Global Entities Convene for Maritime Career Day

The Malta Maritime Careers Day will see the participation of three eminent international entities in its first year of staging. These will be ICOMIA - the International Council of Marine Industry Associations, SNAME - The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers - based in Virginia, U.S. and the IMO International Maritime Law Institute. The objective of the Malta Maritime Careers Day is to bring together professionals, educators and leading industry players to discuss and encourage the improvement in academic and practical training for the common benefit of interested students, the industry in general and Malta’s economic sustainability. Another primary aim of the event is to increase visibility among students and parents of the career opportunities in this industry.

2013 ICOMIA/IFBSO Congress News

The 2013 ICOMIA/IFBSO Congress was held in London, United Kingdom from June 11-14,  2013 and was hosted and organized by the British Marine Federation (BMF) at Devonport House, located in London’s exclusive Royal Greenwich, a World Heritage Site. The first two days of Congress consisted of various committee meetings including the first gathering of ICOMIA’s new committees: "Grow Boating," which examines current campaigns dedicated to growing recreational boating globally and the "Exporters Committee," which provides members a forum to share knowledge on export markets, discuss import regulations and exchange information on overseas boat/trade show experiences.

HYMAR Project Wins Technology Award

The EU Hybrid Marine (HyMar) Project—a collaborative research project led by the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) and funded under the EU's Seventh Framework Research Program—won the “Ocean Going and Coastal Division Technology Award” at the Royal Thames Yacht Club’s Mansura Trophy Awards Ceremony on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at the Royal Thames Yacht Club. The primary aim of the HyMar project was to provide reliable and practical information about the effectiveness of marine hybrid propulsion in small craft.

HyMar to Win Award at Mansura Trophy Ceremony

The EU Hybrid Marine (HyMar) Project - a collaborative research project led by the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) funded under the EU's Seventh Framework Research Program - will receive an award at the Royal Thames Yacht Club’s Mansura Trophy Awards Ceremony on March 21, 2013 at the Royal Thames Yacht Club. The primary aim of the HyMar project was to provide reliable and practical information about the effectiveness of marine hybrid propulsion in small craft. Extensive, practical testing of many different design concepts over the last three years has led to the development of a range of innovative technologies.

Björn Lagerkvist, 1941 - 2013

It is with deep sadness and regret we report that Mr Björn Lagerkvist, former President of the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) passed away on Friday 1 March 2013 after a long-suffering illness. Mr Lagerkvist was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Swedish marine industry association Sweboat in 1975 and attended his first ICOMIA Congress in Oslo that same year – consecutively attending Congress for the next 37-years. ICOMIA’s Latest Book Has China Statistics

The book provides reliable global statistics to the recreational marine industry. Representing the global marine industry since 1967, ICOMIA now has 35 marine industry association members (MIAs), estimated to represent more than 90% of the global boating business, making it well positioned to provide an international compilation of data covering the industry’s varied segments. The ICOMIA Statistics Book is the foremost annual tool the industry has to sum up international activity and, for the first time, this year’s edition includes invaluable market data from China.

Cape Town Venue for Recent ICOMIA Congress

After registration, delegates were taken on industry site visits to view rig designers, Southern Spars; large sailing-yacht builders, Southern Wind Shipyard, and the state-of-the-art facilities at Quantum Sails, which produce sails for multihulls and keelboats. Two more industry visits followed at catamaran builders Robertson and Caine and Two Oceans Marine. Congress commenced on Wednesday 18 April, and consisted of various committee meetings and the annual ICOMIA/IFBSO Joint Session was held on the Friday. Demand for ICOMIA's KEEL-CHECKER

The ICOMIA (International Council of Marine Industry Associations) Secretariat is pleased to report a significant industry interest in the recently-launched KEEL-CHECKER. So far, the Secretariat has received over 130 enquiries regarding the online software. KEEL-CHECKER was launched in March of this year. It is a tool for assessing whether keel designs are within the parameters of the new standard ISO 12215 Part 9, which has gone into Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) voting. Although the new standard has still a few months to go until publication, many organizations already require compliant keel designs. KEEL-CHECKER was developed by Dr. Robin Loscombe, a member of the ISO working group and a senior lecturer at Southampton Solent University.

ICOMIA Publishes Technical Guideline For Super Yacht Gloss Coatings

ICOMIA published today its Technical Guideline on Minimum Acceptable Finish and Appearance for Super Yacht Gloss Coatings following industry expert consultation. The guideline has been developed at the urging of industry experts who attended the recent International Superyacht Coatings Conferences. Its intention is to support yards and applicators within the superyacht sector in defining their own quality by establishing a baseline standard.
