Wärtsilä to Supply Dual-Fuel Engines for Korean LNG Carriers

Wärtsilä has received an order from Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. of Korea to supply four sets of Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines to power a series of 155,000 m3 dual-fuel-electric LNG carriers, with an option on four more sets. The ships were ordered last month by BP Shipping of the UK and are scheduled for delivery from Hyundai Heavy Industries' shipyard in Ulsan and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries' shipyard in Mokpo from the middle of 2007 onwards. Each ship will be equipped with two twelve- and two nine-cylinder Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines with an aggregate power of 39.9 MW. Delivery of these engines from Wärtsilä's Trieste factory will commence in early 2006.

Dual-fuel Engines for DEME’s New Dredger

Anglo Belgian Corporation, a manufacturer of medium speed diesel engines, announced the sale of two 16VDZD dual fuel engines that will power a new build vessel for the Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group DEME. This agreement was officialized with the Dutch shipyard Royal IHC. The commissioning of the dredger Minerva is scheduled for late 2016, making it the first dredging vessel that will be equipped with dual fuel engines, in addition to DEME's other trailing suction hopper dredger Scheldt River that will be built and put into service around the same time.

Wärtsilä Wins 16 LNG Engine Orders

In the first two months of 2006, Wärtsilä Corporation won orders for a further 16 Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines to power four LNG (liquefied natural gas) carriers contracted in Korea. In January Wärtsilä was awarded an order to supply two sets of four Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines to Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) of Korea. These engines will be installed in two dual-fuel-electric LNG carriers contracted by Bergesen Worldwide Gas of Norway, and are the first Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines to be ordered by DSME. In February Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries of Korea ordered two sets of four Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines to power two dual-fuel-electric LNG carriers for Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) of Japan.

Wärtsilä 34DF Recieves U.S. EPA Certificate

Wärtsila obtained certification of emission standard compliance from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel engines. It will enable Wärtsilä to strongly enter the American market with marine engine technology that offers operators and owners the option of using either diesel or gas as fuel. Jumbo Orders LNG-powered Heavy Lift Ship

Dutch transportation and installation contractor Jumbo said it has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with shipbuilder China Merchants Industry Holdings (CMIH) for the construction of a new heavy lift crane vessel (HLCV) scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2020. The DP2 vessel will feature dual fuel engines capable of operating on liquefied natural gas (LNG), and will be built to serve the offshore wind and the offshore oil and gas industries. “Despite the current offshore climate, we are committing to this industry long term,” said Jumbo managing director, Michael Kahn.

Wärtsilä and HHI to Set Up Joint Venture

Wärtsilä and Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd (HHI) have signed an agreement to set up a 50/50-owned joint venture in Korea to manufacture dual-fuel engines for LNG (liquefied natural gas) carriers. The total investment in the company will be EUR 58 million, Wärtsilä's share being EUR 29 million. The name of the company will be Wärtsilä Hyundai Engine Company Ltd and the intended location is South Korea. The technology shift towards dual-fuel machinery in LNG carriers has significantly increased demand for Wärtsilä's dual-fuel engines. The main market is in Korea. Demand in the market is forecast to continue growing in pace with the increasing demand for natural gas.

A new shuttle tanker concept developed by the world’s largest shuttle tanker services provider, Teekay, will offer a new level of innovation, says Wärtsilä, whose smart technology solutions will be featured on the new vessels. Wärtsilä-Hyundai Engine Company, a joint venture between Wärtsilä and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI),  inaugurated its new factory in . The 50/50 joint venture company manufactures Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines for LNG carriers and other marine applications. The optimal capacity of the factory is 100-120 engines a year. During the inauguration, the first engine manufactured by the joint venture company was started by Mr Ole Johansson, President and CEO of Wärtsilä and Dr Keh-Sik Min, Vice Chairman and CEO of HHI. The Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engine has pioneered an industry change.

ClassNK Approves Niigata Dual-fuel Engine Design

Classification society ClassNK has granted approval to the design of the new 28AHX-DF dual-fuel engine developed by Niigata Power Systems Co., Ltd. The new engine is slated to be used as the main engine on a new LNG-fuelled tugboat being built by Keihin Dock Co., Ltd. for NYK Line. The vessel will be Japan’s first LNG fuelled vessel, excluding LNG carriers. New regulations for Emission Control Areas (ECA), including new stricter limits on sulfur emissions as well as the IMO’s Tier III NOx emission limits, are driving demand for new engine and emission control technologies.

Screw Compressors for Dual-fuel LNG Carrier

Kobe Steel, Ltd. said it has received an order to supply the first two screw compressors for use with marine dual fuel engines. The compressors will be installed in an LNG carrier to be owned by a 50/50 joint venture between Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Co., Ltd. (or MOL) and Itochu Corporation for Uniper Global Commodities SE, a subsidiary of Uniper SE, Europe’s one of largest power and gas companies. Uniper Global Commodities will charter the new carrier for 20 years. 51/60DF Engines Pass FATs

MAN Diesel’s type 51/60DF four-stroke, medium speed dual-fuel gas engine has passed the final landmark on its way to its first commercial applications in the marine sector. Having gained type approval in autumn 2007 on the seven cylinder prototype engine in the presence of eight major classification societies, the first production versions of the 51/60DF recently completed their factory acceptance tests (FAT) at MAN Diesel’s Augsburg works. The FATs were witnessed by representatives from shipyard STX of Korea, ship owner EN Elcano of Spain and classification society Bureau Veritas.

Wärtsilä to Power LNG Offshore Construction Vessel

Wärtsilä is to supply the engines and other propulsion machinery for a new offshore construction vessel being built at the Cosco shipyard in China. The ship owner is Belgian operator Dredging International (DEME). This will be the first vessel of its kind to be fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and in addition to the dual-fuel engines, Wärtsilä will also provide its LNGPac fuel storage and supply system and propulsion systems. The orders with Wärtsilä were booked in the fourth quarter of 2016 and in February 2017.

Tanker Retrofitted with Dual Fuel Engine

Caterpillar Marine informs it has begin a dual fuel engine retrofit conversion onboard the 472-foot Fure West tanker, owned by Furetank Rederi A/B. The MaK M 43 C diesel engine onboard the tanker will be retrofitted in hull to the seven-cylinder M 46 dual fuel platform, with each cylinder offering 900 kW of rated power. Additionally, Caterpillar is also supplying the complete gas system for the tanker, including bunker stations, two LNG tanks measuring 4.15 meters by 24 meters and the vaporizer.

Ground Breaking for Manufacturing Plant Held in South Korea

A ceremony for the ground breaking for a new manufacturing plant for Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines was held at the Yeongam, South Korea site. The project is a joint venture investment between Wärtsilä Corporation and Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd (HHI), and the new company will be known as Wärtsilä-Hyundai Engine Company Ltd. The joint venture was announced in January 2007. The new plant will be dedicated to producing Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines for LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) carriers. Demand in this market is expected to continue to grow in tandem with the increasing global demand for natural gas. Korea currently has a market share exceeding 70 percent of the LNG shipbuilding market.

Wärtsilä Dual-Fuel Solution for Icebreaking LNG Carriers

The Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) yard in South Korea has ordered a total of 54 Wärtsilä dual fuel engines to power 172,600 cbm icebreaking LNG carriers being built for use in arctic conditions to serve the Yamal LNG project in Northern Russia. The ships will be owned by one joint venture between Teekay LNG Partners of Canada and China LNG Shipping (CLNG), and another joint venture between China Shipping LNG Investment Co.,Ltd. (CSLNG) and Japan based Mitsui O.S.K.
