ABS Updates Guidance on LNG Bunkering
ABS has updated its guidance on LNG Bunkering in North America to support the transport sector's increasingly rapid transition to the use of cleaner fuels. The second edition of ABS' Bunkering of Liquefied Natural Gas-fueled Marine Vessels in North America was released today, offering new market-leading advice to shipowners and operators who may be looking to develop bunkering infrastructure in response to new emissions regulations and showcase their environmental stewardship.
Emissions Regulations Present Strategic Opportunity
The marine industry as a whole is responsible for about 2.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Shipbuilders and fleet owners have spent the last two decades adjusting to shifting emissions regulations since the introduction of the MARPOL Convention 1997 Protocol, which included specific regulations for the reduction of air pollution from marine vessels. Since then, there have been additions and amendments to ensure that the industry is doing its bit to better support the environment, with the latest regulation pulling forward lower caps in global emissions.
ABS Issues LNG Bunkering Advisory
Report explores the benefits and challenges of natural gas power from the perspective of fuel providers and operators. Classification society ABS published a new Advisory about LNG Bunkering in response to the industry's growing interest in gas propulsion, LNG Bunkering: Technical and Operational Advisory, exploring the benefits, challenges and solutions associated with fuelling vessels equipped with LNG power systems. The report is available to the public through the ABS website, www.eagle.org. "Ship owners, operators, designers and shipyards around the world are considering the advantages that operating on natural gas may provide," said Roy Bleiberg, ABS' Director of Global Gas Solutions.
ABS to Class the First Very Large Ethane Carrier
ABS, a provider of classification services to the maritime and offshore industries, has been chosen to class the world's first contracted series of very large ethane carriers (VLECs). The class contract for the ships, which will be built in Korea by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for an Asian shipowner, represents another gas ship milestone for ABS. "We are delighted to have received the class contract for the world's first large ethane carriers," says ABS Vice President of Global Gas Solutions Patrick Janssens. "As a result of the shale gas boom in the US, ethane is developing as an exciting new market with great potential, requiring the development of new ship types. The contract is for six 87,000 m3 VLECs and available options.

ABS to Class Innovative Moss-type LNG Carriers

ABS Approves New MOSS-type LNG Tank Concept
ABS informs it has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) for a new MOSS-type liquefied natural gas (LNG) tank design concept developed by Japan’s Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI). Designated as an IMO Type B independent tank, the concept takes a new approach by applying a non-spherical tank design to increase the use of space on board an LNG carrier. According to KHI, the non-spherical design concept allows Panamax-size LNG carriers to expand their total carrying capacity to 180,000m³, a 25,000m³ volume increase when compared to using spherical tanks. In issuing its AIP, ABS reviewed the strength and fatigue analysis to support KHI in demonstrating the feasibility of the new concept.
ABS to Class LNG-fueled Nordic Hamburg Containerships
Leading provider of classification services to the maritime and offshore industries, ABB, says it has been chosen to class two LNG-fueled containerships to be built in China for German owner GNS Shipping/Nordic Hamburg. The 1,400 teu vessels will feature dual-fuel propulsion enabling them to burn LNG and conventional bunker fuel. They will be built at Yangzhou Guoyu Shipbuilding Co. Ltd, for GNS Shipping/Nordic Hamburg for long-term charter to Containerships Ltd Oy, of Finland.
ABS Classes World’s Largest LNG Powered Ethane Carrier
ABS, a provider of classification and technical services to the global marine and offshore industries,has confirmed that the ABS-classed Navigator Aurora, the world’s largest ethane/ethylene capable liquefied gas carrier, has been delivered to Navigator Gas by Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai, China. The Navigator Aurora is the first of four Navigator Gas ethane/ethylene midsize vessels to be delivered with ABS Class during 2016 and early 2017. It has a cargo carrying capacity in excess of 37,000 cbm and is fitted with dual fuel engines that enable the ship to operate on either diesel fuel or LNG, making it capable of meeting the most stringent current and future air emissions requirements.

ABS, DSME Pact on Novel FLNG Concept

ABS-classed Ship Carries Historic LNG Export from US

Wärtsilä, GTT Partner on LNG Solutions
Wärtsilä and GTT finalized a cooperation agreement at the Marintec conference and exhibition in Shanghai, China on December 5. The aim of the cooperation is to explore potential business opportunities in the marine sector in relation to liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage, fuel gas supply systems and associated services that will benefit both shipyards and vessel owners. Wärtsilä has experience and in-house expertise in LNG fuel gas applications, as well as gas carrier process know-how, while GTT has capabilities in developing cryogenic membrane containment solutions.

ABS to Class the World's First CNG Ship
ABS announced it has been chosen to class the world's first compressed natural gas (CNG) carrier ordered by Pelayaran Bahtera Adhiguna, a subsidiary of Indonesia's state-owned power company Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PT PLN).
