First Ship with Fire Safety Adapted to Methanol

The world’s first ship to run on methanol will soon sail international waters after the fire risk assessment by SP Fire Research was approved. Methanol has long been handled with traditional fire protection in cargo pump-rooms on tankers, but a deeper understanding of the fuel called for a new approach to design fire safety. Drilling Rig Strikes Oil Again in Barents Sea

ENI has successfully drilled the appraisal well 7220/5-1 in the Skrugard discovery field 200 kilometres off the Norwegian coast.The well was drilled at a water depth of 388 metres, reaching a total depth of 1,740 metres at a site located approximately 3 kilometres from the Skrugard-1 discovery. A gas column of about 25 metres and an oil column of 48 metres was encountered in the Middle - Lower Jurassic reservoir, Stø & Nordmela Formations. Intensive data collection and sampling have been carried out in the well-bore and the results show a reservoir of excellent quality. The aim of the appraisal well was to prove the hydrocarbon extension in the middle section of the Skrugard structure.

Bellingham Marine Replaces Fuel Dock

The transient fuel dock at Morningstar Marinas Mayport has recently been replaced. Located at the Mayport Inlet just East of Jacksonville, Fla., the fuel dock replacement was part of the complete redevelopment of the marina waterfront. “The basin was in-operable and the fuel dock had been destroyed in a collision,” reported Matt Shapiro, Assistant Vice President of Morningstar Properties. Morningstar Properties hired Bellingham Marine to replace the 14-ft by 229-ft fuel dock. “We built the original fuel dock in 1994,” said Ron Carey, Manager of Project Development for Bellingham Marine.

Free Gas from Ribcraft

Ribcraft announced a unique solution to raising fuel costs - free gas for the season. "Consumers have been shaken by the spike in fuel prices. There's been a lot of talk about boaters staying ashore this coming season because of sky rocketing fuel prices" said Brian Gray, President of Ribcraft. "We don't think gas prices should keep people away from doing what they love to do or have to do. There are already states and municipalities planning to cut back on-water patrols due to fuel prices; we see that as a recipe for disaster and want to do our part to insure cut backs don't happen". Gray continues, "Ribcraft is proud to be the first boat manufacturer to offer customers, both professional and recreational, relief from rising fuel prices".

Offshore: OTC Announces Technology Winners

The Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) announces 15 winners for its inaugural Spotlight on New Technology Program. These winners are recognized before, during and after the 35th annual OTC, 3-6 May, Reliant Center at Reliant Park in Houston. New Technology program, " said Rod Allan, OTC .04 Chairman. Applications for the Spotlight on New Technology were distributed at OTC .03 and were due 9 January 2004. Submissions had to meet four criteria: new and innovative, proven, broad interest, and significant impact. Winners will be recognized on site at this year's conference, scheduled May 3-6, on the exhibition floor and in the registration area. Spotlight on New Technology will continue as an annual recognition program coinciding with OTC.
