Orbcomm Wins Two U.S. Gov't Agency Contracts for Ship Tracking Services

Orbcomm Inc., a global provider of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, has been awarded a multi-year contract by a U.S. government agency for a competitive renewal of its global Automatic Identification System (AIS) data services used for ship tracking and other maritime navigational and safety efforts. In addition, Orbcomm was awarded a separate competitive contract to deliver AIS services to multiple other U.S. government users.Orbcomm's AIS data will continue to be used in a maritime domain awareness software platform that supports key U.S.

MarineTraffic Boards Equasis

MarineTraffic, the world’s most trusted AIS vessel tracking service has started supplying geographical positioning data to the Equasis project, a European Commission initiative started in 2000 to make ship safety information more widely available. The Equasis project makes information including a vessel’s age, ownership, management, flag, classification society, P&I club and recent geographical positions available via an online database that is freely accessible worldwide to registered users. It helps promote the exchange of unbiased information and transparency in maritime transport, closely aligning it to MarineTraffic’s own company values and aims.

Global AIS: Genscape Spots Alaskan Crude Export VLCC

No Alaskan crude oil has been exported outside of the United States since 2004. Genscape Vesseltracker monitoring data showed that a cargo of Alaskan North Slope crude was loaded Sept. 26 at the Alaskan port of Valdez for delivery into the South Korean refining center of Yeosu, says a Genscape blog post. The U.S.-flagged tanker, Polar Discovery, is reported to have sailed from the ANS export terminal at Valdez, Alaska, for east Asia. Yeosu is home to a GS Caltex-operated 775,000 bpd refinery, the world’s fourth largest. The Polar Discovery is expected to arrive at Yeosu on October 10, according to Vesseltracker. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, no Alaskan crude oil has been exported outside of the United States since 2004.

Global Availability of Fleet Management Software Platform

Vessel tracking and asset/document management software, used by hundreds of U.S. commercial workboat and fishing customers,  is now available internationally for integration into existing partner applications. McMurdo Group, a company in end-to-end search and rescue (SAR) and maritime domain awareness (MDA) solutions, has announced that its fleet management software platform is now available worldwide for partners to integrate into their existing maritime applications and solutions. The McMurdo Group software platform, the most widely used vessel tracking and fleet management software in the U.S. commercial maritime market, will be demonstrated at the V-Tracks Vessel Tracking and Monitoring Conference in London (Radisson Blu Portman Hotel) February 27-28.

Boat Beacon App, for smartphones & tablets now on Android following its success on iPhone; improves safety at sea for boaters. Mariners can now use their Android devices to keep a watch on nearby boats along busy coastlines while enabling other boatsto follow their current location using Boat Beacon Maps and Global Marine AIS systems. The Boat Beacon app, developed by a skipper for other skippers, does not require an external AIS receiver or transponder equipment and provides location tracking at a fraction of the cost of an AIS system.
