US Navy to Bar Confederate Flags from Ships and Bases

The U.S. Navy is working to ban the Confederate battle flag from all public spaces on Navy installations, ships and aircraft, the service said on Tuesday, as the military and the country as a whole grapple with questions about racial inequality.The Navy made the move amid protests across the United States and other countries sparked by the May 25 death of George Floyd, an Africa-American man who died after a white policeman knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.In a statement…

Washington Navy Yard Tragedy TAPS Fund Created

TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors) has set up a "Navy Yard Tragedy Family Support Fund" for those affected by the recent tragedy. They have experience and expertise in providing this support for families in circumstances like this, such as for the recent Fort Hood shooting victims. TAPS is the 24/7 tragedy assistance front line resource for anyone grieving the death of a loved one in, or in support of, military service to America - including the surviving families of contractors and government civilians.

Alion Awarded $47m Contract

The Army Battle Command Directorate has awarded Alion Science and Technology a contract valued at up to $47m to support the command with analytic, engineering, programmatic and scientific subject matter expertise. The indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity support services contract runs for a base year with four, one-year options. The work begins this month and will run through July 2012, if all options are exercised. Alion will provide expertise to support statutory, regulatory and policy functions and tasks assigned to the Army G-37 Battle Command Directorate. The work includes modeling and simulation management, education and training support, software blocking management and monitoring of the Central Technical Support Facility at Fort Hood, Texas.

Military Support in Katrina's Wake

Almost 60,000 U.S. service members are aiding in rescue and recovery efforts in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, Defense Department officials said Sept. Army Corps of Engineers personnel have closed the breaches in the levees surrounding New Orleans and have begun pumping out the water that has inundated the city, officials said. Roughly 41,500 National Guard personnel are on duty in the area devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Almost 17,500 active duty personnel are on ships or on the ground in the region. Joint Task Force Katrina is being relocated to USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7). The amphibious ship is docked in New Orleans, and the shift will improve command and control of the rescue and recovery efforts, DoD officials said.

Navy Ships Respond for Hurricane Relief

Joint Task Force Katrina is setting up today at Camp Shelby, Miss. , as the Defense Department's focal point to support the Federal Emergency Management Agency's relief efforts along the Gulf Coast, Air Force Maj. Eric Butterbaugh, a U. S. Northern Command spokesman, confirmed today. Army Lt. Gen. Russel Honore, 1st U. S. Army commander, will head the task force to coordinate DoD active-duty support for disaster relief efforts in the hurricane's aftermath, much of it already under way or in the works. Meanwhile, the number of National Guardsmen on duty in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida rose to almost 8,300 today.
