MSC Executive Director Maurizio Aponte Leaves

Maurizio Aponte, executive director for Europe of the group Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC)  is stepping down.He will be taking up new responsibilities within the MSC family, effective 1 May 2019, said a press note.  Maurizio is a relative of Gianluigi Aponte, founder and executive chairman of the Helvetic shipowning group.Maurizio has for decades been one of the key pillars in the development of MSC and his immense contribution is widely appreciated.Moving forward, he has decided to oversee a family maritime business based in Italy."MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company wishes Maurizio good fortune in all his future endeavours and projects," said a press note.

Bahamas Pushes Martitime Activities

Bahamas' Prime Minister Christie has met with Global Shipping Giant Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), in Geneva. Principal and founder of MSC, Gianluigi Aponte and his senior management team met with Prime Minister at MSCs headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland for two days of deliberations. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss about matters relating to the expiring concessions under the Hawksbill Creek Agreement and growth of MSCs investments in The Bahamas. Meanwhile, Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization, H.E. Eldred Bethel and Executive Director of The Bahamas Maritime Authority London, Cmdr. Davy Rolle presented Bahamas’ contribution to Secretary General Kitack Limon Tuesday, February 16th at IMO Headquarters.

MSC Silvia Joins Fleet

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company today took delivery of the MSC Silvia, the latest of a brand new class of 9,400 TEU container ships from the leading ocean carrier. Following today’s inauguration ceremony in Shanghai, MSC Silvia will join the Empire service between the Far East and US East Coast ports. Built at the Hudong shipyard, in China, the new ship sails under the Panama flag. As a family-owned group with a strong culture of maritime traditions, MSC’s new container vessels usually bear the names of relatives of MSC Group founder and Executive Chairman, Gianluigi Aponte, or those of the wives, mothers or daughters of MSC employees. Today’s christening of MSC Silvia honours the wife of Achille Staiano, a former MSC liner who is today Head of Commercial Services at MSC Cruises.

MSC Acquires Second Boxship

MSC Oliver was inaugurated at the DSME shipyard in Busan, South Korea, just two months after the delivery of MSC OSCAR. This week, it was the turn of Oscar’s cousin, Oliver, to break the traditional bottle of champagne against the ship, in the presence of his father Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of  MSC Cruises, representing both the Aponte family and MSC Group. MSC Oliver is the second of a total of twenty mega-vessels which are scheduled for delivery by the end of the year. Traditionally, MSC container ships are named after female relatives of company employees. To date, there are just five exceptions: MSC Aniello, MSC Don Giovanni, MSC Diego, MSC Oscar and now, MSC Oliver.

Diego Aponte is New President & CEO of MSC

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company SA announces the appointment of Mr. Diego Aponte as President and CEO. "It is important that we keep looking forward and that we prepare the company for the future," said Mr. Gianluigi Aponte, founder of MSC. "The Board and I firmly believe that Diego, supported by his senior management, will deliver continued success for MSC and its customers. We already have a number of projects underway which will help improve our overall service offering to clients, whilst improving our efficiencies. It is an exciting time for MSC. Since joining MSC in 1997, Diego has worked in various functions across the business including Line Management where he managed all aspects of the trade.

MSC Cruises Order Two 154,000 gt Cruise Ships

MSC Cruises informs it has signed a contract with Fincantieri for the construction of two new cruise ships with an option for one more. The two ships will join MSC Cruises' 12 strong cruise ship fleet. The contract was signed at the Palazzo Chigi in Rome between MSC Cruises and Fincantieri in the presence of MSC Cruises Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago and CEO Gianni Onorato, and Fincantieri CEO Giuseppe Bono. The new prototype will be named "Seaside" and will be the largest cruise ship ever built by Fincantieri. Its innovative features will make it unique, say MSC, in the shipbuilding industry. The two ships will lead the way for a new generation of cruise ships that will be completely different from an architectural point of view.

MSC Preziosa: The Ultimate in Cruise Ship Tech

MSC Cruises recently added a new state-of-the-art liner, the MSC Preziosa, helping the Italian company, truly a family business, attain the status of third largest cruise line in the world. MSC Preziosa is a Fantasia class cruise ship owned and operated by MSC Cruises. It entered service in March 2013 as an enhanced version of its sister ships, MSC Splendida and MSC Fantasia, and is identical to MSC Divina, which was launched in 2012. Built at the STX shipyard in St. Nazaire, France, MSC Preziosa is the new flagship of MSC Cruises. The new ship gained immediate recognition famous courtesy of its christening by actress Sophia Loren, and was significant as it signified that MSC Cruises is now the third largest cruise line in the world.
