Post-Brexit Troubles Spell More Job Losses for UK Fishing Sector

Britain could lose more jobs in its fishing sector if the current delays and increased costs involved in exporting to the EU post-Brexit are not ironed out soon, industry groups told British government officials on Tuesday.Speaking at an Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) select committee inquiry, representatives of Britain's fishing sector said small to medium-sized enterprises were especially at risk and called on the government to urgently negotiate new export rules with the EU."(Even) if we get (export) systems sorted, we will still have cost implications.

DP World Sets Its Sights on Hyperloop Cargo Shipping

Dubai-based port operator DP World has partnered with Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Hyperloop One to create a new venture that aims to provide hyperloop-enabled cargo systems.DP World and the U.S.-based Virgin Hyperloop One introduced their vision for “the future of on-demand freight transportation” at an event on April 29 at the historic vessel Queen Elizabeth 2.The joint venture, called DP World Cargospeed, will set out to be the world’s first to ship cargo with hyperloop technology.

Grangemouth Port sees Record Volume

The Port of Grangemouth, Scotland’s largest container facility has enjoyed one of its busiest seasons, with over 50,000 TEUs (Twenty Foot Equivalent Units) being handled at the port in the last two months. This four-year high is the result of a buoyant fresh food export season utilising the port’s refrigerated container handling capability which has set Grangemouth on track for record breaking volumes this quarter. In October and November, the port recorded a 30% increase on refrigerated container volumes (known as ‘reefers’ *) year on year and during November alone, the port handled a record 1400 reefers. The bulk of these reefers are being used for the export of Scottish potato seed from farms across Scotland to far flung places around the world including Egypt

Hanjin Containership Set to Dock in Vancouver

A container vessel that spent months sitting off Canada's west coast due to the collapse of a major South Korea shipping company is set to dock in Vancouver on Thursday, port and union officials said. The Hanjin Scarlet, with nearly 800 containers on board, has been sitting some 45 km (28 miles) outside of Prince Rupert for several months, said Peter Lahay, an inspector and coordinator with the International Transport Workers Federation. Emily Hamer, a spokeswoman at the Port of Vancouver, confirmed that the vessel would be arriving at the port. She referred questions about the ship's cargo to terminal operator DP World. Officials there could not immediately be reached for comment.

Forth Ports Invests in Grangemouth Refrigeration Containers

As part of the move to boost for importers and exporters of fresh produce using Scotland’s largest container terminal , the port of Grangemouth is to receive investment from its owners, Forth Ports Ltd to increase its capacity for refrigerated containers. Forth Ports is significantly investing in extending the electricity supply infrastructure at Grangemouth from 126 specialist power supply points to 432. Refrigerated containers – known as ‘reefers’ – need power immediately on arrival to keep their contents fresh until being loaded on to vessels for export or collection by haulage firms for delivery across Scotland. North P&I Club Advises Inclusion of Ebola-Specific Clauses

The 180 million GT, ‘A' rated North P&I Club is advising shipowner Members to take great care to protect the health of their crew members when calling at ebola-affected ports in west Africa. In the latest issue of its loss prevention newsletter Signals, it also recommends that shipowners incorporate ebola-specific clauses in their charterparties. According to head of loss prevention Tony Baker, ‘Members trading or being requested to trade to an ebola-affected area must consider both the health and commercial risks very carefully. North recommends a series of control measures that shipowners calling at affected ports may implement, including preventing shore leave and unauthorised access to the vessel

The Ferguson Group announces that it has been acquired by Brambles Limited for an enterprise value of £320 million. Brambles Limited is a supply-chain logistics company operating in more than 50 countries, primarily through the CHEP and IFCO brands. The group specializes in the pooling of unit-load equipment and associated services, focusing on the outsourced management of pallets, crates and containers. Brambles primarily serves the consumer goods, dry grocery, fresh food, retail and general manufacturing supply chains.

Maersk Line Art-Box Arrives in Philadelphia

Maersk Line, an ocean transportation company and a unit of the Maersk Group, announced today the arrival of the Maersk Line Reefer Art-Box, a 40’ high-cube, at the Port of Philadelphia marking the first voyage of the container designed to promote container shipping. Maersk Container Industry Up For Two Innovation Prizes

An advanced insulation foam and ingenious ways to transport fresh food have helped make Maersk Container Industry (MCI) a finalist in two competition categories, CSR and innovation, at this year’s Containerization International Awards. MCI competes for the “Technological Innovation of the Year” prize in recognition of its automatic ventilation, AV+, which saves energy by controlling fresh air ventilation inside refrigerated containers. An affiliated technology, controlled atmosphere (CA), keeps track of how fruits and vegetables ripen and respire inside the container during transport.

FV Tai Yuan 227 Released by Pirates

Although exact details surrounding the situation are not known at this time, there are indications that the Taiwanese flagged fishing vessel Tai Juan 227 has been released from pirate control. The vessel, which had a crew of 28 (Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipinos, Kenyans and Mozambicans) at the time of the attack, was pirated on 6 May 2010 whilst operating 700 Nm North East of The Seychelles. Although direct contact with the crew has not been possible, the vessel’s owners apparently received a call from the master stating that they had been released but that they did not know why.
