ClassNK Announces Executive Appointments

Liquefied Hydrogen Carriers: FUKUI, ClassNK in Cargo Tank Safety Valve Study

Fukui Seisakusho and ClassNK have signed a Memorandum of Understanding concerning a joint study on a safety relief valve for a cargo tank of liquefied hydrogen carriers at the "Gastech2023" held in Singapore.To combat global warming, attention is growing towards hydrogen as an energy source that does not emit CO2 at the point of use. The realization of a hydrogen-based society necessitates the establishment of a secure and efficient supply chain that distributes hydrogen produced in an environmentally friendly manner to consumption areas.

ClassNK Grants AIP for GTT’s Upgraded LNG Fuel Tank

Classification society ClassNK said it has issued an approval in principle (AIP) to GTT’s technical solution fitted with Mark III membrane tank.The design developed by GTT is an upgrade of the Mark III system with a design pressure up to 2 bar gauge (barg) for LNG fuel applications. NAPA, a maritime software, services, and data analysis provider, has announced the appointment of Tor E. Svensen, Vice President, Marine Technology at Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines to its board. Svensen has previously served as CEO of DNV GL Maritime, chairman of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), and professor at the University of Strathclyde.As CEO of DNV GL Maritime, Svensen helped to outline a consistent vision of shipping's technology-enabled future, which achieved sustained, empirical improvements in safety, sustainability, and efficiency.

ClassNK Grants AIP to KHI LNG-Powered Bulker

Leading Classification Society ClassNK granted an Approval in Principle (AIP) based on its Rule Part GF which adopts IGF Code (regulation for ships using low-flashpoint fuels) to Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) for their project on the concept design of an LNG-fuelled 207K DWT bulk carrier.Speaking on the occasion, ClassNK Corporate Officer and Director of Technical Solution Department Hayato Suga said “The maritime industry has been setting its sights on LNG as an energy source for ships as it is an environmentally-friendly alternative to fossil fuels.

ClassNK Publishes LH2 Carrier Guidelines

Classification society ClassNK has released its Guidelines for Liquefied Hydrogen (LH2) Carriers for the safe constructions and operation of LH2 carriers based on provisions of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Interim Recommendations. As a low carbon energy source, the use of hydrogen as a fuel is seen as a major possible solution to environmental problems caused by fuel emissions, the classification society said. Suga to Chair Tanker Forum

The Tanker Structure Cooperative Forum (TSCF) has elected Hayato Suga as its next Chairman at a recent Steering Committee Meeting. Hayato Suga is the General Manager of ClassNK’s Natural Resources and Energy Department and one of ClassNK’s foremost experts on tanker vessels. The TSCF was established in 1983 to allow members to share their collective experience in order to improve tanker structural safety. The TSCF’s membership includes representatives from major national and international oil companies, shipowners and classification societies.
