CSCL’s New Containership Sets Two World Records

The 19,000-teu CSCL newbuilding during sea trials

China Shipping Container Lines Co. Ltd. (CSCL) ran sea trials from October 17-20 on its newbuilding, CSCL Globe, the first vessel in a series of five 19,000-teu, 400-meter containerships. The vessel, reported to be the world’s largest containership, is also noteworthy for being powered by what is, physically, the largest engine ever constructed, a low-speed MAN B&W 12S90ME-C Mark 9.2 type. According to the engine builder, the two-stroke engine is rated at 69,720 kW at 84 rpm although has been de-rated to 56,800 kW. The new container vessel was constructed at Hyundai Heavy Industries, Ltd.

Höegh LNG - Takes delivery of the FSRU "Independence"

Höegh LNG has taken delivery of the "Independence", the second of the four newbuilt FSRUs that the Company has ordered from Hyundai Heavy Industries Ltd (HHI), on May 12. The "Independence" is under a long term charter to Klaipedos Nafta in Lithuania, which will commence no later than by the end of the year. In the interim, the Company will deploy the unit in the short term LNG market. Sveinung J.S. Støhle, President and CEO of HLNG, stated: "We are proud to have reached this significant milestone together with Klaipedos Nafta and HHI and expanded our current fleet of FSRUs to four vessels. The "Independence" represents the most advanced and efficient FSRU in the market, and plays a key role in giving Lithuania the energy infrastructure necessary to diversify its sources of natural gas".

Floating LNG Storage/Gasification Plant for Lithuanian Terminal

Höegh LNG signs FSRU agreement with Klaipedos Nafta in Lithuania Höegh LNG has entered into a ten year time charter for a floating LNG storage and regasification unit to be used as an LNG import terminal in Lithuania, subject to  formal approval by the shareholders of AB Klaipedos Naft which is controlled by the Lithuanian state.  Höegh LNG intends to use the second of the three new regasification vessels being built at Hyundai Heavy Industries Ltd. in South Korea for this agreement, which will commence in the second half of 2014.

Wärtsilä NSD Address Sulzer RTA84T Bedplate Fears

Citing overzealous trade reporting and seeking to set the record straight and ensure that accurate information is being disseminated, Wärtsilä NSD has issued a formal announcement regarding cracks in the bedplates of Sulzer RTA84T and RTA84T-B low-speed marine diesel engines. The company, concerned that reports had become alarmist and exaggerated, decided to present the details to the marine industry to set the record straight. Following is an excerpt from the announcement. CURRENT SITUATION: There are today 41 of the RTA84T and RTA84T-B engine types in service, all in VLCCs. The first began operation in 1994, and the longest running engines have individually accumulated up to more than 40,000 running hours. Of these, 11 engines have cracks in one or more of their bearing girders.

HHI and Transas Hand New Vessel Over to PRISCO

The New tanker Pavel Chernish built by Hyundai Heavy Industries Ltd as part of the 1599 – 1603 project, was handed over to the Primorsk Shipping Corporation (PRISCO). Pavel Chernish is a vessel of ice class 1A according to the DNV classification and fully complies with the requirements of Exxon Neftegaz Ltd, subsidiary of Exxon Mobile. The tankers are designed for oil transportation within the Sakhalin – 1 project. The second tanker of the series will be handed to PRISCO in the near future. The Hyundai Heavy Industries Shipyard will build a total of five vessels during the project. The Transas Group equipped these tankers with the new integrated navigation system, Hyundai-Transas Intelligent Bridge System (HTiBS).
