ASA Member Refloats Tanker on Mississippi

On June 13, a member of the American Salvage Association (ASA) responded to grounded vessel in the Mississippi River just above Cubit’s Gap, about 10 miles below Venice, Louisiana. Traffic on the Mississippi was not impeded by the grounded vessel. The ASA member was placed on standby pending the results of aninitial effort to refloat the vessel with tugs. Within a few hours of the vessel owner’s activation of its Vessel Response Plan (VRP) on June 14 in accordance with the new US Coast Guard Salvage and Marine Firefighting Regulations, the ASA member began efforts to conduct an on board survey, prepare a damaged stability assessment, and develop a salvage plan to refloat the vessel.

Six Rescued from Grounded vessels

The Coast Guard rescued six people from grounded vessels in Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana, Saturday. At 2:35 p.m. watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report from a private helicopter of a 17-foot johnboat with three people on board that was taking on water in the Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana. Watchstanders directed the launch of an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans to assist the people. The mariners reported that their de-watering pump was keeping up with the flooding and requested a tow, and one member requested to be removed.

Coast Guard Investigates Grounded Fishing Vessel

UK Grounded Vessel Refloated

The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) issued a press notice stating that the cargo vessel that grounded after departing the port of Montrose has been refloated and returned to port. The coordinated salvage operation involved removal of some cargo and bunkers. There were no injuries or reports of pollution. Source: HK Law

ASA Member Responds in Gwadar, Pakistan

On January 20, a member of the American Salvage Association (ASA) successfully refloated a bulk carrier that ran aground near Gwadar Port in Pakistan. Led by their Salvage Master, ASA’s member mobilized a salvage team that included a naval architect and dive team, along with a high-horsepower tug, to refloat the grounded vessel carrying 50,000 metric tons of urea fertilizer. The crew safely refloated the 623 ft bulk carrier during high tide without having to lighter bunkers or cargo. The vessel and cargo were delivered to its owners with no damage to the environment.

T&T Bisso successfully refloated a bulk carrier that ran aground near Gwadar Port in Pakistan. Led by Salvage Master V. Seva, T&T Bisso mobilized a salvage team that included a naval architect and dive team, along with a high-horsepower tug, to refloat the grounded vessel carrying 50,000 metric tons of urea fertilizer. The crew safely refloated the 623.3-ft bulk carrier during high tide without having to lighter bunkers or cargo. The vessel and cargo were delivered to its owners with no damage to the environment. Fairmount Marine’s tug Fairmount Alpine has successfully assisted in the refloating of the grounded MV Ikan Sepat just offshore Puerto Cortés, Honduras. The salvage operation was directed by T&T Bisso Salvage. The MV Ikan Sepat is a 180m long, 28,503 DWT bulk carrier flying the Singapore flag. The vessel was grounded in the approach of the port of Puerto Cortés, located at the Gulf of Honduras in the northwest of the country. During mobilization of the Fairmount Alpine from Jamaica specialists from Fairmount Marine discussed the salvage operation with T&T Bisso’s salvage master.

Coast Guard Helps to Unground Bulker

Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Toledo, Station Marblehead, Ohio, along with the crew of the CSL Niagara and Lloyds Register, safely refloated a grounded vessel near Sandusky, Ohio, Monday night. The Canadian flagged, self-discharging, bulk cargo vessel CSL Niagara, operated by V-Ships, loaded with approximately 30,000 Metric Tons of Coal, grounded in the Moseley Channel, Sunday morning. Increased water levels and favorable wind conditions allowed the vessel to be freed with the assistance of three tugs contracted by V-Ships Canada.

Salvors Refloat Grounded Vessels in Scheldt

Salvage and towage companies Multraship and URS have successfully refloated two grounded vessels in the past week in the River Scheldt. On April 10, the Swedish-flag RoRo car carrier Grande Argentina ran aground off Terneuzen. The vessel, operated by Grimaldi Lines, was enroute from Antwerp when it suffered a complete black-out, ironically within view of Multraship’s headquarters in Terneuzen. Having swung hard to starboard, the vessel grounded on a sandbank. Working together, salvage teams from Multraship and URS mobilised a total of nine tugs and salvage craft to refloat the vessel in a quick and efficient operation. The salvors then escorted the vessel to Flushing, where an inspection revealed no structural damage, and the Grande Argentina was cleared to proceed with its voyage.

ASA Member Responds to Grounded Bulk Carrier

A member of the American Salvage Association (ASA) responded to a grounded bulk carrier, CSL Assiniboine, which occurred on November 16 in the St. Lawrence Seaway near Cardinal, Ontario, Canada. It has been reported that engine troubles caused the vessel to drift off course, but an investigation is underway. The Assiniboine was ballasted down until the ASA member’s four tugboats were ready to free the grounded vessel from the shoal. Additionally, approximately 10% of the carrier’s cargo of soybeans was lightered into a barge and later delivered to a local grain elevator. The CSL Assiniboine was successfully refloated on November 21st and has been moved to a berth where the remaining cargo will stay on board until a decision is made about where to offload it.

Tug on the Rocks, Lake Pontchartrain, Three Rescued

US Coast Guard 8th District says that it has rescued 3 crewmembers aboard the (uninspected) tugboat 'UTV Todd Michael' after it grounded on the rocks near the Lakefront Airport on Lake Pontchartrain. Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans launched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and a response boatcrew from Coast Guard Station New Orleans. The aircrew hoisted two crewmen from the ship, the boatcrew removed one member from the barge attached to the towing vessel. Both Coast Guard crews transported the three to emergency medical services.

Coast Guard Assists Fisherman

A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Air Station New Orleans airlifted a lone fisherman off his grounded 18 ft. fishing boat approximately 15 miles East of New Orleans near Bayou Delacroix, La. Richard Chatalain of Chalmette, Louisiana, contacted the Coast Guard my cellular telephone shortly after 3:00 pm Monday to report that his aluminum flat bottom boat was aground. Due to low tides and the remote location of the disabled vessel a 21 foot inflatable hull boat from Coast Guard Station New Orleans was unable to assist the man. It was determined that hoisting of the fisherman by helicopter would be necessary. Once the helicopter crew arrived on scene, they lowered a rescue basket to the grounded vessel and hoisted Mr. Chatalain into the aircraft’s cabin.

Response to Grounding of Clipper Lasco

The U. S. Coast Guard continues to coordinate the response to the grounding of the 645-ft. cargo ship Clipper Lasco just west of the designated anchorage area off Fort Lauderdale Beach, Fla. The vessel remains aground this evening as members of the unified command work to ensure that planned salvage operations do not cause further disruption to the ocean floor, are conducted as safely as possible, provide adequate resources for any contingencies that could arise and mitigate the risk of damaging the ship. Divers from Resolve Marine Group, the salvor contracted by representatives for the Clipper Lasco, surveyed the ship's hull and the ocean bottom. The survey revealed that the vessel did impact the reef and some coral.

Tank Barge Successfully Refloated

A tank barge that ran aground outside the channel in Raritan Bay near Wards Point Bend successfully re-floated. Reinauer Transportation conducted lightering operations throughout the night, and with the rising tide in the morning they were able to free the grounded vessel. The barge George Morris was being towed out to sea by the tug Rowan M. McAllister carrying 50,000 barrels of Ethanol aboard when it ran aground around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Coast Guard pollution response officers and marine investigators report that the ship suffered no apparent hull breach and no oil or Ethanol has entered the water. The barge George Morris and the towing barge Rockland are being moved to Perth Amboy Anchorage to continue lightering operations.

NTSB Issues Report on 2016 Columbia River Bulker Grounding

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued a report on its investigation into the November 2016 grounding of the bulk carrier Nenita in the Columbia River. The Marshall Islands-flagged vessel was fully laden when it suffered an engine failure that impacted its ability to maneuver and subsequently ran aground at Three Tree Point on the Washington State side of the river. The ship’s bulbous bow and hull were damaged, but no injuries or pollution were reported. The vessel was towed to Longview, Wash.

Ship Grounded on Welsh Coast – Removal Decided

The operation to remove the remaining 24,000 litres of fuel oil, along with oily water and other hazardous materials from the grounded vessel ‘Carrier’ has been completed. The vessel, which ran aground on 4 April near Llanddulas in North Wales, remains aground and is resting against concrete dolosse blocks on the beach close to the North Wales Expressway (A55). The owners of the vessel have declared it a Constructive Total Loss. PGC Demolition, the same company who were awarded the contract to remove the fuel oil from the vessel, were also awarded the contract to remove the wreck of the vessel. Their proposals to cut the vessel up on site and remove it for recycling have been approved by the Deputy to the Secretary of State’s Representative for Maritime Salvage and Intervention…

Grounded Vessel Re-floated, Shipping Channel Re-opened

The Savannah River was reopened with no restrictions after the Ever Radiant was safely re-floated and removed from the navigational channel. The 965-foot container ship ran aground in the Bloody Point Range while departing the Port of Savannah. The vessel was safely re-floated and moved farther offshore to an anchorage area at approximately 1:15 p.m. Two towing vessels were used to free the Ever Radiant from its grounding. The vessel has been ordered to remain at anchor until the problem causing the incident is identified and repaired. The Coast Guard has received information indicating three deep draft vessels were delayed as a result of this incident. The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the incident.

Coast Guard Responds to Cargo Ship Aground

The Coast Guard responded to a cargo ship that ran aground in the Chesapeake Bay. The Mediterranean Shipping Company vessel Japan, a 796-ft. Panamanian flagged cargo ship, ran aground near Sandy Point Light approximately one mile north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. A Coast Guard inspection team and boarding officers from Coast Guard Sector Baltimore were deployed to the grounded vessel. Additionally, a 25-foot Coast Guard response boat crew from Station Annapolis, Md., is on scene to enforce a safety zone around the vessel. There is no report of injuries or pollution. Two tugs hired by the shipping company are in route to the vessel to help free it. The Japan was in route to Port Elizabeth, NJ. This incident is currently under investigation.

Coast Guard Assists Grounded Vessel Near Cat Island

The U.S. Coast Guard reported that it assisted one person aboard a grounded vessel north of Cat Island, Monday. The operator of the vessel contacted Coast Guard Station Gulfport watchstanders reporting their sailing vessel was aground and in need of assistance. The person was requesting to be removed from the vessel due to deteriorating weather conditions. Coast Guard Sector Mobile, Ala., directed the launch of a Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and aircrew to assist. Once on scene, the aircrew hoisted the person aboard and transported him to Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans to awaiting family members. There were no reported injuries. uscgnews.com  

Russian Navy Receives New Harbor Tugboat

JSC Astrakhan Ship Repair Plant have built and delivered a new harbor hug to the Caspian Flotilla. Project 705B harbor tug was deigned specially for the Caspian Sea and the estuary of the Volga River. The ship is equipped with up-to-date navigation aids GLONASS, communication and automation equipment. Basic features of the ship is high navigability and shallow draft (0.28 meters) making possible to navigate in shallow waters of the Volga River, the Volga-Caspian Canal, and northern zones of the Caspian Sea. Two 800-shp engines make the vessel capableof towing any ship in the Caspian Flotilla.

The U.S. Coast Guard said it continues to monitor the response and salvage operations to the 656-foot HK-flagged bulk carrier Federal Rideau, hard aground in the downbound shipping channel of Lake St. Clair since early Sunday morning. Several attempts to refloat the vessel have been unsuccessful since then and five tugs have been dispatched for another attempt. Initial reports indicate there is no resultant pollution and no injuries were reported. Initial reports indicate there is no resultant pollution and no injuries were reported. At around 3 a.m., response coordinators at Coast Guard Sector Detroit received notice that the motor vessel Federal Rideau, a Hong Kong-flagged vessel, grounded on the downbownd channel in Lake St. Clair near the Detroit River. The vessel is carrying approximately 22,672 tons of wheat. Coast Guard marine inspectors from Coast Guard Sector Detroit Prevention Department responded to the grounding to assess the situation and determine the extent of any structural damage to the vessel.

The Coast Guard informs it is responding to a 36,563 dwt 656-foot freighter that is hard aground in the downbound shipping channel of Lake St. Clair. Coast Guard Sector Detroit said that the motor vessel Federal Rideau, a Hong Kong-flagged vessel carrying 22,672 tons of wheat, had  grounded on the downbownd channel in Lake St. Clair near the Detroit River. The vessel was  en route to Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Marine inspectors from Coast Guard Sector Detroit Prevention Department responded to the grounding to assess the situation and determine the extent of any structural damage to the vessel.
