GE Delivers First Gas Turbine Module for USS Santa Barbara

GE Marine announced it has delivered its first new lightweight LM2500 composite gas turbine module to Mobile, Ala. shipbuilder Austal USA for the future USS Santa Barbara (LCS 32).GE is supplying 38 LM2500 gas turbines to Austal USA for LCS Independence variants up to LCS 38. Like all the Austal USA-built LCS, the future USS Santa Barbara will be powered by two GE LM2500 gas turbines arranged in a combined diesel and gas turbine configuration with two diesel engines.This new module, which was fully certified by the U.S.

GE Marine’s LM2500 gas turbines now power the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) USS CINCINNATI (LCS 20), which was commissioned into the United States Navy’s fleet on October 5 in Gulfport, Mississippi. “GE’s skilled and diverse workforce built the LM2500 marine gas turbines used to power this sophisticated surface combatant at GE Aviation’s manufacturing facility in Evendale, Ohio, a few minutes-drive from downtown Cincinnati,” said GE’s Kris Shepherd, Vice President, General Manager, Marine Operations.

Italian Navy Launches Offshore Patrol Ship

GE Marine's LM2500+G4 gas turbine will  power the Italian Navy’s new Paolo Thaon di Revel Pattugliatore Polivalente d’Altura (PPA) a hybrid-electric, multipurpose offshore patrol ship that was launched in mid-June and will be delivered in 2021.Being built at Fincantieri Shipyard in Muggiano – La Spezia, Italy, the PPA patrol ship will serve multiple functions from patrol with sea rescue capacity to civil protection operations. It is 133 meters long and can carry 90 crew members with additional accommodations for up to 171 members.

GE to Supply Equipment for Indian Navy’s Frigate

GE Marine will provide gas turbine auxiliary equipment for the LM2500 engines that will power the Indian Navy’s new P17A frigates. New GE LM2500 Module for US Navy Frigates

GE’s Marine Solutions announced it has completed the acoustic attenuation and weight comparison testing between its new lightweight composite LM2500 gas turbine module and the steel enclosure. The results verified a 2,500-kilogram weight reduction and a significant improvement in noise attenuation—60 percent quieter—when compared to its steel predecessor. “The tests compared the noise and weight of the steel enclosure to the novel one piece composite design. Results verified that the new carbon fiber provides a significant reduction in the wall weight and noise, which is vital on weight- and size-constrained surface combatants,” said GE’s Brien Bolsinger, Vice President, General Manager, Evendale, Ohio.

Emissions Regulations Present Strategic Opportunity

The marine industry as a whole is responsible for about 2.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Shipbuilders and fleet owners have spent the last two decades adjusting to shifting emissions regulations since the introduction of the MARPOL Convention 1997 Protocol, which included specific regulations for the reduction of air pollution from marine vessels. Since then, there have been additions and amendments to ensure that the industry is doing its bit to better support the environment, with the latest regulation pulling forward lower caps in global emissions.

Partners to Boost Australian Navy Fleet Performance

GE and CSIRO’s Data61, Australia's data innovation network, have developed a data analytics solution that will give the Royal Australian Navy greater insights into their fleet engine performance and enhance operational efficiency. GE supplies the Royal Australian Navy with its LM2500 gas turbines that power the Anzac, Adelaide, Canberra and Hobart class vessels. GE Powers Maersk’s Mega Ships

GE’s Marine Solutions recently delivered its power take off/power take in (PTO/PTI) solution along with its Power Management System digital software solution onboard four of the largest container vessels owned by Maersk Line—Madrid Maersk, Munich Maersk, Moscow Maersk and Milan Maersk. Madrid Maersk is the first container vessel delivered from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME)—back in April—and Munich Maersk and Moscow Maersk have both completed successful sea trials. RJE to Build GE Gas Turbine Modules for Australian Navy Frigates

GE’s Marine Solutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with RJE Global, Morphettville, South Australia, whereby RJE will assemble GE LM2500 gas turbine modules and manufacture a number of components for this engine in support of the Royal Australian Navy’s new SEA 5000 frigate program. The MOU was signed by both companies recently at RJE’s facility in Adelaide. The nine-ship SEA 5000 Future Frigate Program will replace the aging Anzac class frigates. GE’s LM2500 gas turbines are operational on two of the short-listed qualified ship designs -- Fincantieri’s FREMM and Navantia’s F100.
