Lomar Promotes Georgiou to CEO

Nicholas Georgiou has been promoted to Chief Executive Officer of ship owning and management business Lomar, its parent company the Libra Group announced. ABS Partners with Leading Greek Shipowners to Address EU MRV Regulations

ABS, a leading provider of classification services to the global marine and offshore industries, has completed a project with a group of leading Greek shipowners to support preparations for implementing the European Union’s Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) regulation for CO2 emissions. The result of this initiative is a clear interpretation of the regulation that allows companies to understand how they will be affected and what steps have to be taken to achieve and demonstrate compliance. “The EU MRV Regulation establishes a regional regime that requires owners to put in place systems and practices that provide clear and precise evidence of compliance,” says Dr. Kirsi Tikka, ABS Executive Vice President, Global Marine.

Dry Bulk Shippers to Coordinate Chartering

Five dry bulk shipping firms, including shipping tycoon John Fredriksen's Golden Ocean will form a new venture to coordinate chartering services, hoping to reduce costs in a fragmented market, the firms said in a joint statement. The firms, including Golden Ocean, Bocimar International, CTM, Golden Union Shipping and Star Bulk Carriers will form Capesize Chartering Ltd., aiming to start up operations by the second half of February. "The parties operate in the highly competitive and fragmented capesize industry, and neither party owns, controls or manages sufficient capesize vessels to provide competitively priced bids and efficient trading and operations to serve its customers," the firms said.

Clarkson Hellas understand that Golden Union have declared options for three further 81,200 DWT Kamsarmax at AVIC Weihai Shipyard for deliveries throughout 2016 and 2017 to add to their existing two units currently under construction. LNG-fuelled bulk carrier design developed by COSCO Shipyard Group, Golden Union & Lloyd’s Register moves industry along. Lloyd’s Register has provided approval in principle (AIP) for the new ‘Clean Sky’ bulk carrier design incorporating an LNG-as-fuel system. COSCO, Golden Union and Lloyd’s Register started the project in June 2011 to investigate the potential to develop a commercially viable bulk carrier design based on an existing COSCO conventional design, but employing gas powered propulsion systems.
