Four Japanese Companies Form Consortium for Eco-Friendly VLCCs Concepts

Idemitsu Tanker, IINO Kaiun Kaisha (IINO Lines), Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), and Nihon Shipyard have established a consortium to conduct joint research and development of design concepts for Malacca Max-type very large crude oil carriers (VLCCs).The design concepts, including machinery and environment equipment, will be developed with a view of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the consortium that was initiated by Idemitsu Tanker said.Aiming to reduce emissions by 40% or more compared to previous levels…

MOL Sets Terms of Green Bonds

Japanese shipping major Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), the first company in Japan to issue sustainability bonds aimed at individual investors, has revealed interest and investor details of its new JPY 20bn ($185.7 million) “sustainability bonds” to fund its latest green initiatives.The funds raised will be used for several purposes, including establishing a maritime academy in the Philippines and installation of environmentally friendly equipment or scrubbers on board its vessels. The new bonds will be offered to both institutional and individual investors. Top Japanese companies in Japan have pledged to invest in the green bonds. The company published the list which includes banks, insurance companies, financial institutions, universities etc."These bonds are unsecured and carry no guarantees.

Yang Ming Sinks into Red

Taiwanese ocean carrier Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation (Yang Ming) registered a net loss of  NTD3.81 billion (USD 129.1 million) for Q2.However, the Q2 consolidated revenues total NTD33.6 billion (USD1.14 billion) was up 1.12% from the same period in the previous year. The business volume of 1.29 million TEUs rose 11.84% year-on-year.In the meantime, for the first half of 2018, Yang Ming’s consolidated revenues totaled NTD64.6 billion (USD2.19 billion), up 1.81% compared with the same period in the previous year. The first half 2018 business volume totaled 2.52 million TEUs, climbing 10.28% from the same period in the previous year.

Germany Orders LNG Fueled Research Ship

The Fassmer shipyard in Germany is currently cinstructing a new research vessel to be owned by Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie (BSH), the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency. The new 75-meter-long ship, the Atair, will replace her 30 year old namesake, and will be the first German research vessel operating on liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel. The engines for the new vessel will be supplied by Wärtsilä, who will also supply exhaust cleaning systems based on selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology and the LNGPac system for complete fuel gas handling.

MacGregor Solutions for LNG-powered Cruise Ships

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has secured orders for environmentally-friendly equipment for four next-generation eco-cruise ships which will be built in Germany and Finland. The vessels will be the first liquefied natural gas-powered cruise ships to enter the market. The orders were booked into first quarter 2016 order intake. "Cruise ships operate in some of the world's most fragile ecosystems and a rising demand from both authorities and operators requires that onboard systems are as environmentally-friendly as possible," says Lars Öberg, Sales Manager, RoRo at MacGregor. MacGregor deliveries include electrically-operated shell doors and electric frequency-controlled Hatlapa winches.

Port of New York/New Jersey Reports Cargo Record

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced that annual cargo volumes in the port set a new record in 2014, surpassing the previous record set in 2012. The port said it handled 3,342,286 cargo containers in 2014, an increase of 5.4 percent over the previous year and 4.1 percent more than in 2012, when the previous annual record was established. The record volumes allowed the port to maintain its position as the busiest on the East Coast with nearly 30 percent of the total market share, the port authority noted.

Operators of articulated tugs and barges, or ATBs, say they like the maneuverability, weather reliability, stability, speed of these units, and the manner in which the tug pushes the barge. As a marine transportation concept, they can also simply be described as versatile. ATBs move petroleum, chemicals, coal, grain, containerized cargo and rail cars for customers on the U.S. coasts, rivers, the Great Lakes and overseas. As a result, demand for articulated units expanded in the last two decades with new technology.

GCSG Launches Tank Barge for FMT

Gulf Coast Shipyard Group (GCSG) announced the launch of FMT 6000, the first of Florida Marine Transportation’s (FMT) new 6000 series 6.4 PSI–30,000 barrel environmentally friendly tank barges. The new series continues Florida Marine Transportation’s tradition of having the latest design and most environmentally-friendly equipment operating on America’s waterways. Utilizing proprietary engineering developed for FMT by the engineering group of Guarino & Cox, this series of new barges minimizes vapors escaping into the atmosphere while increasing safety factors when the barge is in operation.

The amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) hosted the Senate Committee for Energy and Natural Resources and Chair of the Subcommittee on Water and Power, to discuss Navy and Marine Corps energy initiative programs. The committee members toured exhibits showcasing new green technologies which will help the military conserve energy and improve consumption efficiency. Each exhibit provided a glimpse of environmentally friendly equipment that will enhance operational, tactical and fuel efficiency which is critical to the today's military.

Aker Yards Wins Unique Design Solution Wins DOF Contract

Aker Yards has been awarded a contract with DOF ASA to build an innovative LNG-powered platform supply vessel. The vessel is designed and equipped with the newest and most innovative environmentally friendly equipment and solutions. After delivery from Aker Yards in in 2010, the vessel will operate on charter for StatoilHydro ASA. The selected solutions and engine systems for the new and modern platform supply vessel (PSV) are a response to the focus on more environmental cautious ship transportation of various bulk cargos, liquids and equipment to and from offshore locations world wide. The vessel will be equipped with duel fuel engines able to run on both LNG and ordinary marine diesel.
