USCG Leaders to Discuss Emerging Challenges

U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Paul Zukunft and U.S. Southern Command Commander Gen. John Kelly will host a program titled “Emerging Challenges in the Western Hemisphere” at the Abraham Lincoln Hall Auditorium at Fort Lesley J. McNair on Oct. 7, 2014, at 1 pm. The recently signed Coast Guard Western Hemisphere Strategy addresses transnational threats and maritime challenges that threaten the security of our Nation, markets, and oceans over the next 10 years. ADM Bob Papp’s Coast Guard tenure continues to be one of low profile victories, calm leadership and an emphasis on doing what is right for the Coast Guard. U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Bob Papp delivered the 2013 State of the Coast Guard (SOCG) Address at the National Defense University at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, D.C. on February 27. Adm. Papp assumed command of the Coast Guard in May of 2010, he had the unenviable task of following perhaps the most charismatic leader the Coast Guard has ever had. The high profile Thad Allen, dubbed by the mainstream media as “the rock star” Commandant, also more earned his reputation by firm leadership over the course of more than one highly visible crisis after another.

Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Bob Papp delivers State of the Coast Guard Address. U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Bob Papp delivered the 2013 State of the Coast Guard Address at the National Defense University at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, D.C., Wednesday. The Commandant highlighted the Coast Guard’s response to Hurricane Sandy, emphasizing the preparedness of Coast Guard Captains of the Ports working with U.S. Department of Homeland Security components and industry in advance of the storm.

Change of Watch for Coast Guard Vice Commandant

Vice Adm. Sally Brice-O’Hara was relieved by Vice Adm. John P. Currier as vice commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard during a military change of watch ceremony held here Friday morning at Fort Lesley J. McNair. Brice-O’Hara retired from the Coast Guard after more than 37 years of service as part of the same ceremony. Brice-O’Hara assumed the duties of the 27th vice commandant May 24, 2010. As second in command she was responsible for executing the commandant’s strategic intent, managing internal organizational governance and serving as the component acquisition executive. Papp Relieves Allen as Coast Guard Commandant

Adm. Robert J. Papp, Jr., assumed command as the 24th commandant of the Coast Guard on May 25, relieving Adm. Thad W. Allen during a military ceremony at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, D. During the ceremony, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates awarded Allen the Defense Distinguished Service Medal. Coast Guard Establishes Deployable Operations Group

The U.S. Coast Guard will stand-up the Deployable Operations Group during an establishment ceremony 7 p.m. Friday at Fort Lesley J. McNair. The Deployable Operations Group aligns all Coast Guard deployable, specialized forces under a single, unified command headed by a Rear Adm. Thomas F. Atkin. The command will provide organized, equipped, and trained forces to Coast Guard and interagency operational and tactical commanders. Deployable specialized forces are comprised of approximately 3,000 Coast Guard personnel from 12 Maritime Safety and Security Teams, the Maritime Security Response Team, two Tactical Law Enforcement Teams, eight Port Security Units, three National Strike Teams and the National Strike Force Coordination Center.
