New ABS Guide for LNG Bunkering

New Guide provides standards for growing LNG bunkering vessel sector. ABS, a provider of classification and technical services to the marine and offshore industries, has published the ABS Guide for LNG Bunkering. This new Guide provides standards for the design, construction and survey of LNG bunkering systems that are on board a vessel. “This industry-leading Guide incorporates our expertise in the safety aspects of LNG storage and handling as well as LNG as fuel,” says ABS Chairman, President and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki. As LNG as fuel becomes more widely adopted in the marine industry, the infrastructure will continue to expand. BC Ferries’ Spirit of British Columbia Converted to LNG

Spirit of British Columbia, one of two BC Ferries vessels that will use liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel, has finished conversion at the Remontowa Ship Repair Yard S.A. in Gdansk, Poland and has returned to service for the Canadian operator.The 1993-built ro-pax ferry Spirit of British Columbia was the first to undergo conversion while its sister vessel, the Spirit of Vancouver Island, is expected to complete conversion during the spring of 2019. Milestone marks another ‘first’ in the Class Society’s history of serving the gas market. Cheniere Energy, Inc. has commissioned a cargo from the Sabine Pass LNG Terminal. Carried aboard the Asia Vision, an ABS-classed LNG Carrier, the cargo represents a milestone in ABS’s history of serving the gas industry, the classification society said. “The first export shipment of liquefied natural gas from Sabine Pass is a historic moment for the entire North American energy sector,” said ABS Chairman, President and CEO Christopher J. ABS Published FSRU Development Guidance

ABS has published the ABS Guide for Building and Classing LNG Regasification Vessels, outlining guidance for classing LNG regasification vessels. “ABS has developed this industry-leading guidance based on extensive experience with the classification of LNG carriers,” says ABS Chairman, President and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki. Floating LNG regasification uses specialized ships, commonly referred to as LNG regasification vessels or Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRU), which offer a flexible and efficient way to deliver LNG to new and expanding markets. This Guide covers both purpose-built LNG regasification vessels and existing LNG carriers that are converted to operate with regasification plants onboard.

ABS Concept Approval Advances LNG as Fuel

ABS has granted a Certificate of General Design Approval (GDA) for an IMO Type B LNG fuel tank design developed by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) of South Korea. HHI’s fuel tank design was conceptualized and developed to minimize the loss of cargo space and effectively use available area on board the vessel. ABS signed an agreement with Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co. (DSME) to support safety and apply class guidance to a conceptual Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) unit. “We are pleased to sign this agreement and work with DSME to support new innovations and technology advancements in the offshore industry,” says ABS Executive Vice President of Global Offshore Ken Richardson. “As gas continues to play an increasingly important role in the global energy mix and industry looks to develop new resources, ABS remains committed to its mission of advancing safety,” Ken added.

ABS Issues LNG Bunkering Advisory

Report explores the benefits and challenges of natural gas power from the perspective of fuel providers and operators. Classification society ABS published a new Advisory about LNG Bunkering in response to the industry's growing interest in gas propulsion, LNG Bunkering: Technical and Operational Advisory, exploring the benefits, challenges and solutions associated with fuelling vessels equipped with LNG power systems. The report is available to the public through the ABS website, www.eagle.org. "Ship owners, operators, designers and shipyards around the world are considering the advantages that operating on natural gas may provide," said Roy Bleiberg, ABS' Director of Global Gas Solutions.

ABS Approval for Chiyoda's Floating LNG Power Plant

“As the energy mix shifts and global demand for gas increases, concepts like this will reshape how energy is supplied,” said ABS Vice President for Global Gas Solutions, Patrick Janssens. This concept offers a new approach to delivering new sources of power to remote areas of the world. The conceptual design is based on existing LNG carriers which are converted into floating power plants with small (~72 MW) to medium (~400 MW) scale power generation capabilities. In reviewing Chiyoda’s floating LNG power plant concept, ABS said it applied its relevant Rules and Guides to confirm that the conceptual design meets the intent of applicable class requirements.

ABS Approves New MOSS-type LNG Tank Concept

ABS informs it has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) for a new MOSS-type liquefied natural gas (LNG) tank design concept developed by Japan’s Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI). Designated as an IMO Type B independent tank, the concept takes a new approach by applying a non-spherical tank design to increase the use of space on board an LNG carrier. According to KHI, the non-spherical design concept allows Panamax-size LNG carriers to expand their total carrying capacity to 180,000m³, a 25,000m³ volume increase when compared to using spherical tanks. In issuing its AIP, ABS reviewed the strength and fatigue analysis to support KHI in demonstrating the feasibility of the new concept.

US-built Liquefied Gas Barge Delivered

Harvest, an ABS-classed articulated tug barge (ATB) purpose-built to transport liquefied anhydrous ammonia, has been delivered to a subsidiary of Savage Companies by U.S. shipbuilder Vigor. Harvest is the first complex liquefied ammonia transport barge built in the U.S. since 1982. “The delivery of this ATB represents a landmark achievement for all of the project stakeholders as well as the U.S. shipbuilding industry,” said ABS Americas Division President Jamie Smith. “The first-of-its-kind in over three decades, the Harvest will help reshape the U.S. fleet and support safer trading in U.S.

LNG-Fueled Vessels Go Big with 'Project Forward'

ABS, a provider of classification services to the global marine and offshore industries, has teamed up with partners Arista Shipping, Deltamarin, GTT and Wärtsilä in the “Project Forward” joint development project (JDP) to develop a dry bulk carrier concept that employs LNG as fuel. The goal is to develop a Kamsarmax bulk carrier design to be the first of this type suitable for worldwide services powered by LNG in compliance with the International Maritime Organization’s Energy Efficiency Design Index 2025 standards, NOx Tier III and Marpol Annex VI SOx emission levels.

ABS Classes World’s Largest LNG Powered Ethane Carrier

ABS, a provider of classification and technical services to the global marine and offshore industries,has confirmed that the ABS-classed Navigator Aurora, the world’s largest ethane/ethylene capable liquefied gas carrier, has been delivered to Navigator Gas by Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai, China. The Navigator Aurora is the first of four Navigator Gas ethane/ethylene midsize vessels to be delivered with ABS Class during 2016 and early 2017. It has a cargo carrying capacity in excess of 37,000 cbm and is fitted with dual fuel engines that enable the ship to operate on either diesel fuel or LNG, making it capable of meeting the most stringent current and future air emissions requirements.

ABS has been selected to class two Liquefied Natural Gas Carriers (LNGCs) for SK Shipping, featuring the KC-1 cargo containment system (CCS). The agreement brings to five the number of LNGCs to be built to joint ABS/KR class for Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS), the world's largest LNG importer.
