Webb Searches for New President as Keith Michel Plans Retirement

After nine years president of Webb Institute, R. Keith Michel announced plans to retire effective June 30, 2022, and the search is on for his successor at this top-ranked undergraduate institution specializing in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Founded in 1889 by New York-based shipbuilder William H. On Saturday June 18, Webb Institute awarded 19 Bachelor of Science degrees at its 120th Commencement Ceremony. Each graduating student received a dual degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Keith Michel Installed as President of Webb Institute

Retired Chairman of the Board of the Herbert Engineering Group of Companies and Webb Institute alumnus, R. Keith Michel (Webb ’73) was inaugurated as the 15th president of Webb Institutein a private ceremony set on campus. Mr. Michel's inuauguration followed the retirement of RADM Robert C. Olsen, Jr. USCG (Ret.), who filled the role for eight years. “Keith is highly regarded throughout the marine industry and will be an asset to Webb Institute,” said outgoing President Olsen. Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. George Campbell Jr., conducted the presidential inauguration.

Michel Named 15th President of Webb Institute

Dr. George Campbell Jr. R. Keith Michel, Chairman of the Board of the Herbert Engineering Group of Companies, has been appointed President of Webb Institute, the country’s foremost school of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, effective July 1, 2013. The appointment was made following the recently announced retirement of RADM Robert C. Olsen, Jr. USCG (Ret.), who will have filled this role for eight years. “Keith was a natural choice for us. His professional business experience will help open doors for our students as well as for fundraising,” stated John Russell, Chair of the Search Committee. “Keith is highly regarded throughout the marine industry and will be an asset to Webb Institute,” added outgoing President Olsen. PPG Coatings Earns George Campbell Award

PPG Industries’ (NYSE: PPG) protective and marine coatings (PMC) business has been selected as a recipient of The Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) George Campbell Award for 2009-2010. PPG PMC earned the recognition for the performance of its Amerlock 2/400 coating at the Deer Island Water Treatment Facility in Boston Harbor. The product, a fast-setting, high-solid epoxy coating, was applied to a gravity thickener at the plant, which is the second largest water treatment facility in the United States. The George Campbell Award is given for outstanding achievement in the completion of a difficult or complex industrial commercial coatings project.

Feature: Series Design in the New Regs Environment

For a half century, GTR Campbell has offered a turnkey ship creation service, applying a unique project-oriented philosophy that turns conflict of interest into mutual interest. New regulations may have changed a design's lifespan but not the series concept. Today, Antony Prince is internationally recognized as the President of GTR Campbell Marine Consultants and successor to the legacy of the company founder, famed naval architect George Campbell. But 10 years ago, Prince was just a man with a plan and some mighty big shoes to fill. Prince had been George Campbell's close friend and associate for over 20 years. In 1990, the aging Campbell turned the company over to his protégé, cautioning that, for a consultancy, reputation was not easily transferred from one man to another.

Standards for A New Era

One of the most respected names in the development of vessel designs suited to volume demand and series production, and still widely identified with the 'Liberty' ship replacement era, GTR Campbell Marine Consultants has fostered new links with the industry in China. The recent opening of new headquarters for the Canadian firm and its associated company Algoship Designers in Nassau, Bahamas, was accompanied by a first deal for the latest addition to its standard ship portfolio, a 700-dwt inter-island ferry. While the bulk carrier bloodline is perpetuated in a host of new projects involving Chinese and South Korean yards, the extension of the GTR Campbell concept to the ferry domain involves a combined passenger and cargo carrier dubbed the Fiesta type.
