Caterpillar to Pilot Hybrid Solution on a Jackson Offshore PSV

Steel Cut for New Staten Island Ferry

The City of New York Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) Staten Island Ferry Division and Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. (ESG) cut steel to officially begin the construction of the first of three new 320’ Staten Island Ollis Class Ferries. The steel cutting ceremony held August 29, 2017 took place in Eastern’s steel processing and pre-fabrication building at its Allanton facility in Panama City, Fla. Attending the ceremony from Staten Island Ferry Division was John Collins, Director of Ferry Engineering and Bill Tomalonis, Vessel Construction Manager SIF Division.

BAE Systems Delivers Tug to Seabulk Tankers

Built at BAE Systems’ Jacksonville, Fla. shipyard, the new tug Sea Power has delivered the tug Sea Power to Seabulk Tankers, Inc. to be used to enhance the shipper’s Jones Act coastal operation, powering barges that transport chemical and petroleum products between U.S. ports. Sea Power is a 141-foot-long, 12,000-brake horsepower, twin-screw tug that will work in tandem with a high-specification, 30,000 deadweight tonnage chemical tank barge as an articulated tug and barge unit. BAE Systems and Guido Perla & Associates, Inc., of Seattle, Washington, designed the vessel.

New ATB Brings High Maneuverability to Jones Act Fleet

The Dutch company Van der Velden Marine Systems (VDVMS) in conjunction with the U.S. representative Ships Machinery International, Inc. (SMI) has announced the launching of a new Jones Act Articulated Tug Barge (ATB) with BARKE high-lift flap rudders for coastwise service in the U.S. This new design vessel brings increased maneuvering to the fleet of ATB vessels plying U.S. coastal waters. Tank tests prove that for this type of vessel this is the most effective rudder design. This ATB will have enhanced maneuverability and excellent course keeping stability.

Offshore Vessels: Squall Delivered to Jackson Offshore Operators

BAE Systems delivered its fourth and final of series platform support vessel (PSV) to Jackson Offshore Operators, LLC, completing a four-ship program that began in 2012. Motor Vessel Squall joins three other vessels built by BAE Systems’ Jacksonville, Florida, shipyard to support U.S. offshore oil exploration. Squall is the fourth vessel of the GPA 675J class, designed by Guido Perla and Associates of Seattle. Construction of the 252-ft. vessel began in December 2014 and it was delivered on January 31, 2016.

Coatings Quietly Helping to Control Noise

U.S. Navy’s AGOR Research Vessels are built to be as operationally quiet as possible. That’s where Mascoat’s Sound Control-dB coatings come in. When the U.S. Navy began its design and build program for its newest generation of research vessels, it specified that the vessels had to be as quiet as possible. That’s because a large part of ocean research involves listening and excessive ship noise tends to negate that effort. Achieving the goal of an exceptionally quiet vessel, the vessel’s design team employed a variety of methods to meet the Navy’s exacting standards, choosing systems, defined equipment locations and designed special installation methods with acoustics as a priority. One of those methods involved Mascoat’s Sound Control-dB coatings.

Great Ships of 2014: R/V Neil Armstrong - Multifaceted Sea Explorer

 Two ships, $145m GPA designed Diesel Electric propulsion

The Ocean Class Auxiliary General Oceanographic Research (AGOR) vessel hull number 27 started its official life as the R/V Neil Armstrong, the first research vessel named after a space explorer. The ship was designed by Guido Perla and Associates and built at Dakota Creek Industries (DCI). R/V Neil Armstrong will replace the R/V Knorr, in service since 1968, one year before Armstrong’s walk on the moon. The R/V Knorr, AGOR-15, is retiring after logging over one million miles in service to the Navy and WHOI.

Safely, efficiently lifting and handling increasingly heavy loads takes a hefty dose of the latest heavy lift products and systems. Rolls-Royce is a ubiquitous and growing force in all matters maritime, inching toward the one-stop-shop premise. It is particularly well known in the deck machinery sector, and it recently signed a deal with Detroit Chile SA to supply offshore cranes to nine PSVs under construction at Detroit Brasil Ltda. shipyard, in Itajaì, Brazil. The order includes nine ship sets of the dual draglink crane, making 18 cranes in total.

The continued maturation of Offshore Service Vessel design is embodied in recent contracts and deliveries. Ulstein Verft subsea newbuild Island Performer was built for Island Offshore to be a flexible, RLWI/IMR vessel, destined to serve its first five years for FTO in the Gulf of Mexico. “The vessel is customized to suit the scope of work in the FTO contract, in which RLWI (Riser-less Light Well Intervention) and IMR (Inspection/Maintenance/Repair) are the main tasks. She is able to perform operations at depths down to 3,000m,” said Håvard Ulstein, Managing Director, Island Offshore.

Brazilian PSVs Get Rolls-Royce Offshore Cranes

Rolls-Royce signed a contract with Detroit Chile SA to supply offshore cranes to nine Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs) presently under construction at Detroit Brasil Ltda. shipyard, in Itajaì, Brazil. The delivery will include nine ship sets of the dual draglink crane, making eighteen cranes in total. Upon completion, the vessels, designed by Guido Perla, will enter service on an eight-year contract with state-owned Brazilian oil company Petrobras. Brazilian Starnav Serviços Marìtimos Ltda, a subsidiary of Detroit Chile, will operate the vessels.

GPA Enters Mexican Offshore Market

Seattle-based Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Company Guido Perla & Associates, Inc. (GPA) has been awarded a contract to deliver the Design Package and Class Approval Package for two GPA 150M FSVs. The ships for Enterprise Shipping, awarded in a contract to build two Fast Supply Vessels for Petróleos Mexicano (Pemex) earlier in 2014, will be constructed at Maritima de Ecologia S.A. de C.V., (Marecsa), a shipyard in Mazatlán, Mexico. This will be the first commercial, non-governmental project revitalizing the marine construction in that country.

On March 29, the Ocean Class Auxiliary General Oceanographic Research (AGOR) vessel hull number 27 started its official life as the R/V Neil Armstrong, the first research vessel named after a space explorer. Carol Armstrong, the widow of the famed astronaut, performed the christening duties during a brief sunbreak on a windy and rainy Pacific Northwest afternoon. The number of illustrious speakers highlighted the rich diversity of agencies involved in the design, construction and operation of the vessel.

Navy Research Vessel Neil Armstrong Christened

Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering company Guido Perla & Associates, Inc. (GPA) announced that the christening ceremony for the Oceanographic Research Vessel AGOR 27, named in honor of the famed Neil Armstrong, was held at Dakota Creek Industries (DCI) in Anacortes, Wash., on March 29, 2014. Kali Armstrong, granddaughter of the late astronaut and the Maid of Honor, sang the National Anthem and Carol Knight Armstrong, Neil Armstrong’s wife, served as the ship’s sponsor, performing the honor of breaking the traditional bottle of champagne across the ship’s bow.

New Director of Engineering for Foss

Foss Maritime announced that Michael Minnig has been promoted to Director of Engineering. Minnig joined Foss in 2012 with more than 15 years of naval architecture experience in vessel design, shipyard construction support, and project management. He has a background in vessel stability assessment, structural engineering including finite element analysis and 3-D modeling. "Michael brings strong technical skills coupled with extensive industry experience to his new position, " said Mike Magill, Vice President of Technical Services for Foss, who made the announcement.

Navy Research Vessel Launched with Siemens Propulsion

February 22 marked the launch of Neil Armstrong, the first of two Navy oceanographic research vessels to be launched with Siemens Blue multi-drive low voltage system. Neil Armstrong was launched in Anacortes, Washington. Siemens said the use of Siemens Blue improves the vessels reliability due to failsafe features that help the vessel owner lower maintenance costs, increase efficiency and improve operational ease for the vessel and crew. The ship’s advance design decreases fuel consumption, resulting in reduced emission of harmful greenhouse gases. Siemens provided the main generators, main propulsion and thruster motors, switchboards, power management system and automation system for alarm, monitoring and control functions.

Diesel-Electric Units Prepared for Navy’s AGOR Project

During most of 2012 Cummins Northwest was busy with the procurement of the various subsystems and assembly of the diesel-electric units for the two Ocean Class Auxiliary General Purpose Oceanographic Research (AGOR) vessels building at Dakota Creek Shipyards. The company delivered the first four-unit ship set in January of this year. Seattle-based Guido Perla & Associates, Inc. has done the design work for the two vessels. Four Cummins QSK38-DM powered electrical generators will provide power for each of these 238 x 50-ft. vessels.

Rolls-Royce and Guido Perla and Associates, Inc. (GPA) collaborative efforts are delivering results for customers in North America. Rolls-Royce and GPA most recently teamed up last year to provide a highly innovative design and power & propulsion systems integration solution for two PSVs for Jackson Offshore Operators. Delivery of the first two GPA 675J PSVs, currently under construction at BAE Systems’ shipyard in Jacksonville, Florida, will be made in 2014. The option for two additional vessels of the same type was exercised earlier this year.

Factory Trawler to Retrofit Rolls-Royce Promas Lite Propulsion

Rolls-Royce has won its first contract to supply a new version of its innovative Promas Lite propulsion system to American ship owner Glacier Fish to improve propeller efficiency on its Guido Perla Associates designed factory trawler 'Alaska Ocean'. Promas Lite is an integrated propeller and rudder system that increases efficiency and is designed specifically for retrofitting to existing ships. On January 29, 2014, the Breeze, designed by Guido Perla & Associates, Inc. (GPA), was launched at BAE Systems in Jacksonville, Fla., for Jackson Offshore Operators. Breeze is the first of the state-of-the-art GPA 675J PSV series destined to operate in the Gulf of Mexico. “The launching of the Breeze represents a huge milestone and it gets us one step closer to our ultimate goal of delivery.
