Gladding-Hearn Refitting Ferry for Government of Bermuda

The Government of Bermuda’s Marine and Port Services has chosen Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, to undertake a major refit of the 700-passenger ferry Bermudian. Built in 1988, the 118’ steel vessel completed the 635-mile crossing of the North Atlantic, arriving at the Somerset, Mass. shipyard, this week. Resolute, one of two high-speed passenger catamarans delivered by Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, to the Government of Bermuda, Ministry on Transport in 2002, has returned to service after a compete refit. Video: Ill Tanker Crewmember Medevaced off Bermuda

An ailing crewmember was medevaced from an oil tanker off the coast of Bermuda on Friday.Rescue Coordination Center Bermuda notified watchstanders at the U.S. Coast Guard’s Fifth District command center in Portsmouth of an ill crewmember aboard the Malta-flagged tanker Antonis last Wednesday at approximately 1 p.m.The Coast Guard coordinated the rendezvous of two nearby commercial vessels to deliver needed medical supplies through the Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue…

Gladding-Hearn Lands Bermuda Ferry Contract

Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding has begun construction of two new fast ferries for the government of Bermuda, Ministry of Transport. The first vessel will be delivered in September 2001, followed by a second in early 2002. The Somerset-Mass., shipyard was chosen from among 12 yards from four countries - Australia, Norway, Denmark, and the U.S. - competing for the project. Designed by Incat Designs, Sidney, Australia, the 250-passenger ferries will be part of a new "seamless" transportation system involving integrated docks for bow loading and electronic tickets that will be compatible with the government's bus system, said government officials. Each all-aluminum vessel measures 84 ft. long, 30 ft. beam, and draws 5.3 ft.

WHTI Land and Sea Notice of Proposed Rulemaking Published

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the U.S. Department of State (DOS) announced today the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) for the land and sea portion of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), a core 9/11 Commission recommendation. Proposed rules require a passport or other secure document denoting citizenship and identity for all land and sea travel into the United States. As the first rational step as we move towards full WHTI implementation, DHS intends to end the routine practice of accepting oral declarations alone at land and sea ports of entry. On Jan. 31, 2008, U.S. and Canadian citizens will need to present either a WHTI-compliant document or a government-issued photo ID…
