Damen to Offer ERMA FIRST's Compact oneTANK BWTS

Dutch shipbuilding group Damen has signed its first contact with ballast water treatment systems (BWTS) manufacturer ERMA FIRST. The Greek manufacturer ERMA FIRST will supply its oneTANK, which is the world’s smallest BWTS, using chemical injection methods to clean ships’ ballast water.Damen Green Solutions has a broad selection of BWTS in its range, offering shipowners various capacities and techniques in treating their ballast water. With the addition of the ERMA FIRST oneTANK, Damen can provide clients with a solution that is not only small, but also modular.

Ballast water equipment maker Erma First expands its portfolio and brings "the world’s smallest" ballast water treatment system to the international market through its acquisition of US firm oneTANK LLC.oneTANK, a subsidiary of Glosten, developed a small scale innovative, low-cost, IMO Revised G8 Code and United States Coast Guard compliant system. Based on a patented mixing technology developed by the U.S. Geological Survey, the system can be installed in larger vessels’ aftpeak tanks. It is also suitable for use aboard workboats, tugboats, semi-submersibles, fishing vessels and superyachts.

Techcross ECS Obtains IMO BWMS CODE

The Korean government on Monday approved International Maritime Organization (IMO) Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) Code (New G8) for Techcross ECS. Ecochlor Receives IMO BWMS Code Type Approval

Ecochlor said it has received Type Approval from the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) for the IMO BWMS Code (MEPC.300(72) / revised 2016 G8) standards. The new certification applies to the entire range of Ecochlor ballast water management systems (BWMS), with flow rates of between 500 m3/hr. and 16,200 m3/hr., meaning that vessel owners may continue to install Ecochlor’s BWMS after the IMO BWMS Code October 28, 2020 deadline.Ecochlor's BWMS uses a two-step treatment process to treat ballast water; filtration and chlorine dioxide.

Ecochlor Hires Scheid as Europe Business Development Manager

Optimarin Completes IMO G8 and USCG Test Program

Norwegian-based ballast water treatment (BWT) systems manufacturer Optimarin informs it has completed testing of its Optimarin Ballast System (OBS) in accordance with the revised IMO G8 guidelines, while also upgrading its existing U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) approval certificates to ensure compliance for zero to two hours holding time.The testing procedures were conducted at the NIVA test facility in Norway from September 2019 to the end of June 2020, with DNV GL operating as the designated Independent Laboratory. Tests were conducted with two different filters simultaneously.

Evac Evolution BWMS Gets USCG Nod

Alfa Laval Wins USCG type Approval for Largest BWTS

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) presented a type approval certificate for the largest PureBallast 3 reactor size: 1500 m3/h, on 15 May.Customers can now select any PureBallast 3 system configuration for use in United States waters, said a press release.Launched in late 2018, the 1500 m3/h reactor for PureBallast 3 is optimized for 50% more flow than the former largest reactor size. Alfa Laval Completes Tests for USCG Type Approval

Swedish engineering group Alfa Laval has successfully completed additional tests at the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) to verify the biological efficacy of Alfa Laval PureBallast 3 without holding time.A press release from the company informed that as a result, PureBallast 3 is on target to be the first UV ballast water treatment system with zero holding time in its U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) type approval for all three water salinities. MERC to Cease BWMS Type Approval Testing

Maritime Environmental Resource Center will no longer conduct Type Approval Certification testing of ballast water management systems. The Maritime Environment Resource Center (MERC) was established in 2008 by the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) to facilitate the development and adoption of Green Ship and Green Port innovations with a primary goal of expanding on over twenty years of research addressing the issues of ballast water invasive species. MOL Rolls Out Total Residual Oxidants Instrument

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) announced commercialization of the Total Residual Oxidants (TRO) instrument "S.sensing WS," one of the major components of the Ballast Water Management System (BWMS). TRO is developed by Kurita Water Industries with the cooperation of MOL's group company MOL Engineering Co. In addition, MOL Techno-Trade will handle sales activities for the new product. BWMS are categorized as "UV type," "electrolysis type," "chemical type," and "ozone type." All except for the UV type sterilize harmful organisms in ballast water with various active substances. Therefore, accurately measuring the density of those active substances significantly impacts the effectiveness and treatment costs.

TMS Tankers Selects Coldharbour Marine BWTS

U.K.-based Coldharbour Marine, a manufacturer of ballast water treatment systems based on inert gas technology, has reached an agreement with Greece’s TMS Tankers to retrofit its GLD BWT System. TMS Tankers is a member of the Athens based TMS Group operating currently 43 tankers. The 2013-built 158,513DWT Suezmax tanker Bordeira, owned and operated by TMS Tankers, will be the first to be fitted with Coldharbour’s BWT System in early 2018 and will be used to carry out U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) type approval tests for Coldharbour, supervised by Lloyd’s Register. LR has Independent Laboratory Approval status with the USCG. The classification society has already overseen IMO type approval for the Coldharbour system, validated by the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

Alfa Laval PureBallast gets USCG Approval

On 23 December, Alfa Laval received U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) type approval for the third generation of its ballast water treatment system, PureBallast. The approval allows ship owners who deballast in United States waters to make a confident choice of treatment technology. The USCG based its type approval of PureBallast on CMFDA/FDA testing conducted at DHI in Denmark. This testing was performed using the same hardware, power consumption and flow as the already market-leading IMO-certified version of the PureBallast 3 family. Outside the United States, where PureBallast has been type approved using the MPN method, the USCG-certified system will operate in IMO mode and be able to treat water with UV transmittance as low as 42%.

What’s Next for Ballast Water Management?

Latest developments on the entry into force of the Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention took centre stage at the 8th International Conference on Ballast Water Management (24-25 April) in Singapore. International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Emeritus, Koji Sekimizu, and Chief Technical Advisor of the GEF-UNDP-IMO GloBallast Partnerships Programme, Jose Matheickal, delivered keynote addresses at the event. Among other key issues, participants discussed the revised guidelines for the approval of Ballast Water Management Systems (G8), challenges facing Port State Control with regards to Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement (CME) and the timeline for installation of BWM systems.
