The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) has launched a virtual tour of the GTS Admiral W.M. Callaghan (T-AKR-1001), a MARAD Ready Reserve Force vessel currently berthed in Alameda, California. The online 360-degree photographic tour, available of the MARAD website, gives viewers the experience of walking around the vessel’s bridge, engine room and surrounding spaces and provides a window into our nation’s maritime heritage. Launched in 1967, the Admiral W.M. Callaghan is the first all-gas-turbine powered vessel with a roll-on/roll-off capability constructed for the U.S. Navy.

Yakutsk hosted today celebrations dedicated to welding the first joint of the Power of Siberia gas transmission system (GTS) meant to be a crucial element of the gas supply system being built in eastern Russia. The GTS will convey gas from the Yakutia and Irkutsk gas production centers to the Far East and China. The attendance was comprised of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Zhang Gaoli, First Vice Premier of China's State Council, Yury Trutnev, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation and Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District, Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee, Wang Dongjin, Vice President of China National Petroleum Corporation and Yegor Borisov, Acting Head of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).

Customs Info provides comprehensive trade data and related research tools to more than 800 multi-national shippers to help them reduce operating costs, improve customs compliance, and accelerate supply chain speed. This trade data populates GTM systems, including SAP GTS and Oracle GTM, and includes trade tariffs, duties, regulations, trade agreements, rules of origin and other trade-related content.

Wood Group GTS has secured a $3.2 million contract from National Grid to provide gas turbine icon™ governor control system upgrades to nine Rolls-Royce Avon gas turbines, including an additional governor to act as a rotational spare. The upgrades will be fitted to gas turbines operating at compressor stations located in Cambridge, Diss, Chelmsford and Huntingdon in the United Kingdom. The icon governor control system regulates fuel flow into the gas turbine, providing stable operation across the turbine performance range from no load to full load conditions. This upgrade will address equipment obsolescence, enabling the continued operation of all four compressor stations and providing increased flexibility to ensure the essential flow of natural gas across the UK network.

Wood Group GTS and Apex Bethel Energy Center, LLC (“Apex”) have signed a three-year operations & maintenance (O&M) agreement for the Bethel Energy Center. Under the $12 million contract, Wood Group GTS will be responsible for care, custody and control of the facility when it begins commercial operation in 2017. Construction is soon to begin for the plant in East Texas, which will utilize compressed air energy storage (“CAES”) technology. “We needed an O&M partner willing to work with us during the development stage of the project. In Wood Group, we found a highly experienced O&M service provider with an excellent reputation in the industry and is well respected by investors,” said Jack Farley, CEO of Apex.

Former Calhoon M.E.B.A. Engineering School Instructor passes away at the age of 81. It is with great sadness that the Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association (M.E.B.A.) announces the death of long-time friend and colleague, Thomas “Tom” Francis Cannon. Cannon passed away peacefully on January 7, 2012 in Salerno, Italy. He was 81 years old. “Tom was an engineer’s engineer. He excelled at everything he put his mind to, and inspired those around him to achieve their best,” said M.E.B.A. President Mike Jewell. “He was an excellent engineer, a motivating teacher, and a personal friend.

GTS Finnjet will start sailing on route Rostock-Tallinn-StPetersburg in June 2004.

The Ukrainian captain of the Katie engaged the ship in violent maneuvers as a Sea King helicopter sought to drop the sailors by cable on deck to take over the vessel in the North Atlantic, the commander of the naval operation reported. But within 50 minutes the Canadians had grabbed full control, with no injuries to sailors or the crew of the ship, which had been embroiled in a bitter commercial dispute between its owner and the Canadian firm that chartered the vessel.

Two Canadian warships have pulled alongside a transport ship carrying hundreds of Canadian army vehicles home from Kosovo to send a message to its U.S. owners to stop delaying the voyage and proceed to port. But the owners, who say they are not being paid by the contractor that hired them, said on Tuesday they intend to keep the ship, the GTS Katie, at large until their bitter commercial dispute is ended. "I guess she's going to stay at anchor until we get an agreement," said Flip Walters, chief executive of the Katie's owners, Third Ocean Marine Navigation. The Katie is now anchored 86 nautical miles south of Newfoundland's southeastern tip.

Evergreen Line is to upgrade its Greece-Turkey (GTS) service – currently linking its hub in Taranto, Italy with Piraeus and Thessaloniki in Greece, and Haydarpasa and Gemlik in Turkey – to create two weekly services deploying a combined three vessels. At the end of May the existing two-vessel service will become the GT1 and GT2 services, deploying one and two vessels respectively, providing customers with greater capacity, wider port coverage and improved schedule integrity. The weekly GT1 service, deploying the Italia Marittima-chartered 698 TEU Agilitas, will have the following port rotation: Taranto - Piraeus - Izmir - Taranto. The first eastbound sailing is scheduled to depart Taranto, Italy on 26 May. Westbound, the first sailing is due to depart Piraeus, Greece on 28 May.

Italia Marittima is to launch a new service linking its Mediterranean hub, Taranto Container Terminal, with Algiers. The so-called ALS service is expected to commence on 9 May. A chartered vessel of 369TEU will offer sailings every nine days. In addition to providing a feeder link with the Evergreen Group’s global services, Italia Marittima will also be offering a regional service linking Algiers with Italy. Italia Marittima already operates three feeder services based on Taranto, namely the Tunis - Malta Service (TMS), the Greece - Turkey Service (GTS) and the Intra-Mediterranean Service (IMS). As its name suggests, the TMS service links Taranto with Tunis and with the Marsaxlokk container terminal in Malta.
