A little-known annual American commemoration is coming up again on May 22 - National Maritime Day. It was declared by Congress in 1933 to call attention to America’s proud maritime heritage and to honor the men and women who serve and have served as U.S. merchant mariners. It’s also a day to recognize and reflect on the rewards that America’s ports bring the country in terms of jobs, economic development, goods movement and international competitiveness. Royal Caribbean’s Brilliance of the Seas, one of the biggest ships on the seven seas, docked in port at Nauticus, Norfolk for a short time and fueled big business across Hampton Roads. Nearly 3,000 people on-board flooded on the streets of Norfolk. More than 500 tourists took advantage of shore excursions and day trips to Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown. The cruise ship, which has 860 crew members, is scheduled to dock at the downtown Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center at 11 a.m. with a departure scheduled for 6:30 p.m., according to a news release. “We’re thrilled to welcome Royal Caribbean back to Norfolk,” said Nauticus executive director Stephen E. Kirkland.

FRC International is running the first WBV Manager course in the U.S. on 18th June at HiPer Craft 2013 in Norfolk Va. Due to the continuing restrictions on Defense Department budgets, FRC International is offering reduced-rate registration for the WBV Manager course at HiPer Craft. The reduced-rate registration is $200 for all active duty military and civilian government employees (non-contractor civilian and military). The standard course fee is $400 per person. Attendees also receive free admission to all three days of HiPer Craft.

Notice of Open Meeting: The Hydrographic Services Review Panel (HSRP) is a Federal Advisory Committee established to advise the Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere on matters related to the responsibilities and authorities set forth in section 303 of the Hydrographic Services Improvement Act of 1998, its amendments, and such other appropriate matters that the Under Secretary refers to the Panel for review and advice. Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) and its guests celebrated the naming of its fourth U.S. flag tanker, the MAERSK PEARY, last Friday at the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center in Norfolk. The freshly painted, 591-foot ship sat pier-side in downtown Norfolk and was adorned with red, white and blue bunting as distinguished guests, customers, partners, and colleagues welcomed the vessel into MLL’s U.S. flag fleet. The vessel is ice-classed and is aptly named after Rear Admiral Robert E. Peary, famous for his excursions to the North Pole.

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) changed command in Norfolk on August 5. Capt. Tushar R. Tembe relieved Capt. Joseph M. Clarkson as Truman's commanding officer during a ceremony at the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center at Nauticus museum. Tembe, the new commanding officer, said he intends to take what he has learned while previously serving as a commanding officer and apply it to leading the ship and crew to further success. "Today belongs to Joe and Sandy Clarkson," said Tembe. "You two have had a very successful command tour and have poured your heart and souls into Truman over the past two-and-a-half years and it shows over every inch of the ship and her crew. Tembe reported to Truman in July 2011.
