Rhenus-Arkon-Shipinvest Orders 4 Vessels

German shipping company Rhenus-Arkon-Shipinvest has placed orders for the first four environmentally-friendly vessels known as Hanse Eco Short Sea Coasters.The short sea bulkers are expected to be delivered during the second half of 2021, with the construction work scheduled to begin in February 2020.The vessels are based on the latest developments related to environmental protection, digitization and design.The ‘Hanse Eco’ fleet is the result of an initiative launched by Torsten Westphal, one of the founding members of Arkon Shipping. FSL Trust Sells Vessel for USD 6.2mln to Reduce Debt

Singapore's First Ship Lease (FSL) Trust said that  it has sold containership, FSL Santos for $6.2 million to reduce its debt service requirements for the fourth quarter. FSL Santos is a German-built, 1,221 TEU vessel built in 2003 that has been deployed in the Hanse Containership Pool. The net proceeds from this Disposal will be applied in full to the Trust's outstanding loan facility and the Trust will record a gain on disposal of approximately US$800,000 for 4Q2017. Roger Woods, Chief Executive Officer of FSLTM commented: “We are very pleased to have been able to dispose of one of the Trust’s older vessels. The Disposal of this 14-year old vessel also saves the Trust the expense of a third special survey due in 2QFY2018”.

Two AIDA Ships to Participate in German Maritime Festival

For the fourth time in a row, AIDA Cruises has agreed to sponsor a ship for one of these major public attractions of one of Germany’s biggest maritime festivals. Thanks to the support of the cruise company based in Rostock, the venerable Russian vessel “Kruzenshtern” will be a guest at the 27th Hanse Sail from August 10–13, 2017. The “Kruzenshtern,” a four-masted barque, which sails under a Russian flag, is the only remaining ship still in service from the famous Flying-P Liners…

Containership Catches Fire at Manila Port

The Marshall Islands-flagged containership MV Cape Moreton caught fire while berthed at the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT)in Tondo,  in the Philippines on Saturday. Reports from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said smoke was first seen billowing from freight containers onboard MV Cape Moreton around 9:15 a.m. Photos from the scene show thick smoke billowing from the cargo area as firefighters battled the blaze. The PCG said around 20 fire trucks of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) were sent to put out the flames, with some responders also using tugboats to approach the vessel. BFP personnel boarded the vessel and assisted the ship's crew. The 27,786-gross ton cargo ship, owned by Cape Moreton Shipping Company Ltd., arrived at MICP at 7:48 p.m. last Friday.

Hapag-Lloyd, CSAV Complete Merger

Hapag-Lloyd and the Chilean Compañía Sud Americana de Vapores (CSAV) are joining forces, by merging CSAV´s container business activities into Hapag-Lloyd, becoming the fourth-largest liner shipping company in the world. The corresponding contracts for the merger of the two companies were signed back in April in Hamburg. With approval from all the relevant global authorities all condition precedents were fulfilled. The merger of Hapag-Lloyd AG with the container business activities of the Chilean shipping company founded in Valparaíso, in 1872, is expected to result in many synergies.
