US Navy Launches Full Speed Ahead Training

The chief of Naval Personnel announced Jan. 30 new training for 2017 that expands on existing efforts to prevent destructive behaviors across the fleet. The training entitled, Full Speed Ahead, is designed to reinforce the Navy's core attributes and help build a strong foundation for professional and resilient Sailors. It follows Chart the Course and Bystander Intervention training that was conducted the past two years. "The goal of Full Speed Ahead is to continue the positive work we've done combating destructive behaviors while reinforcing our core attributes," said Rear Adm.

New Patrol Boats for Russia's Pacific Fleet

The keel for the boat (serial number 8002) was laid down and altogether the defense ministry has ordered three similar boats to be constructed by JSC Vostochnaya Verf with possible option to expand the series. Vostochnaya Verf became the second shipyard to build Grachonok-class special purpose boats. First boat of the project – P-104 (serial number 981) – was built by Zelenodolsk Shipyard for the Baltic Fleet in 2009. P-104 serves in harbor defense brigade of Leningrad Naval Base and is stationed in Kronshtadt. The boat has already proved herself as an effective counter-terror vessel.

NORAC Completes Tests

Seven cabin products delivered by NORAC have completed rigorous high-level shock and vibration testing. The company says that the shock and vibration tests were necessary to qualify its range of cabin products for the demanding naval market. “Shock and vibrating testing creates an environment that will show in a short period of time how products stand under adverse field conditions and through out years of change. Severnaya Verf Shipyard Floats Out Corvette 'Stoiky'

The launching ceremony of corvette Stoiky was held at JSC Severnaya Verf shipyard in St. Petersburg. The ceremony was attended by Baltic Fleet (BF) Deputy Commander Rear Admiral Sergei Farkov. Corvette Stoiky is the third multirole littoral zone ship built in series of Project 20380 (lead ship is corvette Stereguschiy). Such ships are designed for antiship/antisubmarine/antiaircraft warfare and gunfire support of landing operations. To lower radar signature, stealth technology was applied in the project design.

Moose Boats Delivers Patrol Vessel to Oakland Police

Moose Boats, a designer and builder of aluminum boats, has delivered a Moose M2-37 security and patrol vessel to the Oakland Police Department to provide expanded patrol duties at the Port of Oakland in addition to shallow draft response for Oakland’s waterfront. The procurement by City of Oakland was funded by  U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s 2010 Port Security Grant Program. The Canadian Lifeboat Institution (CLI) has taken delivery of a Tyne-class lifeboat from UK's RNLI and renamed the rescue vessel 'Fraser Lifeboat', informs the Chamber of Shipping of British Columbia. The Fraser Lifeboat originally entered service in 1987 as Famous Grouse for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). Horizon Shipbuilding Delivers Motor Vessel to Army Corps

Bayou La Batre, Alabama - Horizon Shipbuilding Inc. has delivered the M/V General Irwin, an inland river towboat, to the Army Corps of Engineers in Eufala, Alabama. The General Irwin is equipped with two steering rudders and four flanking rudders, and is powered by two Caterpillar diesel engines, providing 770 horsepower to her 48-inch propellers. MacGregor Hatch Covers for 10 Newbuild Bulkers

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has won an order from Sungdong Shipyard in South Korea for side rolling hatch covers for ten 180,000dwt bulk carriers with electrically-operated opening and closing system, MacRack. The ships are being built for the New York listed Scorpio Bulkers Inc. The majority of the ships will be delivered during 2015. Scorpio Bulkers Inc, had previously ordered other ships with MacGregor side rolling hatch covers with MacRack opening and closing system. MacRack uses variable frequency drive (VFD) technology, which allows for the optimized use of electric power.

Propulsion Troubles for Royal Caribbean Liner

Multiple sources reported that Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise vessel, has encountered difficulties with its propulsion system, impeding full speed capabilities. The ship is reported to be functional, but sailing at reduced speeds. Because of the propulsion issue, the 1,187-foot vessel and its passengers of the ship’s past two Eastern Caribbean sailings were forced to experience shorter port calls to compensate for longer sailing times. USA Today reported that Royal Caribbean is currently looking into the issue and searching for means to fix it.

Moose to Unveil New Boat

Moose Boats introduces the M2, an All-Aluminum Catamaran powered by twin 380 hp Cummins turbo diesels and propelled by twin Hamilton water jets. The M2 can attain a top speed of over 35 knots, cruise at almost 30 knots, and come to a full speed stop in two boat lengths. Its 21-in. draft will allow all of this to be done in less than three feet of water. It will be unveiled at the Seattle International Boat Show, January 13-24, 2005. The M2 evolved out of its Naval cousin, the 340C patrol boat, that Moose Boats has been building for the U.S. Navy.

Moose Awarded U.S. DOT Contract

Aluminum boat maker Moose Boats won a contract from the Department of Transportation, Maritime Administration (MARAD), for the construction of two Moose 340C Catamaran Patrol Boats. These patrol boats will be assigned to the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet located in Benicia, Calif. The Suisun Bay Fleet consists of dry cargo ships, tankers, military auxiliaries and other types of reserve ships in the custody of the Maritime Administration. The Moose 340C is a 37.5 ft., all-aluminum Jet Powered Catamaran with twin Cummins 380 hp turbo diesels and is propelled by Hamilton 292 water jets. This vessel can attain a top speed of over 34 knots, cruise at almost 30 knots, come to a full-speed stop in less than two boat lengths, according to the manufacturer. Its 21-in.

New Zero-emission Yacht Tender From Italy's Green Yachts

The new zero-emission tender is constructed in composite materials with wood structures & is powered by an electric outboard. The special propulsion system allows the tender to be easily stored in garages or on the swimming platforms of yachts. With its electric engine the tender can cruise for over 1 hour at cruising speed and 20 minutes at full speed with 3 person onboard. An additional powerpack will further increase the range of the tender. Easy access onboard comes thanks to an increased hull size making a stern underwater step.

Thrane & Thrane Starts Sailor 500

Thrane & Thrane started delivery of 200 Sailor 500 FleetBroadband terminals for implementation by partner, Polaris Electronics aboard the Maersk Line fleet. The roll-out follows shortly after A.P. Moller - Maersk signed a significant contract with Polaris Electronics for the supply of the terminals. Delivery completion is expected end October 2010. With the completion of this supply Thrane & Thrane has delivered a total of 370 Sailor 500 FleetBroadband to A.P. Moller - Maersk. Near Miss in New Zealand

The New Zealand Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) issued a report of the near grounding of the ferry ARATERE on September 29, 2004. The ferry was entering Tory Channel, a restricted waterway, when it failed to make a programmed course alteration while in automatic steering. The master intervened and made a manual alteration of course moments before the ferry would have grounded at full speed. The cause of the problem has not been definitely determined, but it appears that the automatic navigation and track steering system probably defaulted to autopilot mode because it received an erroneous signal from an external input…

P&O, Carnival Shares Begin Recovery

Shares in shipping operator Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co. moved to full speed ahead on Thursday, tracking a recovery course by U.S. cruise giant Carnival Corp., analysts said. P&O shares have underperformed the FTSE 100 index by as much as 38 percent on the year, but that pales to insignificance when placed alongside Carnival's share slump. The world's largest cruise operator is down 50 percent against the S&P 500 index on the year, having sunk to an 18-month low of $21-3/16 on March 17. The company set sail in 2000 valued at over $46. However, Carnival shares have rallied from the deep over the last three sessions to post an overnight close in New York of $24-3/16. P&O shares have charted a similar course.

BC Ferries Gets $68m for Sinking

BC Ferries reportedly received $67.9 million in insurance compensation for the sinking of the Queen of the North earlier this year, www.canada.com reported. The settlement was noted in the company's year-end financial details, in which net earnings increased $14.7 million, or 2.6 per cent, over last year to $49.9 million. The company said $6.6 million of the proceeds from the insurance settlement offset insurable losses, and the balance will be recognized in the first quarter of its 2007 fiscal year. The Queen of the North was traveling from Prince Rupert, B.C., to Port Hardy, B.C., when it rammed at full speed into Gil Island on March 22 and sank 400 m to the ocean's floor. Drifting Bulker Towed from Mid-Atlantic

Fairmount Marine said its tug, Fairmount Glacier, has safely delivered bulk carrier Cassiopeia Star in the port of Las Palmas, Canary Islands. The bulker was picked up during bad weather on the mid-Atlantic where she was drifting with main engine problems. Fairmount Marine, a marine contractor for ocean towage and heavy lift transportation, was contracted by Tsavliris Salvage to assist. After steaming at full speed for 1,720 miles the Fairmount Glacier met with the still drifting Cassiopeia Star.

Russian Shipyard Delivers Salvage/Rescue Vessel

The salvage vessel Spasatel Zaborschikov has been handed over by Nevsky Shipyard to the appropriate department of Russia's Transport Ministry after successful sea trials. The M/V Spasatel Zaborschikov (Rescuer Zaborschikov) is third in a series of multi-purpose 4MW salvage vessels of project MPSV07, under construction at the Nevsky dock. Yenisei River Helps Saves 4 Sailors

Dynagas infomred that their 155,000-cbm newbuilding Yenisei River, which was delivered in July, braved moderate to rough seas to go to the aid of the yacht Caprea which was taking in water. They picked up the four sailors after their yacht began flooding off western France. The ice-class ship, which had just left the Fos Cavaou LNG terminal with a re-export cargo, received distress calls from both the Caprea and the local coast guard at 1640 local time on Wednesday.
