To better serve its government customers, such as the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) and Naval Sea Systems Command, Crowley Maritime Corp. has moved its Washington, D.C., office to 100 M Street - adjacent to MARAD and the Navy Yard in the southeastern quadrant of the nation’s capital. This new location puts Crowley closer to its clients in the District of Columbia while maintaining close proximity to Congressional offices. It enables more networking with potential teaming partners, a distinction that’s important when pursuing large, complex government opportunities.

Divers Comb Capsized China Ship, Hopes Fade

Death toll more than doubles to 19, more than 400 missing. Rescuers searched a sunken cruise ship in the Yangtze River on Wednesday for more than 400 missing people, many of them elderly, but hopes of finding more survivors were fading in what could be China's worst shipping disaster in almost 70 years. State television showed rescuers, some standing gingerly on the upturned hull of the Eastern Star, and scores of divers working through the night. Only 14 people, including the ship's captain, have been found alive since the ship capsized in a freak tornado on Monday night with 456 people on board. Just 19 bodies have been recovered. Rescuers have not slackened off, even though about 200 divers face difficulties such as cabin doors blocked by tables and beds.

Port Battle Underscores Possible Libya Break-Up

Armed factions deploying heavy weapons. Peace talks making little progress. Hidden behind a pile of sand, a tank points its gun towards Libya's biggest oil port on the other side of an invisible frontier that now divides the north African nation. Factions fighting for control of Libya and its oil wealth have moved columns of heavy weapons to this new front line running through the middle of the country, escalating a conflict that Western powers fear may lead to a national break-up four years after the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi. In an attempt to prevent Libya from sliding into all-out civil war, the United Nations hopes in the coming days to resume peace negotiations between the warring parties…

London’s River Safeguarded

The future of the Thames as a working river has taken a major step forward with the Government giving the go ahead to the Mayor of London’s plans to protect wharves. This means the wharves recommended by the Mayor and the Port of London Authority (PLA) for protection are now legally safeguarded for cargo-handling use. The Mayor and the PLA submitted a detailed assessment of wharves in London and their future potential for handling cargo earlier this year. Central to this is use of the ‘safeguarding’ policy, which protects key riverside wharves from redevelopment into non-port use. Extra wharf capacity is needed to handle predicted increases in river borne freight.
