BV Issues AiP for World's Largest LNG Carrier

During Gastech 2023 in Singapore, Bureau Veritas (BV) formally issued its Approval in Principle (AiP) to the CSSC Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group for a new LNG carrier design. Light Structures AS was contracted by China Merchants Hoi Tung company to deliver and install Hull Stress Monitoring Systems for eight newbuild LNG carriers. The vessels are owned by two separate consortia for operations in the Middle East and are being built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding for delivery through 2024 to 2026.Light Structures will provide hull monitoring data to the LNG vessels using the standardized SENSFIB Global system. While essentially a Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) product, SENSFIB Global installations are always configured according to vessel design.

China is making fast inroads in the market for newbuild liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers as local and foreign shipowners turn to its shipbuilders for the specialty vessels because long dominant yards in South Korea are fully booked. France-based LNG carrier tank designer GTT has received an order from the Chinese shipyard Hudong Zhonghua (HZ) for the tank design of the first four LNG carriers for the Qatargas project on behalf of the ship-owner MOL.GTT will design the tanks of these four new LNG carriers with a total LNG tank capacity of 174,000 m3 per ship and will be fitted with the membrane containment system developed by GTT.The delivery of the vessels is scheduled for the third quarter of 2024 and the second quarter of 2025. GTT did not share financial details of the tank design contract with HZ.

CNOOC Awards $2.4B Contracts for Construction of 12 LNG Carriers

China National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC) has awarded 16 billion yuan ($2.42 billion) worth of contracts to build 12 liquefied natural gas tankers, the largest of their kind in the country, the company said on Thursday.China is the world's largest buyer of the super-chilled gas, while CNOOC is the country's largest importer of the fuel and among the state majors leading a drive to expand their LNG fleet to meet rising import needs and facilitate fast-growing global trade.

Japanese shipping and logistics firm NYK has signed a long-term time-charter contract with CNOOC Gas and Power Singapore Trading & Marketing Pte. Ltd. for six liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, in addition to a shipbuilding contract for the vessels with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co. Ltd.This is NYK's first long-term time-charter contract for an LNG carrier with CNOOC. Wärtsilä was selected to supply a broad scope of solutions for new LNG-fuelled container ships ordered by CMA CGM, on its latest series comprises 12 container vessels to be built in China. Six 13,000 TEU container vessels are being built at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) CO. Ltd, with the other six 15,000 TEU container vessels under construction at the Jiangnan Shipyard (Group) Co., Ltd. The Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for delivery to the yards commencing in 2022, and the first of the 12 vessels is expected to be launched in Q3 2023.

(HZ) for the tank design of a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier on behalf of the leasing entity of the Chinese CSSC Group.As part of this order, GTT will design the tanks of the vessel which will offer a capacity of 174 000 m3. The tanks will be fitted with the GTT NO96 L03+ membrane containment system.The vessel will be delivered in the first quarter of 2024.
