Piracy Quick Reference Guide Released by ABS

In support of the maritime community’s efforts to protect seafarers against acts of piracy, ABS has prepared a quick reference guide (QRG) to assist ships’ crews in implementing the industry’s “Best Management Practices for the Protection of Seafarers from Somali Based Piracy,” commonly referred to as BMPs. Designed specifically for onboard use, the QRG summarizes the recently published version 4 of the BMPs in a user-friendly format that can assist the Master and the Ship Security Officer in preparing the vessel for transit through a high-risk area. It also identifies actions to take should the vessel and its crew be attacked. “This Guide is another tool ship operators can use against the menace of piracy and hijacking” says Hemant Juneja, ABS Director of Management Systems Certification.

K-Sea Achieves ABS HSQE Certification

(East Brunswick, NJ) K-Sea Transportation Partners L.P. announced today that it has successfully completed the ABS HSQE certification process for all of its locations and operating divisions. K-Sea is the first U.S. flag tug and barge operator to achieve ABS HSQE certification, according to ABS. The company's management system meets the standards of the ISM Code, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. In addition, K-Sea continues to maintain its AWO Responsible Carrier Program certification.

ABS Certifies Container Giant Evergreen To ISPS Code With Issuance of ISSC

ABS has certified the first Evergreen Marine Corporation (Taiwan) Ltd. containership to the IMO’s International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code) The International Ship Security Certificate (ISSC) is the first of what is expected to be a fleet-wide conformance to the Code’s provision well in advance of the July 2004 implementation date. The ISSC was issued by ABS to Evergreen’s 1,164 teu, Hong Kong flag container ship the MV Uni Accord. According to Capt. First Bahamas Flag VLCC Awarded ISSC From ABS

The diversified international shipping group TESMA (Tschudi & Eitzen Ship Management Alliance) with its network of alliance partners servicing more than 80 vessels with full technical management and crew management support has become the latest organization to seek ABS certification and issuance of the International Ship Security Certificate (ISSC) to conform to the IMO’s International Ship and Port Facility Code (ISPS Code). ABS Audits Univan Tanker

Hong Kong based Univan Shipmanagement becomes the latest organization to achieve certification from class society ABS in order to meet the IMO’s International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Code in preparation for the July 2004 implementation date. Univan Ship Management and its sister company Pacific Marine, together manage a diverse fleet of over one hundred vessels comprising tankers, bulk carriers, pure car carriers, chemical tankers, container carriers, general cargo vessels, reefers, supply vessels and woodchip carriers.
