Green Ferry Refit is First of Its Kind in Canada

A newly retrofitted electric ferry is the first in Canada to be powered completely by a zero-emissions, lithium-ion power and propulsion system containing no diesel fuel components.In 2018, PortsToronto issued a request for expression of interest (RFEOI) to reduce air and noise emissions from its 96-foot Marilyn Bell I, used for transporting passengers, vehicles and supplies the very short distance (90-second trips) to and from Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport on Toronto Island.St. Catharines-based marine electrical engineering firm Canal Marine & Industrial Inc.

The maritime industry is undergoing a massive shift as vessels transform into sophisticated sensor hubs, generating data and connecting through satellites in an expanding interconnected web. To enable the uptake of these systems and unlock the associated efficiencies, DNV GL is launching a new chapter to its rules for ship classification: Digital Features. The new chapter was launched with three new notations (D-INF, DDV, REW) on October 28 and will enter into force on January 1, 2021.

Volvo Penta, Danfoss Editron Power Hybrid CTVs

A pair of hybrid-electric crew transfer vessels (CTV) being built for Danish operator MHO&Co will be powered by propulsion systems manufacturer Volvo Penta and electrification specialist Danfoss Editron.The 35-meter CTVs were designed by MHO&Co in cooperation with Incat Crowther in the U.K. and Australia and are being constructed at the Afai Southern Shipyard in China for delivery in 2021.Volvo Penta marine gensets will help power these vessels – the electric propulsion power for the driveline will come from five variable speed Volvo D8 gensets.

Port of Antwerp Orders Two Tugs from Damen

Damen Shipyards Group said it has been awarded a contract by the Port of Antwerp to deliver two IMO Tier III compliant RSD Tugs 2513 following "an intensive tender process". The compact ship-handling tugs each offer 70 tonnes bollard pull. The azimuth driven RSD Tugs 2513 has two bows, which means high performance in both bow and stern assisting operations. As a result of the always bow first approach, Damen has been able to incorporate a higher freeboard than would usually be possible on a tug of this size – meaning no water on deck…

Tech File: Automating Ballast Ops When Installing BWMS

Installing ballast water treatment systems to comply with new regulations will require owners to automate ballast operations on board their vessels or barges. Retrofitting ballast water treatment systems generally requires modifications to the existing ballast systems. Many older vessels have remote operated valves, but no automation of the ballast system. EMI has been working with parent company W&O to provide blue water barges with innovative solutions to add automation functionality to their fleet.

Fusing its decades of experience within the development of in-house GNSS and inertial technology, Kongsberg has created a cutting-edge integrated solution for DP reference applications. DPS i2 and DPS i4 are fully scalable DP reference solutions that improve operational efficiency and safety for high-precision applications. The new integrated solution has been in operation aboard the OSV Bourbon Arctic in Northern Norway for the past six months. DPS i2 and DPS i4 utilize Kongsberg’s motion gyro compass (MGCTM) and motion reference unit (MRUTM) technology.

An Engine Oil Goes the Distance

An inspection of one of two main engines on a U.S. inland waterways vessel revealed that ExxonMobil’s Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40 diesel engine oil provided outstanding protection and cleanliness for a Cummins KTA38 marine diesel main engine after nine years of continuous use. The engine had accumulated 21,782 running hours with an initial fill of Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40 engine oil. Mobil SignumSM oil analysis was used to closely monitor the health of the engine throughout this period, with support from the ExxonMobil field engineering team.

(HMI) informs it has acquired surface preparation and preservation company Anchor Sandblasting and Painting, Inc., in a move that further expands its range of services now including sandblasting, painting and other surface preparation and preservation services. Eaton is expanding its product portfolio for the marine and shipbuilding industry with its SmartWire-DT technology, certified by DNV GL. The power management company’s SmartWire-DT products have received type approval from the largest classification organization in the world for integration in control cabinets with protection rating IP20. Wärtsilä Control Systems for 3 New Containerships

Wärtsilä's Nacos Platinum Integrated Navigation Automation Control System has been selected for a series of three 'mega-class' container vessels being built for French shipowner CMA CGM at the HHIC-Phil yard in Subic Bay, Philippines. The contract with Wärtsilä was signed in August. The Wärtsilä Nacos Platinum platform is based on an Ethernet-based network and covers all aspects of integrated bridge and machinery monitoring and control systems. It combines all relevant navigation and automation tasks under a single HMI (Human Machine Interface) umbrella. The system uses modern ring topology and provides the flexibility to navigate, control and monitor the vessel from different multifunctional operator stations.
