Eco Marine Power to Use Artificial Intelligence

To further enhance its research capabilities Eco Marine Power announced today that it will begin using the Neural Network Console provided by Sony Network Communications Inc., as part of a strategy to incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into various ongoing ship related technology projects including the further development of the patented Aquarius MRE (Marine Renewable Energy) and EnergySail. The Neural Network Console is an integrated development environment using deep learning for AI creation and has been used in deep learning applied technology development within Sony since 2015. Various functions are included such as recognition technology and a full-fledged GUI (graphical user interface) and these allow for deep learning programs to be developed.

At Nor-Shipping this week, China Merchants Industry Holding (CMIH) and DNV GL have signed a strategic cooperation agreement with a focus on advancing shipbuilding in the gas carrier, offshore and special vessel segments. The agreement – signed by Gui Ming Zhu, Deputy General Manager of CMIH and Director of Yiu Lian Dockyards (Shekou) Limited, and Torgeir Sterri, Regional Manager Greater China at DNV GL - Maritime  â€“ will see the companies work together to optimize construction processes and quality control, to develop vessels that meet the varying requirements of these markets.

South Korea Eyes Iran's Shipping Industry

South Korean companies are briskly moving to tap into Iran's fast-growing shipping industry, regarding the Iranian boom as a breakthrough to their prolonged business slump amid the global economic slowdown. According to  IRNA, the head of South Korea Maritime Institute Sang Gui Kim voiced his country's readiness for investment in Iran's ports and shipping industry. Sang Gui Kim told reporters on the sidelines of Iran-South Korea Economic Conference in Isfahan. Sang Gui Kim said that Iran boasts of high capabilities in the oil and gas sectors and South Korea can cooperate with Iran on building ships, maintenance and repair of naval fleet and preparing ports for operation. He announced that South Korean cabinet members will visit Tehran in the coming months.

Indonesia Sinks Boats from China

According to The China People's Daily, Indonesia has just sank a large Chinese vessel and 40 other foreign ships caught fishing in The South China Sea. The Jakarta Post cited Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti as saying that the Gui Xei Yu 12661, a steel-made, 300-gross-ton boat, was sunk on Wednesday in Pontianak, West Kalimantan after it was detonated by the ministry with an explosive device planted on it. AP confirms that Indonesian authorities blew up and sank the 41 foreign fishing vessels as a warning against poaching in the country's waters. The 300 gross tonne Chinese vessel was destroyed with a low-explosive device on its hull in West Kalimantan, said Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti.

China Watching Greece After Port Sale Shelved

China is closely monitoring the policies of the new Greek government after Athens said this week it will stop the sale of a majority stake in Greece's biggest port, China's trade ministry said on Thursday. The Greek government last year had shortlisted China's Cosco Group as a potential buyer of a 67 percent stake in Piraeus Port Authority. But Greece stopped the sale this week, saying it would be put on hold as newly elected Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras halted privatisation plans agreed under Greece's bailout deal. "We are paying a great deal of attention," Shen Danyang, the spokesman for China's Ministry of Commerce, said when asked about the suspended deal.

Swedish Coastal Radio Network Modernized

The Swedish coastal radio network is a cornerstone of search and rescue activities in Swedish waters and is considered to be the mariner’s communication lifeline. The Swedish Maritime Administration is now investing some SEK 50 million to improve and modernise the system. “The coastal radio network is a fundamental part of our maritime infrastructure. The planned investment will improve its stability and increase maritime safety even further”, says Jon Granstedt, the Administration’s President of Construction and Engineering.

SWM Uses Automation To Speed Workflow

The ability of ship repair yards to quickly, efficiently and effectively get ships in and out in the least possible amount of time is cornerstone to their very existence. Southwest Marine in San Diego has recently adopted an advanced, automated floating dry dock control system, which promises to ensure these lofty goals are met. In May 1999, Randy Jaeger a project manager at Southwest Marine (SWM) in San Diego, Calif., contacted IDAC West to discuss retroffitting their floating dry dock with a new automatic control system. SWM's 22,000-ton Floating Dry Dock, known as "Pride of San Diego" that is typically used for Naval Ship repair, had an existing control system that had become outdated and difficult to maintain.

The world's marine insurers collectively lost $3 billion in 1999, Norway's Central Union of Marine Underwriters (CEFOR) said. Cefor's calculation uses the collective experience of marine insurers in Norway - one of the world's major marine insurance markets - and extrapolates the results to the global industry. Cefor's md said that not even in their previous worst case estimates did CEFOR anticipate anything like this. The principal reason for the losses is continuing reduction in insurance premium rates, said Formso. On CEFOR's current estimates, rates in 2000 have dropped to 31 per cent of their 1994 levels. Navis Introduces Chinese-Language Dynamic Positioning System

Finnish dynamic positioning systems manufacturer Navis Engineering has launched a Chinese language version of its NavDP4000 dynamic positioning system graphic user interface (GUI). The step has been taken in reaction to increasing sales of Navis Engineering in China. Navis Engineering believes that the move will improve the safety of DP operations onboard the growing fleet of Chinese-flagged offshore vessels manned with Chinese-speaking crew. As well as the GUI, the NavDP4000’s voice alarms have been translated into Chinese, further enhancing safety. “Ever since we started working closely with Chinese shipyards in 2008, we have been aware of a problem of interaction with shipyard engineers on technical issues,” said Vladimir Antonenko, Project Director, Navis Engineering.

Advances in CAD and CAM System Integration

Over the past 25 years CAD and CAM have become a vital part of shipbuilding. The individual tools have evolved into highly capable products of today. This has included the change from 2-D to 3-D CAD, a dramatic increase in the level of usability (example: from batch mode to fancy 3-D GUI's) and increased functionality within the tools themselves. With the development of these tools has also come improved integration of the CAD and CAM data. While 2-D CAD drawings were originally entered into the CAM system manually, it has now become commonplace to utilize a fully integrated product model environment from vendors such as Dassault Systems (Catia), Intergraph (ISDP), Nupas-Cadmatic, Sener (Foran) and Tribon Solutions (Tribon M1).
