Spanish Navy Ship Sent to Draw Up Maps Loses Its Way

A Spanish Navy ship tasked with updating nautical charts to make navigation safer got stranded on Thursday near the island of Ibiza in the Mediterranean, the Navy said.The vessel Malaspina was exploring an area of shallows to the west of the island and got stuck on one of them. Rescue teams have been sent to help remove the vessel from the ground, the Navy said in a statement."After an initial inspection... no structural damage can be seen," it said.

Fincantieri Delivers Costa Firenze to Costa Cruises

Carnival Corporation's Costa Cruises has taken delivery of the new cruise ship Costa Firenze designed and built by Fincantieri at its Marghera shipyard.With 135,500 gross tonnage and a capacity of more than 5,200 guests, the Costa Firenze is part of a €6 billion ($7.3 billion) development plan that includes seven new ships to be delivered for the Costa Group by 2023. SASEMAR, ASCM Recover Wreckage of Aircraft Crashed Off Spanish Coast

Baleària Ups LNG Bunkering in Valencia Port

Oliver Design will be showcasing some of its latest projects on its stand at the Navalia trade fair, which runs from May 22 to 24 , in Vigo, Spain.Recent projects from the Spanish firm, which specializes in naval design and architecture, include new state-of the-art vessels ranging from working vessels to luxury cruise ships. CMA CGM Fidelio: Fire on Board

The container ship CMA CGM Fidelio caught fire on 15 nautical miles off Puerto de San Miguel (Ibiza), Spain. The vessel was en route from Valencia to Malta, when flames erupted in the superstructure. The Spanish Navy and Maritime Rescue attended the container ship after declaring a fire in the crew cabins at 04:20 hours on March 24. Maritime Rescue spokesman Miguel Chicón said  that after receiving the alert, Salvamento Marítimo moved the ship 'Marta Mata' to the scene and required the presence of the ship 'Martín Posadillo' of the Navy, and the 'Sicilia' of Baleària, which were close to the place. The salvage vessel Marta Mata BS-33 sailed from the port of Ibiza and headed to the position of the container ship. The fire was limited in the area of ​​accommodation of the ship.

Rodman Polyships Delivers Catamaran Fast Ferry

Over the last several years, Rodman has designed, built and delivered different types of catamarans, not only for passenger transport but also for other purposes such as hydrographic, research or offshore windmill support catamarans. At the end of 2015, Rodman and Trasmapi signed a contract for the design and build of a new ferry to operate on the Ibiza-Formentera route, starting this summer. Cairn Energy Drops Ibiza Oil Drilling Plans

Oil explorer Cairn Energy  has dropped plans to drill near Spanish holiday island Ibiza, the company said, as it wants to focus on developing potentially huge reserves offshore Senegal. Cairn was set to carry out seismic testing on four offshore blocks in the Gulf of Valencia but has now decided its money will be better spent in Senegal where it said its oilfields could hold more than a billion barrels of oil. "Cairn has informed the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce that it intends to withdraw from four exploration permits in the Gulf of Valencia," a spokesman said. The company will maintain other projects in Spain, including applications for new licences offshore the Gulf of Lion and the Bay of Biscay, he added.

Adelte Wins Contracts for 8 Boarding Bridges

Adelte, a designer and manufacturer of sophisticated Seaport Passenger Boarding Bridges (SPBBs) for cruise and ferry terminals has recently won eight contracts for the supply in 2014 of a total of eleven tailor-made SPBBs to the ports of Rotterdam, Stornoway, Swinoujscie and Ullapool in Northern Europe, Denia and Savona in Southern Europe and Busan and Singapore in Asia. Adelte has been awarded a contract by the Rotterdam Port Authority to install this summer a new KRONUS SPBB, which will replace the current system.

New Mediterranean Yacht Charter Destinations

The Balearic Islands of Mallorca, Ibiza, Minorca and Formentera, along with mainland cities such as Barcelona, Valencia and Marbella, can now be added to Europe's established 'charter' destinations, announce IYR. With the longest summer season in Europe, and reliable sunshine from April through until late Autumn, these  destinations can now add as much as 75 days to the European cruising season - this now brings a season that incorporates Easter through until the "Club closing parties of Ibiza" and the late Autumn sunshine on the southern Iberian peninsula. The Balearics and Spain now join the top cruising destinations of the Cote d'Azur, Costa Smeralda and Amalfi Coast on the charterers' calendar.

Incat Delivers Milenium Tres

Incat recently delivered a new 321-ft. (98 m) wave piercing catamaran to one of Spain’s largest shipping companies, Acciona Trasmediterránea. Milenium Tres is the sixth Incat high speed catamaran to join an Acciona Trasmediterránea fleet which already includes the 314-ft. (96 m) Milenium and the 321-ft. Milenium Dos, both of which have been operating on the Spanish mainland-Balearic Islands links since 2000 and 2003 respectively, and also the 96 metre Alborán on the Gibraltar Strait’s busy Algeciras – Ceuta crossing. In addition, this summer saw Incat’s K-class catamaran Incat K3 in operation on the new route from Alicante to Palma and Ibiza.
