Korean Register (KR) has awarded an Approval in Principle (AIP) to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) for a new type of tank shape designed for various liquefied gases and fuels. The announcement was made during Nor-Shipping 2023 in Oslo, Norway. The new tank shape, developed by HD HHI, is designed to improve safety and productivity.The new tank shape aims to address the challenge of sloshing that impacts the transportation of liquefied gases, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG). Sloshing refers to the wave-like movement of liquid inside a tank during sea transport.

Høglund, the marine solutions and system integration company, has been awarded a contract to deliver biogas-ready fuel-gas supply systems (FGSS) for six Hurtigruten passenger ship retrofits.Høglund will work together with HB Hunte Engineering to design and engineer fully customized tank and FGSS solutions for each of the six vessels, optimized to run on both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied biogas (LBG), according to a press release.Hurtigruten will use Høglund and HB Hunte’s FGSS solutions in tandem with large battery packs onboard its vessels, replacing its older engines which run on marine gas oil, it said.Hurtigruten, a player in the Arctic and Antarctic expedition cruise segment…

Harvey Gulf International Marine (HGIM) announced it has received both ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) class functional approval and USCG (United States Coast Guard) design bases approval on a 4,000 cubic meter LNG articulating tug barge (ATB) construction drawing package; the design accounts for ship-to-ship transfer and shore side resupply transfers. Sea trials aboard Greenland, the world’s first LNG-fuelled short-sea dry bulk vessel, have validated the performance of Thordon Bearings COMPAC propeller shaft solution, indicating that seawater-lubricated bearing systems are applicable to all ship types and are definitely here to stay. "Erik Thun has truly raised the standard in sustainable shipping with this vessel, pushing the boundaries of environmental possibilities to a completely new level," said Tommy Holmgren, Sales Director with the Duwel Group, Thordon Bearings’ distributor in Sweden.

A Jensen Maritime-designed, liquefied natural gas (LNG)-bunkering articulated tug-barge (ATB) has been granted approval in principle (AIP) by classification society American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). The designation establishes that Jensen’s vessel concept, which is classed as an A1 Liquefied Gas Tank Barge, is compliant in principle with ABS rules and guides. Suited for mobile bunkering, Jensen’s ATB is also oceans rated, meaning that it is not limited to the intracoastal waterways.

Late last year, an innovative project to design and build the world’s first LNG fuelled escort tugs became a reality when the Borgøy was handed over for sea trials by builder Sanmar in Tulza Bay near Istanbul. While the advent of gas as power in the marine market is growing increasinly common, most every installation is actually "dual fuel", meaning the vessel is able to use LNG or traditional diesel fuel to power the boat. This weekend in Turkey, however, marked a significant turning point perhaps in the adoption of LNG as fuel in commercial marine vessels, as Rolls-Royce reports that Sanmar Shipyard’s completed a world first: a purely gas powered tug. Leading international classification society Bureau Veritas has given approval in principle for the basic design of a 14,000 teu containership to be powered by LNG. Damen has been tasked with developing the first environmentally friendly ferry design for the Dutch shipping company Rederij Doeksen. Based in Harlingen, Rederij Doeksen operates passenger and car ferries between Harlingen and the Dutch Wadden islands of Vlieland and Terschelling. This will be the first time Gorinchem-based Damen has specifically designed a ferry aiming at a sustainable solution and this is the first ferry of this type for Doeksen. Henk Grunstra, Damen Product Director, said: “This project is particularly interesting because we have to look at the existing ferries, the specifics of the waterways in the Wadden Sea which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the passenger, car, cycle capacity and the peaks and troughs in demand.

MAN Diesel & Turbo has reached agreement with TGE Marine Gas Engineering, specialist in the design and construction of cargo-handling systems for cryogenic gases, regarding their future cooperation. In particular, the agreement centers on MAN Diesel & Turbo’s medium-speed, dual-fuel engines and the mutual benefits arising from a collaboration with TGE’s gas systems to offer optimum customer solutions for gas-fuelled ships. With the imminent arrival of the strict IMO NOx and SOx emission regulations, gas has potential as a solution to marine fuel requirements.

STX Europe has been awarded a contract with Solstad Rederi AS to build an innovative LNG-powered Platform Supply Vessel (PSV). The vessel is of STX Europe PSV 12 LNG design. The vessel is scheduled for delivery in Q4 2011. The value of the contract is approximately $67.5m. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Executive Branch has plenary authority to conduct suspicionless inspections at the border. In the instant case, Customs officials removed and disassembled the gas tank from a car entering the United States from Mexico at a land border crossing. Marijuana was found in the gas tank and criminal charges were brought against the driver. Defendant argued that the evidence should be suppressed because the search was highly intrusive and was not based on reasonable suspicion that he was committing an offense. The Court held that the Government’s interest in preventing entry of unwanted persons and effects is at its zenith at the international border. There is a lesser expectation of privacy at the border than in the interior.

On July 1, 2003 the Coast Guard published in the Federal Register the long anticipated regulations concerning maritime port and vessel security. This is a major rulemaking printed in seven separate individual rulemakings. These rulemakings concern compliance with provisions of the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 (MTSA) and implementation of the International Maritime Organization's (IMO's) International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. The regulations incorporate the ISPS Code into the domestic maritime trade. The ISPS Code applies to all port facilities and vessels (MODUs, cargo & passenger vessels subject to SOLAS) in international trade. Any vessel not on the above list must still comply with the new security provisions of 33 CFR Parts 101 and 103.
