Bibby Offshore Clinches BP Contract

Bibby Offshore, a leading subsea services provider to the oil and gas industry, has been awarded a multimillion pound contract by BP to replace subsea infrastructure in the Central North Sea. The work is part of the $1billion Eastern Trough Area Project (ETAP) Life Extension Project announced by BP in the summer. ETAP is one of the largest and most complex developments in the North Sea, comprising nine oil and gas reservoirs, six of which are operated by BP. The ETAP Life Extension Project (ELXP) will help secure the future of the fields until 2030 and beyond. The Bibby Offshore ELXP contract involves installing new subsea control system infrastructure to safeguard power and communication links to ETAP’s Machar, Madoes and Mirren fields, some 150 miles East of Aberdeen.

Largest Underwater CO2 Release from Pipeline - DNV GL

Carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) is gaining momentum to meet stringent climate change goals and secure energy supplies for the future. To fully understand the environmental and safety implications associated with the development of CO2 pipelines, DNV GL is conducting the oil and gas industry’s largest ever controlled release of carbon dioxide from an underwater pipeline at its full-scale Spadeadam Testing and Research Centre, located in Cumbria, UK. The planned underwater release, scheduled to start in January, is part of an international Joint Industry Project (JIP) ‘Sub-C-O2’ to develop safety guidelines on the use of offshore CO2 pipelines.

Fossil Fuel Recovery to Benefit from New Technology

New York - Considerable investment is being ploughed into oil and gas enhanced production services in the hope of increasing production efficiency in a market in which global hydrocarbon consumption is only expected to increase, according to market intelligence experts GBI Research. The new report shows that the application of enhanced production techniques, such as the artificial lift technique in upstream production processes, and sand control services, will considerably improve the percentage recovery of oil and gas from onshore and offshore reservoirs. Artificial lift services picked up the pace in 2011 as a result of increasing oil and gas demand, which brought about the need to enhance production above levels achieved from naturally flowing reservoirs.

Outlook for Floating Production Systems

By James R. International Maritime Associates, Inc. Floating production has evolved to a mature technology that opens for development oil and gas reservoirs that would be otherwise impossible or uneconomic to tap. The technology enables production far beyond the depth constraints of fixed platforms, generally considered to be 1,400 ft. (426.7 m), and provides a flexible solution for developing short-lived fields with marginal reserves and fields in remote locations where installation of a fixed facility would be difficult. Floating production systems vary greatly in appearance - from ship-shape FPSO vessels to multi hull production semis to cylindrical shaped production spars.

More Oil Rigs Leaving GoM

According to The Post Gazette, jack-up and deep-water rigs are leaving the Gulf of Mexico for more lucrative jobs elsewhere. This is expected to accelerate production declines in the Gulf, putting upward pressure on domestic energy prices. The rig exodus is squeezing what was an already tight market for drilling equipment. In 2001, about 148 rigs were in the Gulf. Now, about 90 remain, and more are expected to leave soon. The rig migration will have the most pronounced effect on natural-gas production and prices because most of the rigs leaving the Gulf are jack-ups used to find gas in shallower waters. Gulf gas reservoirs are often quickly exhausted, so energy companies must keep punching new wells to maintain production. Why has the rig count dropped so sharply?
