved in all aspects of the business and its efforts to grow the workforce in support of important commercial and military contracts. FMG serves commercial and government customers in the U.S., including the U.S.

Fincantieri Marine Systems North America (FMSNA) has been awarded the maintenance contract for the U.S. Navy’s “Avenger”-class minesweepers. The program has a combined value up to more than $78 million.The Navy operates eight “Avenger”-class vessels, which are homeported in Bahrain and Japan. All of the vessels have diesel engines produced by Isotta Fraschini Motori, another Fincantieri’s subsidiary, of which FMSNA technicians are experts. Marine engineering firm BMT has been awarded a prime contract to conduct industry studies for the U.S. Navy’s T-ARC(X) cable ship replacement program.The Navy’s only operational cable ship, the nearly 40-year-old USNS Zeus (T-ARC 7), is approaching the end of its service life, and the Navy is interested in recapitalizing its undersea cable installation and repair capabilities, as well as adding the new mission sets of acoustic, hydrographic, and bathymetric survey; and deploying and recovering unmanned underwater vessels.

Freight rates for large dry cargo ships on key Asian routes, which hit three-year highs this week, are likely to rise further on a shortage of ships available for immediate charter, brokers said. Rates for 180,000 deadweight tonne (DWT) capesize ships are set to break $10 a tonne from Australia to China in the next few days, while rates could also surpass $20 a tonne from Brazil to China. "There are more chances of rates breaking $10 than $20 because the Australian market is more active among miners and vessel operators," a Singapore-based capesize broker said on Thursday.

Freight rates for large capesize dry cargo vessels on key Asian routes, which hit multi-month highs on Tuesday, could climb further on increased chartered activity by miners and operators, brokers said. "Only Rio Tinto has been active this week - it picked off the injured animals - fixing ships for less than the last fixture, dampening the market by 50 cents a tonne," a Singapore capesize dry cargo broker said on Friday. "There's been no competition - no BHP Billiton, no Fortescue Metals Group and no operators," the broker added.

Six Robert Allan-designed Advanced Rotortugs ART 85-32W for Perth-based Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) will be driven by Schottel Rudderpropellers. The order is about the delivery of 18 SRP 430 FP (1765 kW each). The vessels will be built by Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam. FMG cited Schottel's strong presence in Western Australia and Port Hedland for more than 10 years as a benefit for contracting the thrusters. Rotortugs were chosen for their outstanding maneuverability and capabilities.

Shipowners seeking $10 per tonne from Brazil-China; dry cargo demand to remain subdued this year. Freight rates for large capesize dry cargo ships on key Asian routes may firm up next week on increased chartering activity, tighter tonnage supply and possible port disruption caused by bad weather in China, ship brokers said on Thursday. "The general consensus is there will be an improvement in rates next week," a Singapore-based capesize broker said. Shipowners on Thursday were already offering higher rates of about $10 per tonne for iron ore cargoes from Brazil to China due to limited availability of ships, brokers said. "I think they are being a bit greedy," a Shanghai capesize broker said, adding the prevailing rate was around $9 per tonne.

Rates from Australia to fall, Brazil rates to nudge higher. Freight rates for large capesize dry cargo ships on key Asian routes could diverge next week with rates from Australia to China trending lower on weaker sentiment while prices from Brazil to China could rise on tight vessel supply, ship brokers said. That comes as freight rates slipped on Wednesday from multi-month highs hit on Monday. "Sentiment in the Pacific is not good. There is still room for rates from Australia to drop further," a Shanghai capesize broker said on Thursday. Fortescue Metals Group chartered a capesize ship at a rate of $4.70 per tonne on Thursday to haul around 160,000 tonnes of iron ore from Australia to China, brokers said.

Shipbuilder Fincantieri and the University of Rhode Island (URI), on behalf of its International Engineering Program (IEP), has signed an agreement establishing the beginning of mutual collaboration to develop academic and cultural interchange. The agreement, of an initial duration of three years with renewal possibility, will begin in the first half of 2017 and will be dedicated to both undergraduate and graduate students from URI. In particular, Fincantieri will consider the insertion of some of the most skilled students from the faculties of mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering of the American university, in an internship program to be held at its premises in Italy.

Bay Shipbuilding Company (BSC) of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, a subsidiary of Fincantieri Marine Group (FMG), has been awarded a contract to build two 155,000-barrel capacity barges and two 6,000 HP tugs for Kirby Corporation. Fincantieri Marine Group (FMG) subsidiary, Bay Shipbuilding Company (BSC) of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, has been awarded a USCG contract for drydock repairs to the United States Coast Guard Cutter Hollyhock (WLB-21) and a second USCG repair and sustainment contract for the icebreaker Mackinaw (WLBB-30). Hollyhock is a Juniper Class Seagoing Buoy Tender measuring 225-feet long. The Mackinaw is a 240-foot heavy icebreaker for operations on the Great Lakes. Both ships were built by FMG subsidiary, Marinette Marine Corporation (MMC), and launched in January 2003 and November 2005 respectively.

Tsuneishi have taken an order at their Cebu facility in the Philippines for a total of three 81,600 DWT Kamsarmax for Japanese buyers. Nissen Kaiun declared two further options taking their total series on order to five vessels, with an additional order for a single unit by Hisafuku Kisen – all due for delivery in 2016. In the smaller sizes, China Navigation announced an order for four firm 38,000 DWT Handysize at Imabari, with delivery planned for 2017. Clarkson Hellas note that a yet unknown Greek buyer has contracted one firm plus up to four option 15,500 DWT Self-Unloaders at Nantong Rainbow. Understood to be for use carrying rock salt, delivery is planned within 2016.

Trelleborg met a tight time frame to deliver its state-of-the-art Quick Release Hooks (QRHs) with load monitoring, remote release and a central monitoring system to the Herb Elliott Port in Australia. By delivering ahead of schedule and avoiding the need to equipment by air freight, Trelleborg said it save its customer, Fortescue Metals Group Limited (FMG), a substantial amount of money. After initially winning the contract to supply four units back in late 2011, Trelleborg Marine Systems was chosen to supply a further six earlier this year.
