Crew Winched to Safety Near Skegness

Two people have been winched to safety after their vessel suffered engine failure and began to take on water, the U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency reported. The call came in as a Mayday to Humber Coastguard Operation Centre at 7:36 a.m. (BST) today from the Dolphin of Rhu, north of the windfarm between Skegness and the River Humber. Calculating the boat’s position had to be done using VHF direction finding because there seemed to be no GPS and two lifeboats – Humber and Skegness were tasked to find the vessel. Other vessels on the scene also came in to help the search. It was also decided to call in the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter from Humberside because of the potentially serious nature of the incident.

Crew of Stricken Fishing Vessel Found Unharmed

The crew of a stricken fishing vessel, seemingly washed up on the beach at Chapel St Leonards, are safe and well, Humber Coastguard reported.   Skegness and Chapel coastguards, Skegness RNLI inshore lifeboats and a rescue helicopter were all tasked to the 18-foot coble reported to the Coastguard as washed up on the beach.   It later transpired the boat had capsized while being launched, throwing the two crew into the water. The crew were found further along the beach, wet and cold but otherwise unhurt.   Graham Dawson, Watch Manager at Humber Coastguard said, “The crew of this boat were found in time to stand down the major rescue resources we had tasked.”

Search Continues for Trawler Crew

Humber Coastguard is coordinating the search for the missing skipper and four crew of the trawler, Ocean Way. The trawler was last heard from about 100 miles east of the Farne Islands. The emergency beacon from the vessel began transmitting yesterday and the coastguard has since been trying to contact the skipper and have also been broadcasting mayday relay messages which have been requesting all shipping to look out for the missing crew. A RAF rescue helicopter on scene found two people alive in the water and winched them to safety. The Norwegian helicopter Rescue 1 will arrive on scene to relieve the RAF rescue helicopter. Mike Puplett, Humber Coastguard Watch Manager said yesterday, “We will continue searching for as long as necessary.

Man Winched from Stricken Yacht in North Sea

A man has been rescued after his yacht ran into difficulty 28 nautical miles north of Cromer. Humber Coastguard received a distress alert from the 22-foot yacht just after 8 a.m. this morning. The person on board reported that he was taking on water, his sails were in tatters and the engine had failed. The wind at the time was gusting up to 46mph, with a 3.5-meter swell. The search and rescue helicopter from RAF Wattisham was sent to the scene, along with the RNLI’s Cromer and Humber all-weather lifeboats. A vessel in the area at the time also went to help and stood by the yacht until rescue units arrived. The man was then winched on board the helicopter and taken to hospital to be checked over as he is showing signs of suffering from hypothermia.

2 Rescued Near Humber Bridge by Maritime & Coastguard Agency

Humber Coastguard received a call just after 10am this morning reporting two people in the water after their powered canoe had capsized just west of the Humber Bridge. The Hull Coastguard Rescue Team, Humber Rescue Inshore Lifeboat and the police all attended and found one of the boat’s occupants clinging to his companion, who was the only one wearing a lifejacket. The RAF search and rescue helicopter from Leconfield lifted the very cold canoeists aboard; they were put ashore and taken to Hull Royal Infirmary, where they were confirmed as well. Humber Coastguard Watch Manager, Graham Dawson, said, "Anyone taking to the water should always wear their own properly maintained life jacket or buoyancy aid.

Missing Yorkshire Yachtsman Found in North Sea

A yachtsman from Yorkshire, reported missing has been found on his yacht in the North Sea, following an extensive search coordinated by Humber Coastguard. His 17ft yacht, Equinox, was approximately 80 miles east of Spurn Point (at the mouth of the Humber) and rescuers found him relatively quickly today, thanks to an emergency positioning beacon aboard his yacht which was activated. The 69-year-old’s family contacted the Coastguard on Thursday as they had become concerned for his safety. They had not heard from him since 4 July when he telephoned his son to tell him he was planning his passage home. His boat was last seen in the Kiel Canal, at Brunsbuttel, Germany.

Crew Rescued from Wind Farm Vessel Fire

A crewman has been airlifted to James Paget University Hospital this morning after a fire on board a 17-meter wind farm support vessel, Norfolk Tern, four nautical miles off Great Yarmouth, the U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency reported. Humber Coastguard said it received a call from the Norfolk Tern just after 8 a.m. reporting they had a fire in their starboard engine, which they managed to bring it under control, but one crewman was believed to be suffering the effects of breathing in too much smoke.

In the Philippines a large scale rescue of ferry passengers, on the other side of the world, a British fishing boat crew is airlifted to safety, and a man is plucked from rough seas off Aberdeen breakwater. A rescue team from Philippine Coast Guard search and rescue vessel, BRP EDSA II (SARV-002) evacuated 132 passengers from the MV Our Lady Of All Nation after the inter-island ferry ran aground at Danajon Bank, Bohol. The crew of the sinking 18-m fishing vessel RACHEL JAYNE lll  sent out a Mayday as they took to a liferaft 26 miles ENE of Tynemouth Piers.

NE England Night-time Beach Wader Disappears

UK's Humber Coastguard has been coordinating a search for a man seen walking in the sea in the dark near to Marsden Grotto, South Shields. A fisherman called 999 and spoke to Humber Coastguard just before 11pm last night, reporting that a man was in the water, but he soon disappeared from view. Maritime and Coastguard Agency informs that the Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team, the two RNLI lifeboats from Tynemouth were sent to the scene, along with the police helicopter and the search and rescue helicopter from RAF Boulmer. Despite the extensive search, nothing has yet been found.

Three Crewmen Rescued from Vessel Blaze

Three crewmen have been rescued off Lowestoft this afternoon after their vessel caught fire in the North Sea. Humber Coastguard coordinated the rescue operation after the crew abandoned the ECC Topaz 10 nautical miles east of the town. The vessel had been heading out to service a windfarm when the blaze struck just before 1 p.m. The crew, who were wearing lifejackets, managed to get into a liferaft while they waited to be rescued by the Search and Rescue helicopter from RAF Wattisham.

Windfarm Service Ship Burns, Sinks; Three Crewman Saved

Three crewmen have been rescued off Lowestoft this afternoon after their vessel caught fire in the North Sea, the Humber Coastguard reported. Humber Coastguard coordinated the rescue operation after the crew abandoned the ECC Topaz 10 nautical miles east of the town. The vessel had been heading out to service a windfarm when the blaze struck just before 1 pm. The crew, who were wearing lifejackets, managed to get into a liferaft while they waited to be rescued by the Search and Rescue helicopter from RAF Wattisham. The crew were winched to safety and airlifted to James Paget University Hospital at Great Yarmouth as a precaution. They aren’t believed to have suffered any serious injuries.

North Sea Ferry Blaze: 7 Airlifted to Hospital

Six crew members and a passenger have been airlifted to hospital after a fire on board the DFDS ferry 'MS King Seaways', while en route from North Shields to Amsterdam, approximately 30 miles off Flamborough Head on the north east coast of England. The UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency inform that the Humber Coastguard was contacted  by the MS King Seaways, which had 946 passengers and 127 crew on board. They reported that they had a fire in one of the passenger accommodation blocks, but it had been brought under control and was now out.

Crewman Missing from Cargo Vessel

At just after 7.30 pm this evening, Humber Coastguard were alerted by VTS Humber to a crewman falling overboard from a small cargo ship moored alongside on the River Trent. The MV Sea Melody was working ropes, when the crewman appeared to become entangled and was pulled overboard. He immediately disappeared from view. RAF Rescue Helicopter 128 from RAF Leconfield was immediately re-tasked from a previous incident, and was on scene quickly. The helicopter utilized his FLIR (Forward Looking Infra Red) camera to seek a heat source from the casualty. A Coastguard team from Hull was also tasked to the area to assist with the search. Although the helicopter searched extensively to his fuel endurance, and the Coastguard team searched the shore side and surrounds, nothing could be found.

Fishing Vessel in Collision with South Pier

At 6.30 a.m. today Tyne Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) reported to Humber Coastguard that the fishing vessel Grenaa Star had been in collision with South Pier, Tynemouth. The fishing vessel had begun taking in water and was in need of immediate assistance. Escorted by other local fishing vessels, and the Port of Tyne pilot launch Collingwood, the fishing vessel was able to beach itself on Little Haven Beach. Humber Coastguard requested that the two Tynemouth RNLI lifeboats launch and they have now transferred two salvage pumps to the vessel to deal with the ingress of water. Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team are also on scene and are keeping watch and reporting back to the Coastguard.

Divers Lost in Fog as Dive Boat Breaks Down

A UK dive boat’s malfunctioning GPS & engine breakdown were the cause of two divers being lost in fog near the wreck of the ship ‘Alster’. Humber Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre was called by a dive vessel at just after 1530 on a recent summer afternoon. They were told that the vessel’s engine and GPS had broken and it couldn’t find the two divers who were believed to be on the surface in black wets suits and marker buoys. The situation was not helped by thick fog that reduced visibility to 50 metres.

Crewman Airlifted after Tanker Fire off Whitby

A crewman was airlifted to a hospital after a fire on board a tanker approximately six nautical miles north east of Whitby. Humber Coastguard was contacted by the tanker just after 12:30 p.m. reporting that they were dealing with a fire in the engine room. A mayday relay was broadcast via Channel 16, and two vessels in the area at the time responded and went to the scene. The RNLI lifeboats from Whitby and Scarborough were also tasked, along with the search and rescue helicopter from RAF Leconfield. The injured crewman, one of 17 onboard, was winched on to the helicopter and flown to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. The fire is now out. Arrangements are currently being made to bring the tanker, which currently carries no cargo, into port. www.mcga.gov.uk

Timber-carrier Refloated After Fortnight on Beach

The 'MV Danio' has been successfully re-floated off the Farne Islands, off Northumberland, on the coast of NE England. Checks are still being made but so far there are no reports of any pollution, reports the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. At 04.30 on Saturday 16 March, the MV Danio reported to Humber Coastguard that they had run aground on the Farne Islands. Seahouses RNLI all-weather lifeboat attempted to tow the vessel off the rocks at high water but to no avail. Attempts to re-float the vessel were hampered by difficult weather conditions.

UK Crew Evacuated from Survey Rig

On April 19, at 03:24 Humber Coastguard received a call from the standby vessel DUTCH PEARL, reporting that the jack-up rig VAGANT had stuck fast on the sea bed and was being swamped by the rising tide. 19 crewmembers from the rig were swiftly evacuated to the DUTCH PEARL and MRCC Humber took coordination of the incident. Hartlepool RNLI all-weather lifeboat was launched to the scene and transferred 16 of the crew members to Teesport. Coastguard Rescue Teams from Hartlepool and Redcar were alerted to assist with reception of the evacuated casualties ashore. Three rig crew members remain on the standby vessel Dutch Pearl and intend to return to the rig at low tide to attempt to free her from the seabed.

Fishing Vessel and Tanker Collide

Humber Coastguard received a MAY DAY call from the 13 metre fishing vessel Aquarius reporting they were taking in water with 3 persons on board approximately 16 miles East of Amble. Aquarius reported that they had been involved in a collision moments earlier with the 56,000 Tonne Bahamian tanker Alpha Germania, which was in ballast and on passage to Teesport. Humber Coastguard requested the launch of RNLI Amble Lifeboat and the Rescue Helicopter from RAF Boulmer, which is standing by with Coastguard pumping equipment. A near by fishing vessel called Rejoice attended the scene and has secured a tow line to Aquarius which has lost all steering but is not sinking.

Royal Navy Divers Explode WWII Mine

Royal Navy divers have carried out a controlled explosion on a World War II mine netted by a fishing boat off the coast of Hartlepool. The two-man crew of the Hartlepool-registered Osprey reported the mine to coastguards on April 8. The town's lifeboat was scrambled to monitor the situation about two miles offshore until naval munitions experts could assess the situation. Humber Coastguard said a controlled explosion was the safest option. Coastguard officers put the vessel in contact with Explosives and Ordnance Division (EOD) divers who confirmed that the object was a World War II mine. (Source: BBC News)

MCA Reports Vessel Aground

On Monday, Humber Coastguard were advised by Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) Humber that the German registered 2,551 ton general cargo vessel ‘Urte’, with a cargo of scrap metal had gone aground at the entrance to the River Trent. The vessel, which had eight crew members and a pilot on board, sustained damage to the bow. A tug was on the scene by early Tuesday morning. The VTS Humber reported the situation had deteriorated, the vessel had taken a sixteen degree list and was taking water over the port quarter. Humber private rescue launched and took all personnel off and landed them at Blacktoft Jetty on the River Ouse. Hull Coastguard was also in attendance.
