Cuba Cancels Economic Fair as Imports Plummet

Cash-strapped Cuba has canceled its annual international trade and investment fair slated for November due to the pandemic, state-run media reported on Friday, even as fallout from the novel coronavirus hammers revenues and imports.Container traffic at the port of Mariel, responsible for 90% of containers entering the country, was down between 20% and 25% through May, compared with the same period last year, according to a shipping source with access to the data.Cuba does not reveal key economic information in a timely manner…

IMCA Updates Guidance on Shipyard Safety

The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) has updated its ‘Guidance on Safety in Shipyards’ IMCA HSSE 032, IMCA M 221. New Courses Fill Catering Knowledge Gap

A survey of officers and crew by a leading tanker owner suggests catering and galley staff throughout the industry may be in urgent need of training, according to Seagull. The computer-based training provider draws attention to a thorough survey of all ranks undertaken by Finaval S.p.A, a tanker owner, in cooperation with CIRM (International Radio-Medical Centre Rome) and UNICAM (Centre for Clinical Research, Telemedicine and Telepharmacy, Camerino University) focusing on knowledge and understanding of food hygiene and food handling best practice.

Cruise Ship Owner Takes Steps Following CDC Inspection Failure

A CDC team found trolleys and food hidden from them in crew cabins when they inspected the cruise liner 'Silver Shadow'. The incident resulted in the ship receiving an unsatisfactory score from the CDC Vessel Sanitation Program inspectors. The government report states that CDC inspectors boarded the Silver Shadow during an unannounced inspection last month and found a number of violations, including an organized effort to hide more than 15 full trolleys of cooked foods, milk, raw meats…

Seven Foreign Ships Detained in U.K. in July

Control safety inspection. under detention from previous months. detentions in comparison to June. decrease of 0.3% compared to June's 12 month rate. for 1 day at the London International Cruise Terminal, Tilbury. was carried out in conjunction with London Port Health Authority. nautical publications not up to date. with cockroaches and poor quality of drinking water. relevant areas. in the drinking water was not being adequately controlled. standards. Measures were put in to place to rectify the deficiencies. cargo ship was detained in Southampton on 28th July 2004. a poor condition with 49 deficiencies recorded. the ship met the requirements of the relevant International conventions. The ship is still under detention at the end of July.
