HMD's Ammonia-powered LPG Carrier Designs Earn DNV Approval

DNV has awarded HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard an approval in principle (AIP) for the design of ammonia dual fuel 45,000 m3 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers.The presentation took place at the HD Hyundai Global R&D Center (GRC) in Seongnam, Korea. CoolCo to Retrofit Boil-off Reliquefaction Units for Improved CII Performance

HD Hyundai Global Service, a ship service subsidiary of HD Hyundai Group, has announced that it has signed contracts with Cool Company (CoolCo), an owner and operator of LNG vessels, to retrofit five LNG carriers with reliquefaction units.The contract value is approximately US$10 million per vessel.A reliquefaction unit is a device used to re-liquefy the boiled off gas (BOG) generated during the operation of LNG cargo tanks, either returning the gas to the cargo tank or preventing natural evaporation using sub-cooled LNG.

LNG Carrier Sails from US to South Korea Using Autonomous Navigation

A 180,000-square-meter-capacity liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier is said to be the world's first large cargo ship to cross the Pacific using autonomous navigation.Built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in 2021 and delivered to SK Shipping in South Korea, the vessel Prism Courage is equipped with HiNAS 2.0, Level 2 autonomous navigation solution developed by Avikus, a subsidiary of HD Hyundai (former Hyundai Heavy Industries Group).According to Avikus, HiNAS 2.0 creates optimal routes and speeds based on Hyundai Global Service's Integrated Smartship Solution.

ABS Completes Decarbonization and Digitalization JDP with HHI and HGS

ABS and HHI Group Join Forces on D&D

ABS, Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and Hyundai Global Service (HGS) have agreed on a framework for the exchange of Digitalization and Decarbonization (D&D) concepts to apply to present and future designs. Intellian signed a strategic partnership  with Hyundai Global Service (HGS), a subsidiary of the shipbuilding company Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) group, on July 15 at Centum Science Park in Busan, Korea.As the first step of the cooperation, both companies will expand HGS’ innovative ‘Integrated Smart Ship (ISS)’ solution; a digital ecosystem for vessel and fleet management, incorporating a  data analysis platform. This solution supports optimal vessel operation and management and is expected to reduce fuel costs by over 6% per year.

Classification society Lloyd's Register and Hyundai Global Service (HGS) have announced a new collaboration that will deliver added value to the shipping industry through digital solutions, starting with the appraisal of HGS’s Smart Ship System as ‘Digital Class Ready’.LR will assess HGS’s Smart Ship System by applying its latest Digital Ship’s ShipRight Procedure and Digital Compliance Framework so that ship managers and operators using the system onboard ships can get class items credited remotely for selected items.HGS and LR will engage in live trials of the system, installed and operational on a ship, and test its readiness to comply with data-driven classification requirements.

HMM Intros Scrubber Installation Fund

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from Lloyd's Register (LR) for a very large gas carrier (VLGC) design capable of using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as fuel.LPG presents advantages over marine diesel oil (MDO) and heavy fuel oil (HFO) when a VLGC is able to utilize the LPG cargo on board as a fuel. However, safety issues need to be thoroughly examined particularly in relation to potential leaks of LPG in a confined space and the implications for ventilation.

The National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia (Bahri)  has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) Group to harness Big Data and technological innovation in the maritime industry. Hyundai Global Services Enters into Eco-friendly Ship Services Business with KSS Line

Hyundai Global Services (HGS), Hyundai Heavy Industries’ (HHI) newly spun-off company specializing in providing total marine services announced today it signed an MOU with KSS Line, a Korean shipping company, for entering into eco-friendly ship business. Under the MOU, two companies join forces to retrofit the medium-sized LPG carriers owned by KSS Line with Exhaust Gas Cleaning System. Ships equipped with the cleaning system will be able to meet the IMO’s sulfur emission cap of 0.5% even with bunker-c oil, cheaper than marine gas oil, and thus will significantly be able to lower fuel costs. From this month, the two companies operate a task force team that is conducting basic engineering of the system, and is scheduled to finalize detail engineering by the end of this year.

HMM May Hire Foreign CEO for Revival

Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) will start the process to appoint a new chief executive officer (CEO) when Hyundai Group loses control on Aug. 5, reports Korea Times quoting un-named industry sources. The challenged shipper will begin a new chapter in its 40-year history, breaking free from Hyundai Group and becoming a subsidiary of Korea Development Bank (KDB). KDB is bent on installing a new leadership at the shipping line and is open to hiring a foreign chief executive. To make a pool of candidates, the creditor reportedly appointed a number of executive search firms. Last week, KDB Chairman Lee Dong-geol suggested standards for appointment, saying it will not exclude "people who have no relation with HMM" including foreign experts.
