Overboard Containership Crewmember Missing in the Port of Savannah

Helicopter and boat crews are scouring the Port of Savannah in search of a crewmember who fell overboard from a containership in the Georgia seaport on Tuesday.The U.S. Coast Guard said its watchstanders at Sector Charleston were notified at approximately 3 a.m., Tuesday by Georgia Ports Authority that a 70-year-old man was missing from the Maersk Tukang.The crewmember did not resurface after falling into the water from a gangway while boarding the Singapore-flagged ship, a Coast Guard spokesperson told MarineLink.The Coast Guard said it has deployed a HH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew from Air Station Savannah and a 29-foot Response Boat-Small crew from Station Tybee Island to search for the missing man.Crews from Department of Natural Resources…

Johan Röstin Resigns as CEO of ForSea

ForSea (formerly HH Ferries Group),  the operator linking Denmark and Sweden via Helsingør and Helsingborg, announced that Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Johan Röstinwill be stepping down from his position.“It has been a privilege to lead ForSea for almost three years. Dubai Intros Floating Solar Power Plants

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has issued a request for proposal (RFP) to appoint consultants to study, develop and construct floating solar photovoltaic plants in the Arabian Gulf."This is a new and innovative initiative by DEWA to use solar power that supports the objectives of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 (DCES 2050) to diversify the energy mix in Dubai, to make the Emirate a global hub for clean energy and green economy, and provide 75% of Dubai's total power output from clean energy by 2050," said a press release from the authority.The consultancy services include a feasibility study, the technical requirements for a floating solar photovoltaic plant…

Coast Guard Responding to Vessel Adrift in Gulf of Mexico

The Coast Guard is responding to a vessel adrift in the Gulf of Mexico approximately 80 nautical miles south of Cape San Blas, Florida, Wednesday.Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a report at approximately 2 p.m. from crewmembers aboard a NOAA ship, the Gordon Gunter, that a 30-foot white sailboat named My Time appeared to be floating adrift.Members aboard the Gordon Gunter reported that the My Time appeared to have electronics operating, sails stowed, and did not respond to radio calls or the ship’s horn.

HH Ferries Launches Battery-powered Passenger Vessels

Swedish HH Ferries Group has inaugurated the two ferries Aurora and Tycho Brahe as the world’s largest battery-powered passenger ferries on the route between Helsingborg, Sweden and Helsingör, Denmark.A press release from the owner of the ferry route which is marketed under the trademark Scandlines Helsingborg-Helsingör quoted Johan Röstin, CEO as saying: “Today’s official inauguration marks a milestone for HH Ferries Group’s green strategy. Search Called off for Cruise Passenger off New Jersey

The U.S. Coast Guard has called off a search for a woman who went missing from the Queen Mary 2 cruise ship off the coast of New Jersey over the Christmas holiday weekend, a spokesman said on Wednesday. The 74-year-old passenger was reported missing in the early hours of Friday about 100 nautical miles (185 km) southeast of Atlantic City, said Petty Officer David Micallef. It was not immediately clear how the woman disappeared from the Caribbean-bound ship, which is operated by Cunard Cruise Line, a unit of Carnival Corp.

ABB to Power Emission-free Electric Ferries

ABB’s project to convert two HH Ferries’ vessels into the world’s largest emission-free ferries is gathering pace after Öresund Dry Docks was selected to carry out the work. M/F Tycho Brahe and M/F Aurora will both be fitted with 4.16 MW of batteries and the containers with the battery racks will be lifted on board in February 2017. The dry-docking of the first vessel, Tycho Brahe, will begin in April and it will start operating as a fully electric ferry immediately when work is completed. Aurora will undergo the same process in October 2017. This highly innovative project also includes the installation of four fully automated shore-side charging arms and these are currently under construction in ABB´s factories.

Mwani Qatar, Milaha Team-up to Manage Hamad Port

HE Minister of Transport and Communications Jassim Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti, Chairman of Qatar Ports Management Company (Mwani Qatar) and Sheikh Ali bin Jassim bin Mohammad Al-Thani, Chairman of Qatar Navigation (Milaha), today witnessed the signing of an agreement between Mwani Qatar and Milaha to establish a new company, QTerminals, to manage Hamad Port. As per the agreement, the new company will be co-owned by Mwani Qatar; 51%, and Milaha; 49%, and will manage operations at Hamad Port as an independent company with its own board of directors, executives and staff. The deal was signed by Mwani Qatar CEO Captain Abdulla Al Khanji and Milaha President & CEO Abdulrahman Essa Al-Mannai.

PBES Lithium Energy Storage for HH Ferries

Plan B Energy Storage (PBES) said it has secured the energy storage supply contract for the two largest battery-powered ferries in the world. Each of the two Scandlines Helsingborg-Helsingör ferries will have 4.16 MWh batteries to provide power for primary propulsion. The fully electric ferries will carry their part of more than 7.4 million passengers and 1.9 million vehicles annually with zero emissions. Agthia Signs 25-year Lease in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi Ports and Agthia Group PJSC have signed a lease agreement aimed at expanding the group’s existing Grand Mills Flour and Animal Feed facilities at Zayed Port. The new agreement was signed by Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, Chief Executive Officer of Abu Dhabi Ports and Iqbal Hamzah, Chief Executive Officer of Agthia Group at Abu Dhabi Ports headquarters. The contract between the two parties incorporates a 25-year agreement for a 85,700m2 plot of land, which when fully developed by Agthia will include dedicated bulk grain silos, logistics warehousing and onsite bagging facilities.

ABB to Power Emission-free Electric Ferries

ABB informs it will supply the complete power and propulsion systems for two HH Ferries Group vessels to become the world´s largest emission-free electric ferries. The modernizations utilize turnkey ABB solutions including batteries, an energy storage control system and Onboard DC Grid technology. At both ends of the route ABB will supply the first automated shore-side charging stations using an ABB industrial robot, to optimize the connection time and therefore maximize the charging period.

US Ramps up Military Presence in the Philippines

U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Thursday that U.S. troops and military equipment would be sent on regular rotations in the Philippines and that the two countries had started joint patrols in the South China Sea as China increasingly asserts its territorial claims. The initiatives are designed so that the United States does not increase its permanent footprint in its former colony, but they demonstrate that the two countries are increasing security cooperation amid joint concerns over China's actions in the region's disputed waterways. Countries across the region have expressed concern over China's activities, but the broader American military presence was not meant to provoke conflict with the Chinese, Carter said.

Coast Guard Vessel Capsizes During Rescue Mission

U.S. Coast Guard Station Jones Beach crewmembers swam to shore after their rescue boat capsized in rough waters near East Rockaway Inlet, today. At approximately 2 a.m., Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound Command Center received an urgent distress call from the 76-foot scallop fishing vessel, Carolina Queen III, that had been taking on water with seven mariners aboard. Shortly after, the master reported the vessel was under control and had run aground near the East Rockaway Inlet. Coast Guard Station Jones Beach launched a 25-foot Response Boat Small to assist. The inlet water produced 10- to 12-foot waves and the vessel capsized. The five crewmembers aboard swam safely to shore. The Coast Guard vessel ran aground and is currently secured on the beach.

Morocco, Indonesia Ratify BWM Convention

Morocco and Indonesia have become the latest nations to ratify the Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention, an international measure adopted in 2004 for environmental protection that requires ships to have procedures in place for ballast water management in order to help prevent the spread of harmful and invasive aquatic species.
