DNV has awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) to HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and its subsidiaries HD Hyundai Heavy Industry (HD HHI) and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) for their new hydrogen system.HD KSOE aims to complete the development of the hydrogen carrier technology that enables large-capacity hydrogen transportation and storage by around 2030.HD KSOE's new system utilizes boil-off gas from hydrogen transport for a hybrid propulsion system, integrating hydrogen dual-fuel engines and fuel cells.

Wilhelmsen Ship Management (WSM) has entered into a management agreement with Ireland-based Pardus Energy for their new building Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU).WSM, one of the world’s largest third-party ship manager with a portfolio of more than 450 vessels and 9200 active seafarers, will be providing ship management services for the new FSRU named “Turquoise”.The FSRU is a 170,000 CBM gas processing vessel, built at Hyundai Heavy Industry, South Korea. Hyundai Heavy Industry (HHI) Group, with the support of Lloyd's Register (LR), is responding to the increasing  interest in the development of the global supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG), following the introduction of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) NOx and SOx emission limitations, by being at the forefront of developing innovative ship designs. This month Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD), part of the HHI Group, will deliver of the world’s largest LNG-fuelled ship, a 50,000 dwt bulk carrier with a high manganese LNG fuel tank.

Regasifying and storing LNG offshore has allowed customers to import gas without committing to land-based infrastructure. The option also speeds up access to vast amounts of energy. “Wärtsilä focuses on completing the LNG value chain,” says Timo Koponen, Vice President, Flow and Gas Solutions, Wärtsilä. “It’s basically creating an alternative to pipeline gas. The end users vary, from industrial clients connected to smaller FSRUs – essentially an LNG carrier equiped by the addition of on-board storage and regas facilities – to large utilities. Last year, Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) ordered Wärtsilä seawater/propane based regasification modules for two FSRU customers, Höegh LNG and Gazprom. A bait for all types of consumers is expediency.

When the Dockwise Vanguard was conceived, Dockwise, part of the Boskalis Group, had a vision for a new market - transporting the world’s largest cargoes, including FPSOs (floating production storage and offloading vessels). It hasn’t taken the vessel, the largest heavy transport vessel in the world, long to prove its worth, as well as the feasibility of such a feat. The vessel has currently transported its first ship-shaped FPSO cargo, Bumi Armada’s Armada Intrepid, to South East Asia which also happens to be one of the three largest cargoes ever transported.

ABS, a provider of classification and technical services to the maritime industry, has been awarded a contract for the classification of two innovative 'Moss-type' LNG carriers to be built in Korea for Malaysia's Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas). The 150,200-m3 capacity ships will the largest Moss-type units ever built at Hyundai Heavy Industry's shipyard in Ulsan, Korea, featuring the latest technology to improve energy efficiency and operational reliability.

United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) have recently announced they will expand their fleet with new super-efficient container vessels. Constructed to DNV class, the designs have been optimized through a productive cooperation between FutureShip and Hyundai Heavy Industry (HHI). Setting its sights on competitive slot cost, UASC, one of the world’s fastest growing container carriers, has ordered five 14,000TEU vessels with six options and five 18,000TEU vessels with one option. Dynagas, the liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipping arm of the George Prokopiou shipping enterprises, has taken delivery of Arctic Aurora, the second of two ice-class membrane LNG tankers, during a ceremony at Hyundai Heavy Industry (HHI) Ulsan shipyard, Korea. The first, Yenisei River, was delivered yesterday. The 155,000 cbm (cubic meters) ships are fitted with GTT Mk III containment systems. Wilhelmsen Technical Solutions’ South Korean office will fulfil the orders for five LNG newbuildings at Hyundai Heavy Industry (HHI) for Greek owner Dynagas, delivering Nitrogen (N2) generator systems of 2 x 150 nominal cu. m. per hour @ 97%. These orders further improve Wilhelmsen Technical Solutions’ market penetration for LNG carriers and reinforce the competence and experience of the company in this fast-growing shipping segment. In total, the company has around 600 customer references for its inert gas systems worldwide.

Kongsberg Maritime is delighted to announce Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) number 3000 for its highly regarded propulsion control system, AutoChief C20. The FAT took place March 8th 2011 at Kongsberg Maritime Korea's facility in Busan, South Korea, with representatives from Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and a Lloyd's Register surveyor present. TTS has signed a contract with ship management firm Höegh Fleet Services to provide maintenance for 29 vessels. The deal is believed to be the biggest ever service contract for pure car/truck carrier (PCTC) RoRo equipment. The contract was signed in Oslo in late September 2007 by Höegh vice-president of purchasing Kristin Haugen and Dan Magnusson, TTS Ships Equipment’s service manager, and comes into effect January 1 2008. The contract, agreed by TTS’ Gothenburg office, provides for an extended maintenance agreement for the ships, and follows TTS’ successful design and supply of cargo access equipment for a series of PCTCs built for Höegh by Hyundai Heavy Industry, Gdynia Shipyard, Daewoo and Uljanic. Other ships are currently on order from Vinashin in Vietnam.

South Korean shipbuilders are profiting more than ever from selling high-value units such as offshore plants and liquid gas carriers, according to a Korea Times report. Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering has already won a record-high $7 billion in building orders this year. Such high performance was largely affected by the sales of four offshore oilrig units, which amounted to $1.9 billion in total. The company also has recorded steady sales of LNG carriers, capped with a $430-million order for a pair of LNG carriers from a Norwegian company last month. The LNG ship has become a lucrative business for shipbuilders, as a 145,000-cubic-meter carrier is now being sold for around $270 million, according to the report.
