Hydor Acquires EF Marine

Oslo-based Marine MGA Hydor AS has acquired all the shares in the Singapore- and Rotterdam-based marine MGA, EF Marine Pte. Ltd., and its subsidiary.The combined company will from hereafter be branded as Hydor, with a total team of 34 people, having offices in Oslo (head office), Rotterdam, Hamburg, Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai. Fifty Years of Seafarer Training in the South Pacific

Approximately 200 guests celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Marine Training Center (MTC) on the Kiribati island of Tarawa in the South Pacific. Although some 13,700 kilometers lie between Hamburg and the school in Tarawa, these places are closely connected. Hamburg Süd cofounded the school for training seafarers 50 years ago. The company is also the managing partner of the joint venture SPMS (South Pacific Marine Services GbR), which brokers the placement of trained seafarers with the partner shipping companies. In addition to Hamburg Süd, the sponsors of training, and Kiribati’s largest employers, include the shipping companies Aug. Bolten, F. Laeisz, Fisser & van Doornum, Leonhardt & Blumberg, and Reederei Nord.

Hapag-Lloyd, UASC Signs Merger Agreement

Hapag-Lloyd AG (Hapag-Lloyd) and United Arab Shipping Company S.A.G. (UASC) have signed a Business Combination Agreement (BCA) to merge both companies, subject to the necessary regulatory and contractual approvals. United Heavy Lift Gears up for the Asian Boom

Set to expand its footprint in the South Asian market, Hamburg-based United Heavy Lift (UHL) appointed strategically placed Lexicon Overseas Pvt Ltd. as its General Agents in India, to help ramp up operations from Mumbai. With two vessels calling at Mumbai port each month the company has plans to increase the number gradually and add other Indian ports to their schedule. Lars Rolner, Managing Director of UHL who is in Mumbai since last week along with some of the heads of the company’s various divisions said, “India today is whole different country from what I saw in 1985. The industry is set to grow and so the infrastructure in the ports. I find there are large projects just on the doorstep of India, especially the whole Middle East region.

Rickmers Shipmanagement Achieves ISO 50001 Certification

Rickmers becomes the first German company operating in the maritime industry and one of only a handful of shipping companies in the world to achieve certification to the ISO 50001 Energy Management System standard. Rickmers Shipmanagement received the accredited ISO 50001 certification from GL Systems Certification (GL) for its offices in Hamburg and Singapore, as well as for ten ships from its fleet. The handover of the certificates took place at the Rickmers head office in Hamburg on the 10th of January 2013. GL Certify Siemens' Prototype Offshore Wind Turbine

GL Renewables Certification rendered to Siemens for its new 6-megawatt offshore wind turbine SWT-6.0-154. The prototype certification is a prerequisite for the testing of the turbine. Field testing of Siemens Wind Power’s new 154-meter rotor for the six-megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbine was carried out in Østerild, Denmark earlier this month. Siemens Wind Power developed its new 6-megawatt wind turbine for use at sea. The direct-drive wind turbine is equipped with what are currently the world's longest rotor blades – each blade measures 75 meters in length. With a record rotor diameter of 154 meters, each SWT-6.0-154 turbine can produce 25 million kilowatt hours of clean electricity in offshore locations, enough to supply 6,000 households.

Certification for Siemens SWT 6.0-154 Wind Turbine Prototype

GL Renewables Certification has provided Siemens Wind Power prototype certification for its new six MW offshore wind turbine SWT-6.0-154. The prototype certification is a prerequisite for the testing of the turbine. Field testing of Siemens Wind Power's new 154-meter rotor for the six-megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbine began in Østerild, Denmark, on October 6, 2012. GL Names New SVP Global Sales

Germanischer Lloyd (GL) has appointed Mr Christian Freiherr von Oldershausen to the newly created position of Senior Vice President Global Sales. In his new position, Mr von Oldershausen will be responsible for enhancing global sales, working closely together with GL’s regional and area management. The appointment of Mr von Oldershausen reflects GL’s ambition to further sharpen its customer focus and continue to expand its global activities. Mr von Oldershausen will be based in GL’s Head Office in Hamburg and begins in his new role on 1 January 2012.

GL Exchange Forum - Report on MEPC's 62nd session

The subject of Carbon Dioxide dominates the future of many industries today. Whether it be the Shipping, Automotive, Aviation, or Power Generation industries the questions of how to account for, reduce, produce, capture and minimise the impact of Carbon Dioxide generated by that industry is seldom left out of the discussion. So it was Germanischer Lloyd’s traditional recap of the latest session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of International Maritime Organization (IMO), focused on the groundbreaking developments at the 62nd session. The 62nd Session was notable for several reasons, the use of a vote to approve the measures rather than by consensus and the establishment of a North American emissions control area for example.

IACS Meeting Focus: Common Rules, Surveyor Safety

The 61st Council Meeting of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) at Germanischer Lloyd's head office in Hamburg achieved a number of significant developments. Dr Hermann J. Klein, Chairman of IACS and member of the Executive Board of GL, welcomed thirty representatives of eleven IACS member societies. The group of high level class managers reviewed the harmonization process of the Common Structural Rules for tankers and bulk carriers. The Council agreed on a revised time schedule for the harmonization project aligning with the latest IMO decision on the implementation of Goal Based Standards. IMO has requested submission of rules for verification by December 31st, 2013. The Council confirmed the significance of moving ahead with the harmonization project.

Gas As Ship Fuel, GL Forum

Gas as ship fuel was the topic of the March 18 GL First Class Exchange Forum which highlighted GL's approach towards the environmental concerns of the maritime industry. The forum addressed all aspects related to LNG as an alternative ship fuel. Invited speakers presented the LNG supply chain development from a ship owner's and gas terminal operator's view. New Head Office for GL

During the past three weeks, the Hamburg staff of Germanischer Lloyd (GL) - numbering more than 1,600 - have moved to the new Head Office at Brooktorkai 18 in Hamburg's HafenCity district. With this relocation, the company is bringing 14 separate sites in Hamburg together all under the same roof. At its new Head Office, the globally active technical assurance and consulting company and ship classification society will concentrate and focus its business segments Maritime Services, Oil & Gas and Renewables. From the Head Office in Hamburg, GL directs a worldwide network of currently 6,800 engineers and experts in over 80 countries. The new GL Head Office spans two construction sites offering an office space of 45,000 m² - equivalent to seven soccer fields.

GL Holds First Tanker Forum

Germanischer Lloyd held its first-ever “GL Tanker Forum” on March 1, 2004. The meeting was convened at the classification society’s head office in Hamburg and featured presentations by GL experts on a range of topical tanker industry issues to some 20 invited representatives of tanker shipping companies and shipyards. The event was the latest in an ongoing series of “Forum” meetings organized by GL. An open discussion session with attending industry representatives once again proved to be a valuable part of the proceedings. Papers presented by the GL experts covered “Permanent Means of Access”, “Legal Aspects of Anti-Fouling Systems (TBT-free Systems)” and “CAP Condition Assessment Program for Tankers”.

GL: Exporting German Precision

Mechanical engineer Till Braun of Germanischer Lloyd is passionate about precision. "If I was building a boat, any boat, I would want to have a classification society involved," he says. Till, Project Manager for the society’s Diesel Engines and Emissions Department, is charged with certifying that engines meet the Rules for Diesel Engines of GL. The IMO air quality requirements, known as Marpol Annex VI, are also handled by this department headed by Claus Hadler. But as one of 700 employees at the Germanischer Lloyd head office in Hamburg, he can be part of one of the teams that are called together to oversee the construction of a particular vessel.
