GAO Compares Costs of Freight Shipment Modes
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) issued its report comparing the costs of road, rail, and waterways freight shipments that are absorbed by the government and not passed on to consumers. The analysis shows that on average additional freight service provided by trucks generated significantly more costs that were not passed on to consumers than the same amount of freight service provided by either rail or water. The report estimates that freight trucking costs that were not passed on to consumers were at least six times greater than rail costs and at least nine times greater than waterways costs per million ton-miles of freight transport. Partnership Eyes Reduced CO2 Emissions
Logistics company Greencarrier Freight Service and shipping company CMA-CGM Scandinavia have initiated a long-term collaboration project to cut joint CO2 emissions by 30 percent by 2020. The partners aim to achieve this goal through the development of new and sustainable logistics solutions that will also be made available on the market. One example is a joint solution involving sea transport to Gothenburg and further transport to Torsvik, where trucks have now been replaced by rail transport. This change has resulted in a 70 persent reduction in CO2 emissions.

The opening of a new freight service to Rotterdam is a welcome development, presenting further opportunities for Swedish industry. The company behind the new service is the ro-ro* carrier CLdN, whose vessels will call at the Port of Gothenburg twice a week. Online Retailer Amazon Expands into Ocean Shipping
Amazon.com Inc's China arm has registered as an ocean freight forwarder, according to the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission, a move that will give it more control over shipping products from Chinese factories to U.S. shoppers. The registration is the latest indication that Amazon plans to expand its logistics reach to cut costs for its retail business and potentially provide third-party logistics services to other industries. Its new status as a freight forwarder, or "non-vessel operating common carrier," gives Amazon, the world's largest online retailer, a foothold in the $350 billion a year ocean freight business. It will not operate ships but subcontract that work.
CP Ships Acquires Borg Intl.
CP Ships Limited has acquired Borg International Freight Services Inc. Based in Montreal, Borg specializes in ocean and air freight forwarding and employs 22 people. Its annual gross revenue in 2004 was US $14 million. "The acquisition of Borg is a continuation of our plan to selectively develop logistics services as a way of leveraging strong regional market positions and adding value to our core container services. CMA CGM Acquires India's LCL Logistix
CMA CGM has acquired a 60 percent stake in India's LCL Logistix as it tries to expand in freight forwarding services, the French shipping group said on Wednesday. CMA CGM, the world's third-largest container shipping firm, did not disclose the price of the deal to buy Mumbai-based LCL Logistix, which had sales of $120 million last year and operates freight services across India as well as in North America and East Africa. The acquisition is being done by the group's CMA CGM LOG unit which runs logistics services to complement sea transport. P&O Stena Lines Resumes Operations
P&O Stena Line has resumed full passenger and freight services from the British port of Dover after French fishermen began to lift their blockade of French ports. P&O spokeswoman Gail Isted said that the company's vessel 'Dover' had left Calais in France for Dover in mid-afternoon. "P&O Stena Line ferries will now leave Dover and Calais every 45 minutes and will revert to their usual sailing patterns overnight," the company said in a statement. Isted added that delays to passenger cars of about nine hours and to trucks of six hours were being reduced and would be cleared some time on Friday (Sept. 1). P&O Stena Line ran six tourist ferries from Dover to the Belgian port of Zeebrugge both on Wednesday and Thursday to avoid the blockade, she said.
