A ship transporting almost 200 tons of food to Gaza left a port in Cyprus early on Tuesday in a pilot project to open a new sea route for aid to a population on the brink of famine.The charity ship Open Arms sailed out of Larnaca port in Cyprus, towing a barge containing flour, rice and protein.The 200-mile (320 km) voyage across the eastern Mediterranean to Gaza with a heavy tow barge could take up to 2 days, Cypriot officials have said.The mission, funded mostly by the United Arab Emirates, is organised by U.S.

Victaulic appointed Rick Bucher as Chief Executive Officer, succeeding John F. Malloy, effective January 31, 2021. As New Jersey steps up efforts to eliminate fossil fuels over the next three decades, the state is more than doubling its target for offshore-wind energy production under an executive order signed by Gov. Phil Murphy.The order would increase the goal to 7,500 megawatts by 2035, from 3,500 set for 2030.Murphy made the announcement with former Vice President Al Gore, a clean energy advocate, at a news conference in Jersey City at Liberty Science Center.The Executive Order will deliver the clean, renewable energy generation needed to meet the State’s goals of 50 percent renewable energy by 2030 and a 100 percent clean energy economy by 2050…

The Royal Australian Navy’s replenishment capability is operating at capacity once again with HMAS Sirius back in the brine after four months of maintenance at Captain Cook Graving Dock, Garden Island. The fleet tanker cut an impressive figure against the city skyline as she sailed out of Sydney Harbour and into the Pacific Ocean for sea trials recently. She will return to Sydney briefly to take on bulk fuel at Gore Cove before commencing her transit home to Rockingham, Western Australia. It will be the first time a Navy tanker has ‘bunkered’ fuel at Gore Cove since HMAS Westralia did so in 1993. The crew of 73 are looking forward to the upcoming increase in pace. “We are excited about getting Sirius back to sea to do our job”, said Ship’s Warrant Officer Dale Young.

Despite high hopes for Arctic business from mining to shipping as the ice melts rapidly and temperatures rise twice as fast as the global average, few firms say the sums still make sense. An oil price slump and cheaper commodities, including iron ore, together with tensions between the West and Russia over Ukraine, are adding new disincentives. Examples of extra outlay abound. Ice-breaking tankers able to carry gas from Siberia cost $100 million, or 50 percent, more than normal vessels and hundreds of millions of dollars are needed to upgrade railways serving Arctic ports. Added to that, for many companies, winter darkness, ice and vast distances mean that Arctic investments are a non-starter.

A Port Tariff increase will come into effect for New South Wales ports covering Sydney (Gore Bay, Port Botany and Kurnell) from August 1, 2014, GAC reported in its daily Hot Port News report. Sydney Ports has determined that an increase in Statutory Charges of 9.64% is required for all commercial ships and related cargo arriving in the port to help cover navigation services, pilotage and site occupation for non-passenger vessels. Sydney Ports has informed that it will amend the Statutory Port Charges. A 9.64% increase in Statutory Charges for Navigation Services, Pilotage and Site Occupation for Non-Passenger Vessels will come into effect for all commercial ships and related cargo arriving at Sydney ports (Gore Bay, Port Botany and Kurnell) from 1 July 2014. Kosnac Floating Derrick Corp. of Staten Island, NY took delivery of the 2,700 hp June K, the company's first twin-screw tug and its first new build after three generations of Kosnac family management. "We took everything we learned from 75 years of using other peoples' boats in New York waters," said Capt. The 78 x 26 x 10.5-ft. tug, with twin CAT 3512B diesels and a 9-ft. draft, was built by A&B Shipyard, Amelia, La. It is the first of three in Kosnac's current building program. Intended principally for ship handling and assist work, barge towing and dredge assist, the June K's draft is shallow enough to navigate the many creeks and estuaries throughout the Port of New York region.

Bush's pick of Dick Cheney, former CEO of Halliburton Company, as his vice presidential running mate. American energy firms could get a break from environmental regulations and policies imposed under the Clinton-Gore administration that industry representatives claim have discouraged domestic oil production and left the United States vulnerable to foreign suppliers like OPEC. Bush's prior experience as an independent oil operator had already won him industry favor, and that popularity is likely to grow with Cheney, who headed the world's largest oil field service company, now joining the ticket.

During an "All-Hands" celebration held at the Coast Guard Yard on Oct. 2, four members of the Maryland Congressional Delegation and the Coast Guard's Assistant Commandant for Systems presented three prestigious awards to the shipyard's work force. Employees of the yard, its tenants commands and invited guests numbered nearly 900 and enjoyed the mid-morning festivities on the parade grounds of the 101 year old shipyard in Baltimore, Md. The White House is asking the U.S. Navy to pay the six-figure utility bill for Vice President Dick Cheney's house, as Democrats accused Cheney, the administration's point man on energy policy, of "staggering insensitivity." The bill for electricity, gas and water for the 33-room official vice presidential residence at the U.S. Naval Observatory is projected at $136,000 for fiscal 2002 which ends in September, compared with a budget of $43,600, the White House said. The USCG's comprehensive approach to designing and obtaining its next fleet of ships, aircraft and communications systems was recognized in a letter from Secretary of Transportation Rodney E. Slater to Vice-President Al Gore. The Deepwater Capability Replacement Project was formally designated a Reinvention Laboratory under the National Partnership for Reinventing Government in the Secretary's letter. U.S. Transportation Secretary Rodney E. Slater, leading a trade mission in support of President Clinton's commitment to a well-integrated Western Hemisphere transportation system, joined with Brazilian Transport Minister Eliseu Lemos Padilha in signing a major three-year maritime agreement ensuring each country's shipping lines will be treated equally when carrying cargo from the other country. California's governor, attorney general and the California Coastal Commission filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Interior Department to allow the state a say in the fate of oil drilling leases off the state's coast. California Coastal Commission Chair Sara Wan said the state was denied its mandatory right to review the leases for environmental issues. "It doesn't mean we would necessarily seek a ban on offshore drilling," Wan said. "The commission is saying (the leases) could have serious impacts on coastal resources and the state needs the right to look at the leases. The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Oakland, Calif., the state attorney general's office said.

Thousands of ILA members from the Port of New York and New Jersey attended a public hearing called by the USACE in Fort Monmouth, N.J. to demonstrate support for dredging projects which they say are needed to protect their jobs and the port's future. ILA Locals throughout the port say members are outraged the USACE has reopened the public comment period on a dredging permit which has already been issued to Brooklyn Marine Terminal. They say such an action jeopardizes the Port of New York and New Jersey to continue to take clean, uncontaminated dredged material to the ocean. They further state objections to this and other dredging projects runs counter to the 1996 agreement negotiated by Vice-President Al Gore with the maritime industry, labor and environmental groups.
