NATO's Stoltenberg, EU's von der Leyen Travel to North Sea Platform

The heads of NATO and the European Commission flew on Friday to a North Sea platform bigger than the Eiffel Tower in a visit underlining Norway's importance for gas supplies since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.The Troll A platform extracts gas from Norway's biggest gas field. Romania Defuses Drifting Mine off Black Sea Coast

Romania's military carried out late on Sunday a controlled explosion of a naval mine that had drifted close to the country's Black Sea shore, the defense ministry said.Mines began floating in the Black Sea after Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, and Romanian, Bulgarian and Turkish military diving teams have been defusing those drifting in their waters.Russia and Ukraine accuse each other of planting them.The Black Sea is crucial for shipment of grain, oil and oil products. DNV Grants AiP for Odfjell Oceanwind's Floating Wind Foundation Designed for up to 15MW Turbines

Classification society and assurance provider DNV has awarded Odfjell Oceanwind an Approval in Principle (AiP) for its new Deepsea Semi floating wind foundation design. The Deepsea Semi floating wind foundation design has been developed for use in floating wind farms and for off-grid applications including temporary electrification of oil and gas installations in harsh environments.The Deepsea Semi foundation is dimensioned for up to 15MW wind turbine generators and has been developed for low-cost, industrial mass-production.

Offshore Vessel Hits Platform at South Pars Field, Off Iran

An offshore vessel has this week allided with an offshore gas platform in Iran's South Pars gas field, according to Pars Oil and Gas Company.The incident happened Wednesday when the vessel hit the SPD12B gas platform in the Persian Gulf.A photo shared by POGC shows a vessel could be a fast crew supplier-type. The company didn't share vessel details.According to POGC, there were no casualties and the deck of the platform was unaffected by the incident.POGC said the cause of the accident was under investigation, and that gas production from the platform continued uninterrupted.

Offshore Oil Rig Infection Exposes Coronavirus Dangers

Equinor reported the oil industry's first coronavirus infection on an offshore installation on Wednesday, highlighting the challenge in preventing contamination for thousands of workers living in the close quarters on rigs and platforms.A worker was in isolation on the Norwegian energy firm's Martin Linge oil and gas platform off Norway where production is due to start at the end of this year, the company said. It said it would cut activity at the field, but personnel would remain at installations, while workers would reduce meetings and sit further apart in canteens to prevent further contamination. It has 776 people working on the project spread across three installations, Martin Linge, the Maersk Intrepid drilling rig and the Floatel Endurance accommodation rig.

Decommissioning in Shetland Expands

Two installations from Spirit Energy’s ST-1 in the North Sea have arrived at the Dales Voe decommissioning facility in Shetland, Scotland, with works set to be carried out by partners Veolia and Peterson.The 45-metre high 1,300 tonne steel jacket and 1,200 tonne topsides structure arrived into Dales Voe in Lerwick.The structures will be dismantled and disposed of by partners Veolia and Peterson. Acta Marine has held a naming ceremony for its latest walk-to-work construction support vessel Acta Centaurus in Den Helder, the Netherlands.Mrs. Marianne van Oord named the vessel Acta Centaurus. Centaurus being one of the stellar constellations in the northern hemisphere. The ceremony took place in Den Helder with many guests attending the festivities and the tours on board the brand new vessel.Mrs. Van Oord wished Acta Centaurus and her crew and charterers crew safe sailings in supporting the growth of offshore renewable energy.After taking delivery from Ulstein Verft, Norway end April 2019 Acta Centaurus had her maiden voyage to Den Helder.

Bangladesh Shelves LNG Projects as Others Ramp Up

Bangladesh has put aside two smaller liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects with trading houses Gunvor and Vitol to focus on two larger LNG import terminals, one of which is already in use while the second will start up in March.Bangladesh has turned to LNG to offset falling domestic gas output to feed industrial demand and electricity generation in a nation of 160 million people where a third have no power supply.It aims to import 17 million tonnes a year of LNG by 2025, which in today's terms would make it a top five importer.

OIG Group Sells MV Blue Giant

Bremen-based shipping company Harren & Partner announced the acquisition of the offshore construction vessel, MV Blue Giant for an undisclosed price from the English operator, OIG Group. Inpex to Ship First Ichthys LNG Cargo by End of September

Inpex said it expects to ship first cargo from its Ichthys liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Australia by the end of September after safety issues have been resolved, maintaining an earlier schedule.Australian regulators had discovered safety issuess on the Ichthys offshore gas platform and was considering enforcement action.The Inpex-operated Ichthys LNG project carried out an inspection mainly on electrical equipment during the process of final safety verifications in cooperation with Australian regulators, in preparation for the start-up of production.

Tim Bush Promoted to Crowley VP, Deputy General Counsel

Crowley Maritime Corp. has announced that Tim Bush has been promoted to vice president and deputy general counsel. In his new position, Bush will help support the company’s growth as a provider of solutions for the U.S. government and various public-sector agencies. He will be based in Houston and report to Michael Roberts, senior vice president and general counsel. “Tim is an outstanding lawyer, and adds a great deal of value to the Crowley team,” Roberts said. Gulf Marine Eyes Acquisitions

Gulf Marine Services (GMS), the leading provider of advanced self-propelled self-elevating support vessels (SESVs) serving the offshore oil, gas and renewable energy sectors, is looking at acquisitions due to opportunities in the market, reported Gulf News. GMS, which supports the oil and gas and renewable energy sectors with barges, has a fleet of fourteen vessels that help in offshore oil and gas platform refurbishment and maintenance activities, offshore wind turbine maintenance work, as well as offshore oil and gas platform installation and decommissioning, among other things. Air New Zealand Wins Deal to Service US Navy Engines

Air New Zealand said its Gas Turbines business unit has been awarded four contracts from the U.S. Navy worth up to $42 million to service its fleet’s gas turbine engines. The contracts will see the Auckland based Gas Turbines team carry out maintenance and overhaul work of the General Electric LM2500 gas turbines that power much of the U.S. Navy fleet for the next few years. Air New Zealand Chief Operations Officer Bruce Parton said the contracts are an important win for the airline, and the company participated in aa competitive bidding process to secure the work. Air New Zealand Gas Turbines is a business unit of Air New Zealand, providing gas turbine overhaul and repair services to clients across a range of industries.

Effective May 1, Lasse Petterson has assumed the role of chief executive officer (CEO), a provider of dredging, environmental and remediation services. In his over 35-year career, Petterson has gained extensive experience in the engineering, construction and maritime industries. His international experience includes time working and living in Norway, Asia and the U.K. to oversee operations and major projects in Australia, Middle East and South America. Most recently, Petterson served as a private consultant to clients in the oil and gas sector. Petterson served as chief operating officer (COO) and executive vice president at Chicago Bridge and Iron (CB&I) from 2009 to 2013. Prior to CB&I, Petterson was CEO of Gearbulk, Ltd.

Lift Boat Crew Rescued in US Gulf

Four crewmembers aboard the lift boat Superior Trust were rescued after the vessel became unstable near Southwest Pass, La., Wednesday. U.S. Coast Guard Sector New Orleans watchstanders received a call early Wednesday morning reporting one of the Superior Trust’s legs failed and made contact with a natural gas platform’s walkway resulting in approximately 10 gallons of oil discharge. Coast Guard Station Venice launched a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium boatcrew that arrived on scene and transported the Superior Trust crew back to shore. There were no reported injuries. Coast Guard Cutter Brant crewmembers later arrived on scene to monitor the lift boat, and Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH-65 aircrew conducted an over flight.

Petterson Named Great Lakes CEO

The Board of Directors of Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation, provider of dredging, environmental and remediation services, announced the selection of Lasse Petterson as CEO, as well as his appointment to the company’s board of directors. Petterson will join the Board immediately and assume the role of chief executive officer once his application for U.S. citizenship, as required by the Jones Act, is finalized, which is expected in Q1 2017. DONG Postpones Major Oil Project Offshore Denmark

DONG Energy <IPO-DONG.CO> has terminated a contract to build an oil and gas platform for its Hejre field, postponing indefinitely the major development offshore Denmark, the Danish majority state-owned utility said on Tuesday. DONG said the supplier consortium, Technip France and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, had not been able to meet its commitments under the contract. DONG, which operates the field and holds a 60 percent stake, and Germany's Bayerngas, which has the remaining 40 percent, will assess alternatives to develop the field and will work closely with the Danish authorities, DONG said. SAL Remains in Troubled Waters

The running year turned out as a tough year in shipping. Despite a raft of technical projects for the company, the stinging tale of the low oil price created a steep downturn in the global offshore industry as well as leaving many projects deferred or cancelled. As a result SAL concludes 2015 with significant project references, but also with the marks of the general challenges in the shipping industry. SAL foresees a continued challenged mar-ket in 2016 and predicts project carriers will have to toughen up to be capable of withstanding the fights that will inevitably come. COO of SAL, Toshi Yamazaki, gives his view on 2015 and the outlooks for the industry in the year to come. 2015 turned out to be a tough year for many ship owners and companies involved in the shipping industry.
