Stena Line Plans to Launch 'Fossil-free' Ships Before 2030

Swedish ferry company Stena Line said it plans to put two battery-powered vessels into service by 2030. The new RoPax ferries, which will operate without the use of fossil fuels, are part of the company's wider effort to reduce its environmental footprint.The news was revealed in Gothenburg on Thursday by Stena Lines CEO Niclas Mårtensson during a press conference announcing the Tranzero Initiative, a collaborative project aiming to accelerate the transition to fossil-free fuels in the transport sector.

Rapido Gee: 42m Utility Vessel Delivered

Rapido Gee, a 42m steel monohull utility vessel, has been delivered and is currently in transit to the Middle East. The vessel will be operated by Rashied Marine Services in the service of offshore platforms. Designed by Incat Crowther and built by Strategic Marine, Rapido Gee is a further development of the design used for the 10 vessel fleet of Infield Utility Vessels delivered by the shipbuilder. In response to calls for construction simplicity, Incat Crowther reengineered the vessel with mild steel used in the hull in place of the original high tensile steel.

The Forum looked at a broad spectrum of topics concerning container shipping including: stowage and lashing, the potential for LNG vessels and bunkering, trends in the liner markets, high tensile steel and thick materials for ship building, pilotage and maneuvering XXL container ships in the Hamburg harbor and the advantages of having an Emergency Response Service. Some 50 representatives from the container industry met with GL experts at the Container Ship Forum, to hear the presentations and participate in informal discussions.

Ever Lambent, the first L-type containership in the Evergreen Line fleet.

Ever Lambent Named in Korea. Ever Lambent, the first L-type containership in the Evergreen Line fleet, was christened by Evergreen Group Chairman and founder Dr. Chang Yung-fa at the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard. The ceremonial rope cutting for the new 8,452-TEU vessel was performed by Mrs. Lee Yu-mei. The ceremony was attended by dignitaries from Taiwan and abroad. Ever Lambent, meaning shining or sparkling, is 334 meters in length, 45.8 meters wide, with 942 reefer plugs and a draft of 14.2 meters. The vessel can cruise at a speed up to 24.5 knots.

CMA CGM Group's Environmental Initiatives

The CMA CGM Group has just acquired another 18,000 new units, bringing its eco-container fleet to nearly 140,000 teus. For many years, the Group has attempted to minimize its impact on the environment through the following initiatives. Since 2005, the Group has been offering containers with bamboo floors. The result of a collaboration between CMA CGM and one of its main customers, these containers meet two objectives: to limit the use of wood from primary forest and to improve the technical qualities of the containers. Today, more than 10% of the Group’s fleet is equipped with this type of flooring. What’s more, the Group is currently testing new synthetic resin flooring.

The Aframax design has two independent engine rooms, power supply systems and steering gear, increased hull scantlings, reduced high tensile steel content, duplicated navigation equipment with off-track monitoring and full inerting of all ballast spaces. Crankshaft Care Key to Vessel Profitability

Mark van Schaick Marine Services is a relatively new company, based in Schiedam (Port of Rotterdam) specializing in crankshaft repair, repair of engine and industrial parts, technical consultancy, and marine and industrial spare parts. The company has capacity at its workshop for grinding crankshafts up to 20 ft. (6 m) on a lathe built by Naxos Union. As a result of a co-operation with Mitchell Shackleton in the U.K., crankshafts up to 39.5 ft. (12 m) can be repaired. Every possible kind of crankshaft can be checked, ground, polished, straightened, hardchrome-plated and hardchrome-ground. If a client requests, the company will undergo inspection by certification and classification societies. Repairs can also be carried out on turbine parts, engine blocks, connecting rods and pistons.

Landmark LNG Carrier Launched by IZAR

To great fanfare, Iñigo Tapias, the new 138,000 cu. m. liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier was launched on January 29 by IZAR's Sestao yard in Bilbao. The ship — standing in testament to the 1,213 workers at Sestao who physically made the ship a reality as well as the underlying strength of the IZAR company — is a highly significant one for many reasons, both technical and business. The 933-ft. (284.4-m), 19.5 knot ship embodies the hopes of a shipbuilding nation that is seeking to re-establish its presence in the LNG niche that it has not occupied for more than three decades, as the production of gas ships generally lays in the hands of Far East builders today.

Wind Power Comes of Age

Europe's fledgling offshore wind power industry has produced an order for an entirely new breed of vessel designed to transport and position wind turbines. U.K.-based engineering firm Mayflower Energy has contracted one such vessel from Shanhaiguan Shipyard in northern China on the strength of emerging demand for alternative, 'clean' energy sources. U.K. government plans call for 1,300 new 2-MW offshore turbines to be brought on stream over the next 10 years, and other littoral European countries have formulated large-scale projects for wind power generation systems. The perceived environmental acceptability of harnessing wind power for electricity generation is a strong motivator for the evident political approbation.

Payload Pivotal to Fast Sealift Ship

While catamaran and multi-hull vessel technology is increasingly being explored for its potential in high-speed military and logistical support applications, Rolls-Royce has unveiled a proposal for a fast naval sealift ship based on a monohull RoPax ferry design. The impulse for developing a vessel type with that rare combination of exceptional speed and relatively high payload capacity originates from the changing emphasis in military support requirements, not least the deployment of rapid response forces to distant areas at short notice. The project has also been driven by a general trend towards faster combatants and the complementary need for a faster speed of back-up and replenishment. The Rolls-Royce proposal entails a 4,000-dwt vessel of 581 ft.
