Ship noise has been shown to be the main contributor to underwater noise on a global scale, with recognized negative impacts on marine life, said a press release from International Maritime Organization (IMO). Scientists and researchers from international organizations, States and expert groups have been sharing the latest information on ocean noise, including its detrimental impact on species such as whales and dolphins, at the informal annual meeting on oceans and the law of the sea, at United Nations headquarters, New York, United States (18-22 June). The theme for this year’s meeting is "Anthropogenic underwater noise". IMO’s Stefan Micallef and Fredrik Haag outlined IMO’s work to date on ship noise.

SEACOR Holdings Inc. has announced its results for its year and fourth quarter ended December 31, 2013. •    For the year ended December 31, 2013, net income attributable to SEACOR Holdings Inc. from continuing operations was $47.2 million, or $2.32 per diluted share, compared with $25.3 million, or $1.22 per diluted share, from continuing operations in the preceding year. •    For the quarter ended December 31, 2013, net income attributable to SEACOR Holdings Inc. from continuing operations was $8.4 million, or $0.41 per diluted share, compared with $30.3 million, or $1.36 per diluted share, from continuing operations in the preceding quarter ended September 30, 2013.

DNV GL U.K. has secured the third party ICP (Independent Competent Person) multimillion GBP contract, related to compliance with U.K. Offshore Regulations for the Statoil Mariner project. The award is the culmination of two years’ of project FEED support, assisting Statoil in developing Performance Standards and the Written Scheme of Examination (WSE) under the U.K. Offshore Safety Case Regulations for the Production Drilling Quarters (PDQ), Subsea, Umbilical’s, Risers and Flowlines (SURF) and the Floating Storage Unit (FSU).

DNV has completely rewritten the standard for Offshore Service Modules certification, commonly referred to as DNV 2.7-2, which was first published in 1995. On June 11, 2013, DNV will roll this out to an industry seminar taking place at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Center (AECC). This event will look at the issues surrounding the management and use of temporary equipment on offshore installations and how the new Standard for Certification may provide some clear guidance.

Concerns over corrosive wear risk in cross-head engines led Castrol Marine to question the rigour of some widely used scavenge drain oil analysis (SDA ) techniques. Factors influencing scavenge drain oil characteristics include fuel sulphur level, cylinder oil BN level, system oil contamination and operating profile. Accuracy is critical in SDA interpretation, not least because it supports feed-rate assumptions that are critical to cylinder oil performance, Castrol said. “It is not possible to analyze results accurately without comprehensive knowledge of the fuel oil, the new and used system oil, feed rates and operational data collected from the engine at the time of sampling,” said Paul Harrold, Castrol Marine Technology Manager.

GMC Limited will formally launch its Intelligently Connected Pipe (ICP) concept to the industry at ONS 2012 (Stavanger 28 – 31 August) at stand #M1176. “ICP is a major step forward in riser technology as it allows GMC to deliver fatigue resistant, lightweight, non-welded steel risers,” explains Toby Bailey, European Sales and Marketing Manager. “We are delighted to be able use the ONS event as a platform to showcase this ground breaking technology, which can remove all welding from riser and flowline construction.” Innovation runs deep.

Advanced acoustic processing and tracking capabilities provided by Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) will enhance underwater surveillance and help increase situational awareness for the U.S. Navy fleet. Lockheed Martin has been awarded a follow-on contract from the Navy's Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command to provide technology updates and new concepts to detect and track submarines. This contract extension is valued at $24m. The team will engineer enhancements to the Navy's common Integrated Undersea Sensor System hardware and software baseline, or Integrated Common Processor (ICP) system, which assists operators in localizing and tracking surface and subsurface maritime contacts.

More than 90 percent of the hard boom initially deployed as part of the federal-led response but now potentially posing more risk than it offers protection for vital shorelines in Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle has now been recovered. Because virtually no visible oil has been spotted on the surface of the Gulf in these areas recently, and in order to protect shorelines from any potential damage caused by boom in severe weather, the Incident Command Post at Mobile (ICP Mobile) announced that more than 1.5 million feet of hard boom has been recovered from those state waters. Responders remain ready to deploy boom should it be needed to protect the coast from any new threats from oil that may emerge in the coming days and weeks.
