Nordic Cold Storage Blasts into Savannah

Workers finish construction of the racks that will hold frozen poultry inside the new Nordic facility in Pooler.

Nordic Cold Storage announced the grand opening of the first phase of its storage and blast facility, located just minutes from the Port of Savannah. The site has over 200,000 square-feet of convertible temperature-controlled storage space and is capable of blasting more than 10 million pounds of product, ranging from fresh poultry to produce, per week. This $30 million facility currently employs 150 workers, but Nordic plans to start a second phase by the end of the year, which will mirror the existing infrastructure. The cold storage warehouse began receiving its first shipments this month.

Georgia Port Gets New Cranes

Two super post-panamax cranes, arrived today at the Port of Savannah. They are reportedly the largest cranes to operate in the state of Georgia, and represent an $11.6 million investment in operations improvements by the Georgia Ports Authority.

Maersk Line, Georgia Port Authority Sign Agreement

Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) on July 13 announced the signing of a major new agreement between Maersk Line and the GPA. The recent opening of Phase One of Savannah’s newest container berth, CB8, the ongoing increases to container storage areas and other equipment additions are part of the Port of Savannah’s 10 year, $700m improvement plan to boost container capacity. The 20-year agreement between Maersk Line and the GPA includes a 10-year renewal option. Georgia’s deepwater ports and inland barge terminals support more than 275,968 jobs throughout the state annually and contribute $10.8b in income, $35.4b in revenue and some $1.4b in state and local taxes to Georgia’s economy.

Georgia’s Ports Support State’s Economy

Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) Executive Director Curtis J. Foltz announced the results of a study that confirms Georgia’s deepwater ports continue to be one of the state’s strongest economic engines, fostering the development of virtually every industry. “I am pleased to report that the Ports of Savannah and Brunswick have maintained and created jobs for Georgia, despite the recent economic downturn,” GPA’s Executive Director Curtis J. Foltz. The study entitled, “The Economic Impact of Georgia’s Deepwater Ports on Georgia’s Economy in FY2009” reveals, that even during one of the worst recessions since the Great Depression, Georgia’s ports sustained jobs and increased its economic impact for the state.

Double-Digit Gains for Georgia Ports Authority

According to Doug J. Marchand, Executive Director of the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA), the ports started off the new fiscal year with double-digit gains in both container growth and the movement of auto and machinery units. 127,471 TEUs (20-ft. Equivalent Units) were handled through the Port of Savannah during July 2003, the first month of GPA's 2004 fiscal year. The additional cargo represents a 16.4 percent increase over this time last year. Georgia Ports Authority Completes TWIC Enrollment

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) has completed the initial employee enrollment process for the Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) program. The federally mandated TWIC requirement created by the Department of Homeland Security is a common identification credential for individuals requiring unescorted access to secure or restricted areas of seaports. The Transportation Security Agency (TSA) opened the TWIC Enrollment Center in Savannah, Ga. in November 2007. Since November, the GPA has enrolled all of its employees in Savannah and Brunswick. “The cooperation of all port users is required to ensure the program’s successful implementation in Georgia,” said GPA’s Executive Director Doug J. Marchand.

GPA Executive Director to Step Down

Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) executive director Curtis J. Foltz will step down at the end of the fiscal year, June 30, the port authority’s board of directors announced today. GPA Sets Tonnage Record

The Georgia Ports Authority moved more than 3 million twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEUs) in fiscal year 2014. Exports accounted for just over half of containerized tonnage.

The Georgia Ports Authority moved more than 29 million tons of cargo, 3 million twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEUs) and more than 700,000 auto and machinery units in Fiscal Year 2014. “The board and staff of the Georgia Ports Authority are to be commended for their outstanding achievements this year,” said Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal. “Our ports’ success is a win for us all, and a direct result of Georgia’s commitment to the GPA and support for critical port infrastructure projects such as the harbor deepening and enhanced access to I-95 and I-16.

TMEIC Receives Order from Georgia Ports Authority

TMEIC has received an order to supply MAXSPEED electrical drive systems upgrade for three Ship-to-Shore Crane at Georgia Ports Authority. The project will be to replace the original DC drives with TMEIC’s TMdrive 10e2 drives and controls. TMEIC will be supplying new AC hoist motors with higher HP that will enable GPA to increase container moves by two containers per hour. “The Georgia Ports Authority continually strives to provide our customers with the most efficient container handling equipment available,” said Chris Novack, GPA Director of Engineering and Facilities Maintenance.

GPA Grows Market Share and Container Capacity

Doug Marchand, Executive Director of the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA), announced at a meeting of the Board of the Directors today that the Port of Savannah had attained another month of impressive container growth. "GPA is simultaneously gaining market share while growing container capacity," said Marchand. GPA's April results show that 129,040 TEUs were moved through the Port of Savannah, a 36.6 percent increase, or 34,569 more TEUs than April of last year. Records also show that for the first ten months of Fiscal Year 2003 (July-April), 1,259,518 TEUs were moved through the Port of Savannah, a 33.5 percent increase, or 316,177 more TEUs than at this time last year.

GPA Achieves Records in Total Tonnage, Autos

At the Georgia Ports Authority board meeting Monday, Executive Director Curtis Foltz reported that the GPA achieved record volumes and added additional customer accounts in October. "Strong growth, new customer accounts and additional harbor deepening funding announced this month are all positive signs that Georgia's ports are moving in the right direction," said Foltz. Georgia ports moved a record 2.54 million tons of cargo during October – a 22% increase over the same month a year ago. The Colonel’s Island Terminal at the Port of Brunswick and Savannah’s Ocean Terminal combined to move a record 62,343 units of automobiles and heavy machinery in October, for an increase of 10,045 or 19.2% over October 2012.

$50m More for $650m Port Deepening Project

Gov. Nathan Deal has announced that as part of his FY2014 budget proposal, he will seek an additional $50 million in funding for the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project at the Georgia Ports Authority Board meeting. “I am committed to allocating funds and time to this pivotal link in our logistics network,”said Deal. “Expanding the Savannah Harbor is vital to our renewed economic growth and plays an integral role in helping make our state the No. If approved, the proposal will increase state funding for the deepening project to $231.1 million. “Studies indicate that the port deepening will reduce shipping costs by at least $213 million a year,” said Georgia Ports Authority Board Chairman Robert Jepson. Overall, the cost of the project is anticipated to be $652 million.

Georgia Port Records All-time Tonnage Highs

The Georgia Ports Authority marked record volumes for fiscal year 2013 in total tonnage, bulk cargo, total auto-machinery units, and freight moved by intermodal rail. “Our deepwater ports provide vital support to our agricultural, forestry and manufacturing sectors,” said Georgia Governor Nathan Deal. “Because American-made goods are able to reach the global market efficiently through Georgia’s ports, these products are more competitive in international trade. GPA Executive Director Curtis Foltz said record levels achieved across important business sectors in fiscal year 2013 are a testament to the superior service enjoyed by the customers of the GPA.

Georgia Ports Authority Goes Electric

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA), is in the process of converting all of its ship-to-shore cranes to electricity. The $4.7 million conversion project will be complete by the end of calendar year 2003. The conversion, which is already 50 percent complete, will reduce environmental emissions from the high sulfur diesel fuel by 415,658 lbs / yr. The GPA will also be reducing the possibility of environmental hazards due to diesel and coolant spills. Additional benefits of electrification will come in the form of safety and cost-savings. Conversion of the ship-to-shore cranes involves removing the existing diesel engine and installing a new medium-voltage transformer that converts the 13,800-volt feed down to 480 volts.

The Georgia Ports Authority achieved outstanding January results, with double-digit growth across all business sectors and a 26 percent increase in total tonnage. "The Port of Savannah is unrivaled in its connectivity into the heartland of the U.S. and the service excellence that port customers enjoy," said GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch. Lynch credited those supply chain efficiencies for the record 3 million tons of cargo GPA moved in January, up 623,504 tons compared to the same month a year ago.

GPA Marks 14.2% Growth in Containers

The Georgia Ports Authority marked strong and sustained growth across all major markets in the month of February, including bulk, breakbulk, autos and machinery, and containerized freight. "The additional cargo attracted to Georgia speaks to the reliability and ease of doing business in this state," said GPA Executive Director Curtis Foltz. In containerized trade, the Port of Savannah achieved a 14.2 percent improvement in February, for an increase of 35,287 twenty-foot equivalent container units. The Georgia Ports Authority unveils four electrified rubber-tired gantry cranes (ERTG), claiming to be the first to introduce this type of crane in N. America. “This transition to electrified RTGs is an important milestone for the GPA and our industry,” said GPA Executive Director Curtis Foltz. The new ERTG system was developed with the help of partners Konecranes, Conductix-Wampfler and Georgia Power, which provided the cranes, the new power system and the electrical infrastructure, respectively.

GPA Recognized for Environmental Efforts

The Georgia Ports Authority won recognition by the Environmental Protection Agency as a leader in reducing carbon emissions. The Southeast Diesel Collaborative (SEDC), a public-private partnership formed by the U.S. EPA Region 4 office, named the GPA as a Community Leadership Award winner. “The GPA has voluntarily undertaken many projects to decrease diesel fuel consumption, resulting in improved air quality,” said GPA Executive Director Curtis Foltz. In December 2012, the Georgia Ports Authority unveiled its first four electrified rubber-tired gantry cranes.

Panama Canal Hosts Georgia Governor

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) welcomed Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue (pictured left) to the Panama Canal September 24. Joined by senior leaders from the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) and the Georgia Department for Economic Development, Governor Perdue visited the Canal to learn about the historic expansion of the waterway and the anticipated benefits the project will bring to Georgia. Funding Approved for Georgia’s New Inland Terminal

At its July board meeting, the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) approved a spending package of $19.7 million to construct the Appalachian Regional Port in Chatsworth, Murray County, Ga. The funds consist of $10 million from the state of Georgia and $9.7 million from the GPA. In addition, CSX is making off-site improvements to facilitate the new inland port. Murray County purchased the land at a cost of $700,000 and deeded the site to GPA. For the land purchase, $500,000 came from a state economic development grant and $200,000 from the Murray County Economic Development Authority. "We would like to thank our Board of Directors, Governor Deal, the state of Georgia, Murray County and CSX Transportation for making this incredible partnership possible," said Executive Director Griff Lynch.

Marchand in Int’l Maritime Hall of Fame

The International Maritime Hall of Fame announced recently the Georgia Ports Authority’s (GPA) Executive Director Doug J. Marchand will be honored as one of its newest members on May 13, 2009, at the United Nations in New York City. The International Maritime Hall of Fame was founded in 1993 and recognizes maritime visionaries, who, through excellence in their company, organization, or services, best exemplify the qualities of futuristic thinking that will guide the maritime industry in the 21st Century. “By creating unique opportunities and success at the Ports of Savannah and Brunswick, Doug has set the standard in the port industry and developed a model others attempt to duplicate,” said GPA’s Chairman of the Board Steve Green. Marchand has served as GPA’s Executive Director since 1995.

GPA Records Strong November Gains

The Georgia Ports Authority achieved significant business gains in November, with a 6.6% increase in twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEUs) for the month, and a 7.3% increase in total tonnage across all terminals. The GPA moved 243,233 TEUs in November and reached 2,414,630 in total tonnage for the month.
