New Autonomous Hydrographic Survey Vessel Design Unveiled

Boatbuilder SAFE Boats International on Monday introduced Merlin, a new 23-meter semi-displacement monohull autonomous hydrographic survey vessel design developed in collaboration with Mythos AI, Echo81, and World Marine Design.SAFE Boats has exclusive rights to build the design at its Tacoma, Wash. large-craft production facility. Merlin will be a Jones Act-compliant all-aluminum hull powered by a twin Volvo Penta D13 Hybrid-ready System with IPS. For a zero-emission power package, the Merlin can accommodate forward-thinking hydrogen technology supplied by Zero Emission Industries (ZEI).

Cairn Contracts Unique Hydrographic for Oil Spill Recovery

Unique Hydrographic Systems has been contracted by Cairn India for an Oil Spill Recovery project. The first of its kind project for Unique Hydrographic Systems will run over a period of three years until April 2016. The crux of this Tier 1 project includes the supply of oil spill recovery equipment from Lamor along with vehicles and a trained team of responders and supervisors for approximately 700 kilometers of hot crude oil pipeline from Barmer to Jamnagar. Mumbai-based Unique Hydrographic Systems (UHS) contracted to supply Seaflex air liftbags to Leighton Welspun. The total value of the project is INR 37,35,066 (approx. US$ 70,000). Seaflex is a specialist in marine air lift buoyancy bags and water load test weights. They provide products for two major areas: Air Lift Bags (ALBs) and Inflatable Buoyancy Units (IBUs) for the recovery of underwater objects and to provide underwater pipeline buoyancy and cable floatation. Dutch Navy to Get Kongsberg EN 250

After the successful delivery of two Kongsberg hydrographic systems for the HOV vessels, Simrad BV has now received an order for delivery of a Kongsberg EN 250 single beam echo sounder with spare parts and custom developed interface for connecting four 50 kHz transducers with special interfacing to the on-board computer systems. This special interface contains data information and indicate which transducer is connected to the echo sounder system. All over many years has Simrad BV developed special interfacing for several applications inside acoustical systems for the Royal Dutch Navy. The system was delivered October 2003.

News: 2004 Budget Proposal Raises Inland Ire

The record $2.2 trillion U.S. budget proposal is out, and, predictably, the political posturing and positioning for additional dollars has begun in earnest. This year's budget from the President, with its heavy emphasis on defense and homeland security, has outraged a broad spectrum of the inland waterways industry, based on comments delivered by influential organizations in the immediate aftermath of its release. The $2.2 trillion budget includes $380 billion for the nation's military, a $15 billion (4.2%) increase. The new budget provides $41 billion for total homeland security spending. Excluding Department of Defense spending, the budget includes $35 billion for homeland security, a $2.5 billion or 7.6% increase that more than doubles funding over the past two years.
