Trucks, trains, ships and oil rigs are all potential targets for criminal organizations. Organizations that own, use or transport high value assets recognise the need to protect their goods and employees, especially when they are at their most vulnerable - when in remote or isolated situations, at night and when operating alone. By their very nature, trucks, trains, ships and oil rigs are all potential targets for criminal organisations. Furthermore, monitoring systems, early warning and deterrent technology have not been available to address this need at a remotely affordable cost.

Unique Technologies Improve Port Security

Practical results from the SUPPORT (Security UPgrade for PORTS) project, coordinated by BMT Group Ltd. and part-funded by the European Commission’s FP7 Security Research Program will be demonstrated to key stakeholders at Stena Line’s ferry terminals starting at Masthuggskajen in the Port of Gothenburg on May 7-8, 2014. Comprising a collaboration of 21 European organizations, SUPPORT integrates legacy port systems with new surveillance and information management systems. It efficiently supports the complexity of a real port environment through a more integrated, holistic approach.

EU R&D Project to Exhibit Security Model

A practical demonstration of the ARENA R&D project, part funded by the EU, will be delivered at Sagem’s premises in Massy, Paris on April 16, 2014. ARENA (Architecture for Recognition of thrEats to mobile assets using Networks of Affordable sensors) was developed to enable the automatic detection and recognition of threats against mobile critical assets such as trucks, trains and ships, as well as offshore platforms. ARENA uses multisensory data analysis and will be showcased by the project team using a truck.

ABS: Approval in Principle for Floating Renewable Energy Plant

ABS has issued its first Approval in Principle (AIP) for a new concept renewable energy design in which a moored spar uses ammonia in a closed-cycle process to produce electrical power for a commercial utility grid. Unlike wind, tidal or solar power the advanced design for this Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) system can deliver constant output 24 hours a day. “This concept combines proven offshore principles with off-the-shelf power, technology and proprietary innovations, all assembled in a unique way,” says Ian Simpson, ABS Director of Offshore Technology and Business Development, Americas Division. Developed by OTEC International (OTI) LLC of Baltimore, Maryland, the approach converts liquid ammonia into gas in a heat exchanger using warm ocean surface water.

ABS to Class ChevronTexaco Truss Spar

ABS will class the ChevronTexaco “Tahiti” truss spar, destined for deepwater Gulf of Mexico. Targeted for 4,200 feet of water, the “Tahiti” unit demonstrates the industry’s latest innovations—including the first spar with no drilling capability, no surface wellheads—and is among the first spar projects to utilize ABS’ industry-first guide for building and classing these specialized deepwater floating production units, says Dick Vukin, ABS project manager. Lloyd's Register's King to Retire

Lloyd’s Register announces the retirement of J. Rod King, Global Floating Offshore Installation (FOI) Business Manager. Mr. King has elected to take early retirement in mid-September 2007 to address family health issues. Lloyd’s Register North America FOI and Classification Manager, Keith Charles, will assume some of King’s previous activities until King’s replacement is named. Offshore: ABS to Class Cell Spar for Kerr-McGee

ABS is classing the industry's first cell spar destined for Kerr-McGee's Red Hawk field in deepwater Gulf of Mexico. The project marks ABS' fifth classification contract from Kerr-McGee Oil & Gas for a spar offshore facility. The project will draw on ABS' experience with spar technology and industry expertise for deepwater developments, says Luiz Feijo, ABS project manager. "ABS offers Kerr-McGee the expertise to face the technical challenges of the Red Hawk frontier project while meeting the schedule requirements," said Feijo. The entire project, adds Feijo, is expected to complete within two years of project sanction, with first-gas scheduled for second quarter 2004. "Engineering and fabrication are proceeding in parallel.
