Maritime Cook Islands Highlights “Positive Progress” to Tokyo MOU White List
The Cook Islands flag, operated by ship registry Maritime Cook Islands (MCI), has shown positive flag state performance, as reported in the latest report on Port State Control in the Asia Pacific Region by Tokyo MOU. The data and figures were published in the new report on Port State Control in the Asia Pacific by Tokyo MOU. The Tokyo MOU is “one of the most active regional port State control (PSC) organisations in the world” and consists of 20 member authorities in the Asia-Pacific region. In the recently published report, Cook Islands reported a decrease in the number of inspections with deficiencies; from 27 in 2016 to 20 in 2017. Number of deficiencies has also seen a significant decrease from 181 in 2016 to 116 in 2017.
Maritime Cook Islands Gears Up for Stronger 2018
Maritime Cook Islands (MCI), an international ship registry, is planning for another year of expansion after a solid performance in 2017. Despite the continuing challenging times in shipping, MCI says 2017 saw it make significant progress on several fronts. For 2017, MCI registered 130 new vessels. Our fleet grew by 3.6%; from 557 vessels at the end of 2016 to 577 (as of 13 December 2017). With 451,792 gross tonnage (GT) added for 2017, this brings the total GT for 2017 to 1,840,614 (as of 16 December 2017). This represents an increase of 3.76% from 2016’s total GT. In February 2017, MCI significantly enhanced its technical department and relocated it to Italy , in the process making a series of senior appointments.
Maritime Cook Islands makes two appointments for Europe

Maritime Cook Islands Technical Department Reconstituted
Maritime Cook Islands (“MCI”), the international ship registry, hassignificantly enhanced its technical department with a series of senior appointments. The new department now has a much stronger presence in the key European market following the appointments of Paolo Favilli, Rachele Andreani, Brendan Smith and Andrea Emanuele Pippa. Brendan Smith is based in Rarotonga, Cook Islands,home of the flag while his three colleagues are based in Europe. The reconstituted department, consisting of experienced professionals with industry-relevant technical expertise, aims to further solidify MCI’s presence in Europe, and to improve service standards to MCI’s clients in the region.
CCS is Authorized RO for Maritime Cook Islands
Maritime Cook Islands (MCI) has authorized the China Classification Society (CCS) as a Recognized Organization (RO), to conduct survey and certification of ships flying the Cook Islands flag. The formal agreement between MCI and CCS which is a full member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), will significantly open up opportunities for the Cook Islands Flag in China and will benefit shipowners in the region. Maritime Cook Islands Appoints Hastings, Technical Manager
Maritime Cook Islands (“MCI”), the leading ship registry, has just appointed William Hasting as a Technical Manager serving the European region, and in so doing significantly boosting MCI’s presence in Europe. Steady Growth Recorded by MCI for 2015
Ship registry Maritime Cook Islands (MCI) registered an 11 percent growth in the fleet last year with 201 new vessels, up from 184 in 2014. The fleet grew from 473 vessels in 2014 to 525 vessels at the end of December. In tonnage added terms in 2015, this is equal to 318,245 gross tons or a 21 percent increase. MCI'latest figures show that 149 Vessels were de-registered in 2015 and these were mainly yachts coming to the end of a three or five year registration. It also included 20 SOLAS cargo vessels some of which were sold and changed flag but most of which went to scrap.

Cook Islands to Issue Wreck Removal Certificates
The Cook Islands has acceded to the Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks, 2007 (“The Nairobi Convention”). As a State Party, Cook Islands will issue Wreck Removal Certificates to its own ships and also to ships flying the flags of states that have not yet become party to the Nairobi Convention. The Nairobi Convention, which will come into force on 14 April 2015, requires all ships over 300 GT (including fishing vessels and commercial yachts) to have insurance in place to cover the location, marking and removal of a wreck; deemed to be a hazard in a State party’s Convention area.
