IMO Training Event at Libyan Port

International Maritime Organization (IMO) maritime security training is underway for Libyan port facility security officers, managers and designated authority officials (30 April – 4 May). The workshop, delivered entirely in Arabic, aims to assist the Libyan Government in enhanced security risk assessments and controls on maritime transport through its territory. It is the first IMO maritime security workshop for Libya since the country's civil war. Twenty officers in charge of port security from ports across the country are attending, including five from the national committee in charge of oversight of compliance in the country. Africa Develops Solutions for Maritime Security

Work to address maritime security challenges in Africa’s major maritime zones is underway at a regional workshop in Victoria, Seychelles (19-23 March). Over 60 maritime security professionals from more than 30 States are attending the  Africa Center for Strategic Studies (ACSS) event, which is designed to emphasize whole-of-Africa solutions to the maritime security challenges faced in the Gulf of Guinea, the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean, and the Horn of Africa. IMO for Spreading Cyber Security

Cyber security awareness on board ships plays an important role in ensuring the safety and security of shipping around the globe. International Maritime Organization (IMO) has issued Guidelines on maritime cyber risk management, in addition to a resolution on Maritime Cyber Risk Management in Safety Management Systems – adopted by the Organization's Maritime Safety Committee in June this year. Trinidad and Tobago: Focus on Security Drills and Exercises

International Maritime Organization (IMO) is conducting an Advanced Drills and Exercises Workshop for inspectors and officers responsible for port security in Trinidad and Tobago. The training, underway in Port of Spain (14-17 April), is focusing on the key IMO instrument for enhancing the security of ships and port facilities – the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. Andrew Garrad Awarded CBE in New Year’s Honours List

Dr Andrew Garrad, who retired from DNV GL on 23 December 2016, has been awarded a CBE – Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire – in the 2017 New Year’s Honours List. The CBE rewards contributions to the arts and sciences as well as work with charitable and welfare organisations. In 1984, Andrew co-founded Garrad Hassan (GH) in Bristol. It grew to become the world’s largest renewable energy consultancy, employing 1,000 people in 29 countries. He became President of GL Garrad Hassan after Germanischer Lloyd (GL) and Garrad Hassan merged in 2009. He ran the new company until 2012, when he became Chairman. After the merger of DNV and GL, Andrew became a member of the DNV GL – Energy Supervisory Board on the invitation of former Group President and CEO, Henrik Madsen.

Andrew Garrad to Retire from DNV GL

Dr. Andrew Garrad, the co-founder of Garrad Hassan, has announced he will retire from DNV GL on December 23, 2016. Following the merger between DNV and GL Garrad Hassan two years ago, Andrew ceased to play an active operational role in the company, but remained associated with DNV GL, as advisor, as Chairman of Bristol’s year as European Green Capital (which DNV GL sponsored) and as President of the European Wind Energy Association 2013-2014. He co-founded Garrad Hassan in 1984 and became President of GL Garrad Hassan after Germanischer Lloyd (GL) and Garrad Hassan merged in 2009. He ran the new company until 2012, when he became Chairman.

Training Workshop to Boost Tunisia’s Maritime Security Legislation

International Maritime Organization (IMO)  is assisting Tunisia with the development of its maritime security legislation with a training workshop, taking place in the country’s capital of Tunis (30 November – 1 December). Participating in the event are Tunisian Government officials, particularly legal experts responsible for implementing security measures set out in the IMO instruments SOLAS Chapter XI-2 and the ISPS Code. In reviewing the current legislation in place, participants are able to identify specific areas of concern and consider legislative or regulatory strategies to address those issues – thereby helping to strengthen governance, meet ISPS Code standards and elevate ship and port security laws and regulations to prevent security incidents.

IMO Leads Table Top Security Exercise in Tanzania

International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s whole of government approach to maritime security, as an enabler for sustainable development of the blue economy, is being played out in the latest maritime security table-top exercise. The exercise in Tanga, United Republic of Tanzania (9-10 November) is highlighting the need for a unified approach to implementation of maritime security measures, with particular reference to IMO’s SOLAS chapter XI-2 and ISPS Code. During the exercise, participants from a range of Government agencies, including the port sector, are confronted with various threats and challenges to maritime security, involving policy decisions, crisis/emergency management and response.

Supporting Maritime Security in East Asia

Improving maritime security through surveillance monitoring and communication systems is on the agenda at an IMO seminar in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (24-27 October). The event is supporting senior officials from ten east-Asian coastal states, with a wide range of responsibilities surrounding maritime surveillance monitoring and communications, coastal and port security to gain a deeper understanding of practical measures in these fields. Security challenges such as piracy and armed robbery, terrorist fighters, organized crime and mixed migration are being discussed, as well as the maritime communication and ship tracking and monitoring systems, such as AIS, LRIT, coastal radar, monitoring control and surveillance systems.

Djibouti Maritime Contingency Planning Exercise

A national table top exercise on maritime contingency planning was conducted in Djibouti (9-10 November), as part of a series of events leading up to the official opening of the Djibouti Regional Training Centre on Thursday (12 November). The aim of the exercise was to improve procedures and policies when faced with complex maritime security incidents. The table top exercise follows the successful model of table top exercises carried out in west and central Africa and is the first of a planned series in east Africa. Some 24 participants from relevant government departments and agencies participated in the exercise, which was intended to stimulate discussion and demonstrate the need for co-operation amongst government departments and agencies.

VIKING, NK Group Join Forces

Leading Danish marine and fire safety equipment and servicing provider VIKING Life-Saving Equipment has signed a multi-year global servicing agreement with NK Group, a major Korean supplier of firefighting systems and related equipment, laying the foundations for a strong business alliance between the two companies. According to the agreement, VIKING will become NK’s preferred service provider, carrying out marine fire servicing and sourcing original spare parts for the Korean company’s customers around the world. VIKING’s technicians have been specially trained in NK Group’s systems, in accordance with the IMO’s MSC.1/Circ.1432 revised guidelines, and have gained access to support and technical data directly from the new alliance partner.

DNV GL, N-KOM to Partner on LNG Initiatives

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed today between DNV GL and Qatar’s premier shipyard Nakilat-Keppel Offshore & Marine (N-KOM) to promote liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel within the maritime and offshore industry. The signing ceremony took place during DNV GL’s 150th anniversary celebrations in Dubai, at which N-KOM’s CEO Chandru Rajwani and Dr. Henrik Madsen, DNV GL’s Group President and Chief Executive Officer, signed the memorandum. Norway’s Prime Minister Erna Solberg visited DNV GL Høvik yesterday, September 16. Group President & CEO Henrik Madsen was host. “The Prime Minister was both enthusiastic and interested in DNV GL’s views on climate-friendly technologies in the industries we serve. We hope that our input on technological opportunities will be useful in the Norwegian government's work aimed at promoting a greener economy,” said Henrik Madsen when the hour long visit was over. As well as the Prime Minister herself, Norway’s Minister of Climate and Environment, Tine Sundoft, participated in the meeting.

DNV GL, MPA Collaborate in Maritime R&D

The signing ceremony took place at the DNV GL 150th anniversary celebrations, in the presence of Mr Lui Tuck Yew, Singapore’s Minister for Transport and Mr Borge Brende, Norway’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.

DNV GL and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) today to promote research and development (R&D) and innovation in the maritime industry. The signing ceremony took place at the DNV GL 150th anniversary celebrations, in the presence of Lui Tuck Yew, Singapore’s Minister for Transport, and Borge Brende, Norway’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. Nor-Shipping Clean Ship, Next Generation Ship Awards

Nor-Shipping has released names of the winners of the 2011 Clean Ship and Next Generation Ship Awards. The winners were announced today at the Nor-Shipping Opening Conference on May 24, 2011.
